Hi it’s RosewoodLibrary asking on anon because my main blog is a private blog.
Anyway loving your Trinity learning ASL and HOH Walsh headcannons/fics I’d love to see something where Walsh and Trinity work a case together where the patient is deaf. I’d love for it to be a paediatric case but it’s up to you.
Maybe the patient needs a procedure in the ED that requires a surgeons skill along with an emergency medicine doctor so Trinity and Walsh take care of them while also communicating with them in ASL
Anyway no pressure but if you’re interested I’d love to more from this au!
I love this!!!! Thank you for the prompt!!! I mentioned a case in these hcs, but here's a full mini fic...
Signs and Jewels

Simcom means speaking and sign at the same time!
I’m going to start tagging these posts as #pittasl so the au is compiled!
"Santos! Incoming pediatric case, 5 minutes out, young girl fell from some playground equipment, she vomited and passed out. They're suspecting head injury but are having trouble communicating with her, could be shock."
"Got it Dana! Prepping peds now!"
Trinity hops up from her desk, grabs a couple of nurses, and heads toward the pediatric trauma room.
After Trinity's residency was over, she stayed on for a new fellowship at PTMC, for pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Al-Hashimi had been the catalyst for the development of the program, as she found that PTMC did not have enough staff trained in dealing with children. Baran has a medically complex child and wanted the ER to be prepared to treat children, especially those with complex diseases or conditions. She had personally asked Trinity to consider the program after watching Trinity work with children and wrote her a letter of recommendation.
Trinity loves her job. Many of the people who come into the ER do because they've done something stupid, and Trinity can't help but make fun of them. Kids were different-they were exploring, learning, and Trinity could never fault them for that. They deserve to make mistakes, get back up, and try again. Trinity wasn't always given that chance.
5 minutes later, Trinity meets the gurney as it is wheeled into the ER. A young girl, maybe 10 or 11, is looking around at all of the adults running at her.
"Young girl, bradycardic at 60 bpm, blood pressure is 145/90 mmHg, teacher said she fell from the monkey bars and was fine, but started wandering around and collapsed about 15 minutes later."
As they rush into the trauma room, the adults surround the child.
Trinity looks down at the girl and gives her a reassuring smile.
"Hi, I'm Dr Santos, I'm the pediatric ER specialist here. You're at the hospital; we just got to check some things out since we heard you aren't feeling good. We are going to move you over to this big table, how does that sound?"
The girl just stares at Trinity. Trinity takes the opportunity to check her eyes with a flashlight. The girl shrieks and swings her arm weakly over her eyes.
"Whoa, okay. We definitely have some sort of neurological injury. I think she's a little out of it, Jesse, can you pick her up and move her over? Make sure you communicate with her about what you are doing. I am going to call for Baran for a 2nd opinion."
"I'm here" Baran calls as she walks in. "Do we have contact information for the parents?"
"We're attempting to get it from the school."
While Jesse moves the girl over, Baran looks over at Trinity.
"What are we thinking, Dr. Santos?"
"Possible concussion, sensitive to light and apparent confusion, however I'm worried about a possible ICH as her blood pressure is really high. I think we need to get someone down from surgery in case we need to do a decompression."
"I agree, you get a name from her, and I'll check for muscle weakness and ataxia. Jesse, can you start an IV?"
Trinity turns back to the girl.
"My friend Dr. Al is going to check to see if your muscles are working properly. What were you doing when you fell?"
The girl is staring at Trinity's mouth. She yanks her arms away from Baran, who was examining them. Baran looks at Trinity.
Trinity is stumped. The girl is old enough to be able to understand that she and Baran are doctors, but she's beginning to wonder if the confusion is more severe than she thought.
Walsh walks in at that moment.
"Alright, what are we working with?"
Trinity looks up.
"Head injury, heavily suspecting of ICH. Blood pressure is so high we may need to prep for a Burr hole. We've already called CT. If we get this IV in, we can sedate to scan and do the procedure before any major damage is done."
"Without parental permission?"
"We haven't gotten ahold of them yet. And we haven't gotten a name to see if she's in our system. I don't think we can wait."
While they were talking, Jesse was speaking kindly to the young girl as he prepped an IV line. As he gently took the girls hand to put the IV in, she begins to wave her hands around, knocking the needle out of his hand and trying to get away.
Trinity and Walsh run to either side of the girl.
"Hey hey hey, it's alright, we're not here to hurt you! Nurse Jesse here is going to start an IV, there's gonna be a needle but only for a second!"
The girl panickedly looks between the two of them. She waves her hands around weakly but drops them after a moment.
"Walsh, I don't think she speaks English."
"But that doesn't explain why she isn't speaking at all. And she won't let us get this IV in her hand. I don't want to have to restrain her to get this IV in, that's traumatizing."
Trinity reaches out her hand to the little girls to try to hold it. The little girl moves her hand away, in tears. Emery turns to help Jesse set up another IV, and Trinity sees the girl's eyes light up in recognition. She points to Walsh, and then puts her pointer finger to her ear, then down to her mouth.
The sign for "deaf?"
Trinity immediately starts to sim-com.
"Are you deaf? Do you sign?"
Walsh hears Trinity speak behind her and turns around to see the little girl weakly sign back,
"Yes. Head hurts. Bad."
Walsh jumps into action and signs,
"I'm Deaf too. We are here to help you. We need to put a very small needle in your hand to help you rest, then the headache will go away. Is that okay? Are you comfortable signing with one hand?"
The girl hesitates, and then signs "yes".
Emery sim coms,
"Ok Jesse, go ahead and prep the IV."
She turns back to the girl.
"My name is Dr. W-a-l-s-h. My sign name is,"
Emery makes the letter E sign in front of her mouth.
"And this is Dr. S-a-n-t-o-s"
Trinity gives her sign name, forming the letter T with her right hand and touching both her cheeks back-to-back. Trinity then signs,
"What's your name?"
"J-U-L-E-S O-D-O-N-A-L-D. I'm ten. I want to go back to school"
The girl signs the letter J next to her ear after she spells her name.
Emery calls to the nurse behind her and says,
"Check the EHR for a Jules O'Donald. Get in contact with her parents immediately."
Trinity leans down to Jules.
"You sign beautifully. It must have been so scary to come here without being able to talk to anyone. You are so brave."
Jesse inserts the IV, and the little girl signs "Thanks" with her other hand.
Walsh smiles at Jules.
"You are going to take a nap now, okay? But when you wake up your parents will be here."
"And you'll have goodies!" Trinity signs.
"What's your favorite juice?"
Jules grins and signs,
"Apple!"
"Do you like dogs, Jules?"
"Yes!"
"You going to wake up in the part of the hospital that has kids, okay? There will be a therapy dog, and juice, and so many games. We will make sure somewhere there knows sign language."
"Will you be there, Trinity?"
"I can be."
Jules smiles at the doctors and signs,
"Okay, I'm ready now."
. . .
And we know that Trinity stayed after her shift to be there for Jules when she woke up
upon further research of the military sign I was talking about in my last ask (exuse if that last ask was haywire it was far too late and I was too tired). There is such thing! They are called hand signs and the military in the Us have them! There are a couple of basic ones, and with my Walsh and Abbot are besties properganda they def use them between eachother when they work together, and maybe the ppl who Emery works closely with also are able to recognise a couple of them
Walsh 🤝 Abbot and being military propaganda (jk but also not really)
. . .
I can see Abbot and Walsh using them while working on a trauma!
Maybe the first time it happens, Walsh was called down to assist with an emergency procedure.
She's cutting into the patient and Abbot is guiding her via ultrasound. Unconsciously, he puts his hand up in the military sign for halt, palm faced towards Walsh at eye level.
"Oh, so we're using sign now, huh, Abbot?"
Abbot groans.
"Force of habit, Walsh, you know better than anyone."
Using signs, Abbot and Walsh are able to communicate faster than any other pair. When working together, they are always looking out of the corner of their eye to see what the other is signing.
Even the nurses who frequently work with them are able to pick up on the signs over time, and slowly night shift begins to incorporate sign into their everyday interactions with each other.
Hard of Hearing Emery Walsh based off of this series
The support for this series has been so kind…I’m excited to continue adding to it!
Gonna make a master list soon of my fics so Deaf Emery / ASL Trinity will be compiled!
Trinity using ASL to express her love for Baran without spoken words
based on my trinity learning ASL headcanons found here and here
. . .
Trinity has trouble expressing her love for Baran out loud. She has been burned one too many times by past partners. They would foster a connection, a relationship, explore each other's bodies and minds, and then...
Trinity would say I love you. They wouldn't say it back. Or worse, they would say it back--but their actions would speak otherwise.
Trinity is determined to not let this fling between her and Baran become a huge thing. She was horny, Baran was horny, they would end up in each other's bed at the end of rough shifts, so what? At least Baran's house was nicer to wake up in than Yolanda's apartment, and it was close enough to PTMC for Trinity to sneak out and walk to work while the attending was in the shower.
But slowly things started to feel less casual. Baran would start waking up earlier, and Trinity would open her eyes and smell a warm breakfast, no way to sneak out. There were soft touches on the shoulder while charting, little "you oks?" whispered after particularly hard traumas, coffee orders being remembered and hugs at the end of the day.
After the fourth, "date that wasn't explicitly called a date", Trinity knew what this was. She didn't mean for this to happen, but Baran took up a special place in her mind. And a special place in Trinity's heart.
Trinity had been learning ASL after the miscommunication during the day of Baran's first shift at PTMC. She had since learned that Walsh was HOH, and knew sign, and decided to ask her something.
"How do you say, love, in ASL?"
Emery looked up from her Ipad, and then put it down. She was always happy to help Trinity learn more signs, even took her to Deaf events sometimes, but this was the first time that Trinity had asked about a non-medical sign.
"Well, there are a lot of different ways to sign love. For example, in a sentence where you are talking about something you love, like a TV show, you would sign like this,"
Emery crosses her arms in an X on her chest, with her fists clenched.
"Or, more casually, if you want to say you love something, maybe like a food, you could sign,"
Emery puts the back of her fist to her mouth, and then moves it quickly away, like she's kissing it.
"Or, and you've probably seen this before and not realized it, you would sign I love you like this"
Palm facing Trinty, her thumb, pointer, and pinky are up, with her middle and ring finger on her palm.
"Does that make sense?"
Trinty starts and says,
"Yes, yes, it's great, thanks!"
She makes the sign for thanks and then walks away.
Emery calls out,
"Why did you ask?"
Trinity doesn't anwser.
. . .
That night, Trinity and Baran are lying in bed, skin to skin, spooning. Baran is curled under Trinity's chin and softly snoring. Trinity feels so nervous. Baran won't even know. Trinity brings up her hand, makes the sign for I love you, and rests it gently on Baran's back.

Just saw your post's about Trinity knowing ASL and Emery's HOH experience, I've very much leant into the whole Emery's Robby's younger sister and one of Jack's close friends, and With Jack's and Walsh's military experience (Jack's confirmed, Walsh alluded to)... what if like Wlash goes into the ER board out of her mind and starts a whole conversation about the difference in their military signs
I haven't heard the headcanons about Walsh being Robby's younger sister!
If you want to send another ask explaining what you mean by military signs, I'm not sure what you mean by the last sentence (I know nothing about the military but I can do some research if you want my opinion!). I do have some thoughts and hearingbrother!Robby and Deafsister!Emery.
hcs about walsh's experience as a HOH person
It makes me think about what their upbringing would have like. Their parents refusing to learn ASL since Emery has hearing aids and should be able to "hear fine". Robby helping Emery understand conversations that she missed. His empathy and patience are rooted in his childhood where he never made Emery feel bad for not being able to understand him, and always repeating his sentences as many times as she needed.
But, he never learned ASL. As adults, Emery told him about ASL and the Deaf community when she was with her CODA girlfriend, but he didn't give it much thought since trying to learn a new language was too much work.
He notices that Trinity and Princess have been spending time by the nurse's station. He recognizes the sign language but doesn't understand what they are saying. He thinks it's a waste of time, they aren't even deaf like Emery.
His opinion begins to change when a mother comes up to him and gushes about how two of his doctors calmed down and communicated with her profoundly Deaf daughter. He looks up a video about basic ASL that night.
young cass and baran for @softmcshimi ‘s age swap au! i gave baran a seizure alert dog🐶
Your Trinity ASL is everything to me. Idk if you’ve seen the hc that Dr. Walsh is hard of hearing or wears hearing aids, I think Trinity learning a few useful phrases and Emery catching it out of the corner of her eye would be 🥹
based on these hcs
I haven't seen the hc for Walsh before but I loveeee the idea of it! I could totally see Walsh getting excited about seeing more sign in the hospital!
I think I imagine Walsh as being HOH and wearing hearing aids at work. A lot of HOH kids are raised orally and in normal school, so Walsh didn't know about Deaf culture until she was an adult. Her parents were hearing and didn't know any sign.
As an adult, Walsh had a girlfriend in medical school who was a CODA (child of Deaf adults). Her girlfriend was an ASL interpreter who grew up close to Deaf culture and as ASL as a first language. She brings Walsh to Deaf events, to meet her parents, and Walsh is enamored by sign language. Her hearing aids work okay, but speech is still muddled and sometimes Walsh can't lipread fast enough to keep up with some conversations with her hearing friends. She is THRILLED to have a language she can learn and communicate in without working around her hearing.
They dated until Walsh left for residency, and she spent four years learning ASL, going to Deaf events, meeting Deaf friends, and she becomes very proud of the culture that has embraced her with open arms.
At PTMC, the lack of reliable ASL interpreter services frustrates Walsh. She helped Princess and some other nurses learn some basic sign. Sometimes when surgery is slow, the nurses will page her, and she will pop into a patient room to assist with a Deaf patient.
Dr. Walsh comes down with Garcia to do a consult on an appendicitis patient, and while Garcia is discussing with Dr. Robby, she notices Trinity standing by the nurse's station with Princess waving her hands around. Walsh thinks she sees Trinity wag her finger, put her pointer fingers together, and then put her palm out towards Princess...wait, is she signing?
"Where, Pain, You?" Trinity signs.
Princess watches, and then corrects,
"The signs are right, but remember that ASL grammar structure would put the subject, which is pain, at the beginning of the sentence. Also, make sure to twist your hands when you sign pain, like this,
"Pain, Where, You?" Princess signs flawlessly.
Walsh gets pulled away to assist taking the patient upstairs, but observing that interaction makes her day, no, her week.
One day, Emery gets paged by an ER nurse asking if she could come down and assist communication with a young Deaf girl, who had a laceration and was getting anxious. She walks in to see Trinity knelt by the patient bed, making conversation with the young girl while McKay is stitching the wound on her head.
"Favorite animal, dog, I think. Dog sign fun. Yours what?
The girl brightens up and signs,
"Elephant favorite, mine. Dolphin also. Know South American species dolphin pink exist?"
Dr. Walsh is pleased to see that Trinity is hanging onto every word.
. . .
Edit: English translation for the conversation between Trinity and the young girl,
Trinity: "I think my favorite animal is a dog, I like the sign for dog. What's your favorite animal?"
Young girl: "Elephants are my favorite, also dolphins. Did you know there's a species of dolphin in South America that are pink?"
masc trinity wearing isa’s crazy mommy’s little meatball shirt (baran thinks it’s tacky)
Baran coming home to see Trinity trying to learn some ASL
Thinking about how frustrating the situation was with the lack of interpretation services and the Deaf patient during season 2
It didn't cause any severe repercussions for patient's health, but I think the frustration of the miscommunication would sit with Trinity. She does care about her patients, she's proud of her work, and I think she would end up internalizing that failure in communication. Trinity doesn't want any patients to be worried about coming in because they don't communicate in English
ASL is not commonly taught in American schools, despite being an American language, however, a google search finds that there are resources all over the internet that Trinity can look at
Baran coming home from a shift on Trinity's day off to see her curled up on the living room, laptop open, practicing the ASL alphabet
Baran encouraging Trinity to join an in-person ASL class so she can learn with people and also expand her social circle outside the hospital
Trinity learning new signs and practicing with Princess in between patients
Trinity becoming the biggest advocate for patient who use different languages! She and Baran campaigning for better interpretation services at PTMC!

Barantos First Date, Part Three: Three months later (bonus!)
Picks up a few months after part 2, this is more of a rough outline for the full fic I am writing about this series.
Tags: suggestive at the beginning, and then fluff :)
Barantos Date, Part Two: Dinner (and a little more)
Link to part one
Link to part three
this was so hard (but fun!) to write! i am writing part one and two into my first ever fic so any tips or additional ideas/feedback is appreciated.
the pitt age swap alternate universe! 🩷
big, yuriful things are coming...
baran likes to mediate after work (trinity likes to watch)
wrote out some thoughts too
I don't think the mediation necessarily has to be spiritual, Baran may hold onto some spiritual practices from her heritage but mediation was recommended by her therapist.
Baran is a thinker. Her position requires her to be, she is always solving problems, correcting students, calming patients and family...and she mostly thrives on it. But it does take a toll. Baran finds that sometimes she continues thinking about the ER into her evenings. Some nights she lies awake for a few hours, unable to turn her mind off.
The nights that Trinity is over are easier. Being able to lie down and converse with another person. But Baran still likes to take her 15 minutes or so to quiet her mind. She usually mediates around mid-evening, with a few hours to go until bedtime so she doesn't doze off.
Her practice fascinates Trinity. But mostly, she loves when Baran lays her hair into Trinity's lap and she can watch her girlfriend's face relax in real time.

First Date Draft (Mcvadi)
Summary: The conversation leading up the first date
Tags: angst, comfort, victoria being anxious, cassie being sweet
. . .
"You know, we haven't been on a real date yet."
Victoria looks up from where she was concentrating on her computer towards the sound of Cassie's voice.
"What do you mean, I thought we've been going out for like a month."
"Yeah, but hanging out at each other's houses isn't really a date, though, I should be taking you out, treating you nice, all of the things that..."
Cassie trails off, putting down the bowl she was drying into the sink. Victoria looks back at her computer.
"Well, we both have full time jobs, and you have a kid, and I, uh, wasn't sure if you would even want to do that."
"Do what?"
"Go out somewhere in town. Considering, well, you're you and I'm....me."
"The age thing?"
"Well, yeah, but also, Cass, you don't want to be seen with me."
"Why not? Everyone at work knows we're together. They were placing bets on when we would finally break. I'm honestly surprised at the lack of shit we've gotten from them."
Cassie sees Victoria's lip tremble at that. She messed up. She crossed the kitchen quietly to where Victoria is sat at the table. She's still staring at her computer.
"Victoria, look at me"
Victoria looks over Cassie shoulder. Cassie doesn't push it.
"I know this is weird. But we said we would take this relationship and all of its awkwardness on together."
"It's not that."
Cassie tilts her head to the side. Victoria hesitates before going on.
"It's that...I've never been on a date before, Cass."
Victoria looks down at her lap in tears.
"I don't want to do anything weird, or wrong, or embarrass you, or..."
Cassie pulls Victoria into her lap.
"Victoria, sweetheart, it's okay. I think I understand now. I know it's scary. I'm nervous too. It's been so long. So fucking long."
Victoria sniffles into Cassie shoulder.
"I like you so much Cassie, what if we start going on dates and going farther and then you realize you don't like me and then..."
"Vic."
Victoria stills in Cassie's arms.
"Think about that for a second. What if we didn't do anything. What if we stayed comfortable in the house forever. What would be of us then? I like you Vic, and you like me. But our feelings are wasted if we hide forever."
Victoria looks back up to Cassie's eyes. Cassie smiles and says,
"Now I'm not saying let's roll up to the nearest lesbian bar and make out in front of all of Pittsburgh's young queers, but how am I supposed to get to know you if we don't experience art, food, life together. I'm nervous too, but you make me want to be brave. I haven't felt that in a long time. If you don't want to go out anytime soon, I understand. I'll wait for you. But I think you can be brave for me."
Victoria takes a beat and regulates her breathing. She can be brave. Now, all she needs to do is pick a really cool, grown-up place to--
"Cass, can we go mini golf?"
. . .
To be continued??? This sort of got away from me.
If you saw the og version of this that was on my main acc, no you didn’t ❤️
