Early 2017, we released a Kickstarter for visual novel “Women of Xal”. It was comfortably funded! In short, you play as the woman Xjena as she eyes the title of Matriarch: A position of power that would make her one of the most powerful people in the world. To earn the seat, she must prove herself worthy to the current Matriarch, Xuna. It’s a moral roller coaster filled with decisions that trickle down, emotions run high, relationships grow and burn, and plenty of ways to die! If this all sounds like something you’d like to try, we’re offering two entirely different demos –free to download and play– right on our Patreon page! It also comes with a few more details.

Yes! Two entirely different demos that convey two entirely different experiences, art, music, and timeline. The “Kickstarter/Lore” demo was made late 2016, released early 2017, and acted as a concept for what the final game could end up like if fully funded. It explores the lore and characters a little more, faster-paced but isn’t canon. For the Patreon release, we’ve moved to an entirely different engine and has allowed us to squeeze in way more features, as well as being far more functional. More endings, balanced music, and a plethora of quality of life updates.

The “Official/Canon” demo was started 2017 and released this April (2018) with new art, music, and even tone as it’s now playing the long game in terms of showing its lore, character motivations, and storyline. It’s far more representative of what to expect for the full game’s release.

Long story short: The Kickstarter paid for what we needed. Although yes, we could most certainly finish the game and have it out with or without the Patreon, the Patreon will determine whether or not the voice actors everyone loved in the Women of Xal Kickstarter/Lore demo make a reappearance in the final product. I’ve been teaching philosophy at the university and college level for a decade. I was trained in the ‘analytic’ school, the tradition of Frege and Russell, which prizes logical clarity, precision in argument, and respect of science. My survey courses are biased toward that tradition, but any history of philosophy course has to cover Marx, existentialism, post-modernism and feminist philosophy.

This has never been a problem. The students are interested and engaged, critical but incisive. They don’t dismiss ideas they don’t like, but grapple with the underlying problems. My short section on, say, Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex elicited roughly the same kind of discussion that Hume on causation would.

But in the past few months internet outrage merchants have made my job much harder. The very idea that someone could even propose the idea that there is a conceptual difference between sex and gender leads to angry denunciations entirely based on the irresponsible misrepresentations of these online anger-mongers. Some students in their exams write that these ideas are “entitled liberal bullshit,” actual quote, rather than simply describe an idea they disagree with in neutral terms. And it’s not like I’m out there defending every dumb thing ever posted on Tumblr! It’s Simone de fucking Beauvoir!

It’s not the disagreement. That I’m used to dealing with; it’s the bread and butter of philosophy. No, it’s the anger, hostility and complete fabrications.

They come in with the most bizarre idea of what ‘post-modernism’ is, and to even get to a real discussion of actual texts it takes half the time to just deprogram some of them. It’s a minority of students, but it’s affected my teaching style, because now I feel defensive about presenting ideas that I’ve taught without controversy for years.

ambulances and cops and flashing lights were a regular occurrence at my childhood home because of seriously ill family, and i was able to dissociate enough to not get shot or otherwise injured by the well-loved police of this godforsaken suburb, who’d told me–as if we were in a movie–“we can either do this the easy way or the hard way”. still, my belongings were seized and i was detained in a tiny, screamingly white room without my comfort objects, the ability to ground or regulate my sensory input, my clothing, my dignity, or even a way to tell a single person where i was and what was happening.

beforehand, i snuck into the ER bathroom to flush two bottles of prescription medication that could have gotten me criminally charged if found in my possession. she’d known i’d had them when she called the cops. they got down the drain the instant a nurse barged in without asking, because crazy people can’t be trusted to urinate in private.

i spent the night and next day confused, distressed, endangered, and utterly alone, detained against my will in a hospital unequipped to process psychiatric patients, in a town i’d never been to–because i’d been stupid enough to take a suburban, white, bleeding-heart liberal woman at her word and have a child-rape flashback in her driveway.

then i got a thousand-dollar bill.
