“Mm, I agree.” Mandy nodded, overhearing the Nick talking about the rubbish on the ground. “People don’t seem to care about the consequences anymore.” She sighed.

"People do not. They do not," he waved a hand a little too passionately before taking a much needed breath. You did not want to get Nick Fury started on the environment. "But I suppose we just have to take things one day at a time. One litter bug under the boot of environmental justice at a time. Well, at least there's still people like you in this town, Mandy."

Wanda waved a hand at the customers lining up in front of the counter, bored expression on her face. From the corner of her eye she could see her cat attacking a cupcake wrapper, several customers clearly unsure if they should intervene or not. “Order number 71 for ‘Asshole’, is there an ‘Asshole’ in the house?” She honestly couldn’t remember which one she’d labelled Asshole, but she was pretty sure they’d hear the order number and know who she was talking to. “Come on, Asshole, I know you’re here. There’s a fancy cupcake and a latte with your name on it, come and get it. Otherwise I’m giving it away.”

Wanda snapped her fingers at a few people at random. “Hey, do you want this guys food?”

If there was one thing to be said about Wanda Maximoff it was that she wasn't subtle, not by a long-shot. Of course Nick had more than an inkling as to why she'd taken up such a grudge with him but it was nothing she could really prove. Nothing he couldn't shrug off and he'd been fighting off wry smiles all his life. She was loyal though, to the bakery or to Rogers, either way that was certainly admirable. Anyway, he watched with raised eyebrows as she started to auction off his order before letting out a long-suffering sigh (and it was long). "Remind me again how you're still employed here?"

Basics;

Biography;

No matter the reality, Nick Fury remains a mystery. Well, for the most part anyways. Sure, he wound up in Deerfield (and he's like, just always been here, right?) and has a fairly regular and uneventful job but he just has this vibe, you know? Like maybe he's killed a man or has ten secret panic rooms at his place. He doesn't offer up a lot of personal information and honestly, that might not even be his real name but Nick keeps himself to himself. He doesn't cause trouble... Unless you count the fact that he secretly plans on opening up some rival bakery or coffee shop or something to Steve Rogers' beloved establishment.

That however is not his biggest secret. He might not have ten panic rooms but he did used to be a cop, and he was pretty legendary. Nick wound up going undercover, some big, dangerous op and he had to burn pretty much everything in his former life to do it. They got the guy in the end but Nick was never the same. He quit the force and relocated, ghosting everyone and everything he had formerly known. That case he worked is practically a ghost story itself, circulated and added to throughout multiple precincts but Nick doesn't give that any mind. Not anymore.

These days he's working hard for the mayor's office, taking care of Deerfield's Parks and Recreation department. If you need a permit, he's the guy you have to try and win over and Nick isn't easy to win over. In fact, he hasn't been seen to crack a smile in years (or so the rumours go). That is, unless he's around his elusive god-daughter Nat Romanoff, then the cards are off the table and it's all smiles all the time. Other than that, Nick lives a pretty boring life. He eats, he sleeps, he turns a blind eye to his boss' shady shenanigans and drinks some real bitter coffee.

Connections;

Natalia Romanoff - when Nat was adopted by one of Nick’s then best friends, he couldn’t help but love her. He instantly agreed to be godfather, to look out for her if anything happened and anything did. She might not call him dad but they both know that’s what he is.

Steve Rogers - will take any and every op to stop by his bakery and flirt comment on how dry those muffins look.

Mayor Loki - his boss which is a lowkey (lol) nightmare but any boss is, really. Saying that, he is committed and #loyal to the establishment while he’s employed there.

Bucky Barnes - former squad member from his cop days (don’t tell anyone), a pain in his ass and his ex son-in-law tbh.

Of all the things that Bucky had endured over the past one hundred years, he never thought it would be the damn weather that killed him, but he was entirely convinced this heat would be the end of him. His head was spinning and everything seemed ever so slightly foggy; like something wasn’t quite right, but he couldn’t place his finger on it. He hadn’t been paying attention when someone pushed him- he wasn’t even sure he had really felt it- but when he turned his heart nearly stopped. “Steve?”

"What?" Had she just said 'Nick'? If this was real she would have said something else. 'Fury' or 'Sir' and what about her status report? If going through the rift had just led back here again then their best shot at getting out just crashed and burned. So why was she looking at him like she thought she'd never see him again? Why wasn't he asking all the right questions? Why hadn't he just told her... Told her something, something real before she'd left. "This isn't--- How are you here?" Nick had already taken a step closer but Maria was fuzzy around the edges (or that might have just been his blurred vision acting up). This had to be a dream. A hallucination. "I thought I lost you."

Since waking up in… whatever this place was, Neena’s life had been in an ever-steady decline. Maybe life wasn’t the right word to use. Afterlife. Or some kind of dull limbo. First, she’d found herself seemingly trapped here – and, at the time, alone – left to figure out where the hell she was. That wasn’t really going so well. Then, aliens had shown up, as if this place wasn’t weird enough with half the universe wandering around in it. The creatures had mostly left her alone, save for a few of them, and Neena wasn’t dumb enough to actively seek them out.

Since then, things had been fairly quiet for her. She didn’t know how long it had been since she’d woken up here, or where here was, or how she’d managed to end up here. Though she hadn’t seen anyone she knew yet, so things could’ve been worse. Despite not liking not knowing what was going on, Neena knew things would work out. They always did. If the universe had decided to stick her here, there must be a reason, and she wasn’t in any particular hurry to figure it out. 

Though not knowing anything was starting to grate on her nerves.

Having managed to sleep a few hours during the period of time she had designated night – despite the ever present early morning orange glow this place insisted on having – Neena had been woken up in a sweat, the temperature seemingly having climbed rapidly in the time since she’d fallen asleep. Quickly throwing on some clothes, she barged her way out of the room, hoping the hallway would provide some alleviation. It didn’t. Rubbing sleep from her eyes, Neena turned towards the other inhabitant of the hallway, “Jesus, it’s hot isn’t it?”

"Hot as hell," Nick managed to quip back but that might have been the last coherent thing he said if this damn fever didn't let up. He turned to look at whoever had spoken but everything was blurry and he doubted he'd look any more the leader he was if he ended up giving into the nausea in front of someone. Determined he could fight off just about anything that was trying to kill him with sheer will power alone (hey, it'd worked every time before), Nick steeled himself and managed to stand up with the assistance of the wall taking most of his weight.

"You okay, though?" He sucked in another breath, holding back a plethora of cursing that would make his mother return from the great beyond just to smack him over the head. "Besides the heat, I mean. Just... I'm pretty sure this thing we're in is tryna kill me and I'd rather that at least one of us make it outta here without dying again from the world's worst fever. Not that we can die," he paused, letting out a dry laugh, "Or I guess we'll find out." Man, his people skills were taking a real knock since this sickness had hit and he had an inkling that it was just another torture tool this place had on hand for them. What was next? Floods? Locusts? That one One Direction song on constant repeat?

Holding back a cough (or at least trying), Nick pushed himself further up the wall, trying to regain his posture. "Nick Fury," he nodded, "Might as well get the pleasantries out the way in weather like this."

“Are you talking about Agent Hill? That sounds a lot like something she would say, especially after what just happened. I just hope she made it out to the other side, wherever that is. She has to, right? I can’t think of not happening that way.” He said, before pausing for a moment and turning his head to look up at him. “I’m Peter, by the way. I was told that I have to keep an eye on you, that you’d be lost without her.” he said, offering him a soft smile. 

The kid was...a lot. Saying that, he could tell instantly why Maria had taken an obvious shine to him and he rolled his eyes on instinct at her message, unable to fight off that damn smile. She would say that, wouldn't she? Then again, it wasn't like she didn't have a point. "Nick Fury but you already knew that. Kid, relax. If there's one thing I know about Agent Hill, it's that she always completes her mission. She's never let me down once in all the years I've known her. If anyone is going to make it to the other side, it's her." And he believed that, he really did. "Maria didn't say that though but you're close. Peggy Carter, founder of SHIELD, always knew what to say too."
