Happy Femslash February! <3 I have new stats about big F/F ships and F/F-heavy fandoms on AO3. For more data, explanations, and clarifications/corrections, please click through to AO3.
I was confused for a bit that catradora isn't on a couple of these, and then realized--like, a TON of catradora fic are also tagged for glimmer/bow (who are m/f) which would disqualify those fics from numerous of the lists if I'm understanding them correctly.
Yep yep, you're totally understanding right. (And if I hadn't been in such a rush when sharing this, I might have explained that, or shared the following... glad to come back and expand on it now!)
SPOP and Catradora show up very high on the lists when we look at some of the other graphs:
In previous versions of F/F stats, I had shared these two graphs in the main post. But people had reasonably pointed out that a lot of the ships on this list (e.g., Marlene/Dorcas) are often background ships for M/M or F/M ships -- and a lot of the fandoms that allegedly have the most F/F also frequently have background F/F.
Folks wanted to know which ships and fandoms had the most F/F if you only focused on the works where F/F is foreground -- but unfortunately, there's no way to do exactly that, because AO3 doesn't tell you which ship(s) or category(/ies) are the main ones, when there is a hierarchy. All I can see is which categories the author has tagged, not which are most important. As a result, it's like you said -- when I also pulled data on F/F and removed all works that also had tags for F/M and M/M, I removed a lot of Catradora works and other works that were genuinely about F/F.
There is, of course, no perfect set of data; there are just pros and cons of different data sets. But it's fantastic to see a bunch of newer F/F ships (at least compared to when I started these stats back in ~2013, lol) like Catradora that are genuinely huge without mostly appearing as background ships! <3 And Catradora is one of the ships where it's most reasonable to look at the overall F/F ships graph (without filtering out the F/M and M/M) because that fandom seems to have so much genuine multishipping that isn't putting the F/F in the background (maybe a bunch of that even has the F/M ship in the background; not sure). I'm guessing that's true for a lot of the bigger ensemble shows where one of the biggest ships in the fandom is F/F, but where not all the main characters are female (contrasted to the K-pop bands or a show like Yellowjackets, where almost all the ships are F/F, so filtering out other categories doesn't change as much).
Unexpected connections happen in two places: the Ships list and Feeldāa dating app for the curious. On Feeld, finding like-minded people is as fulfilling as finding yourself. In celebration of ships, here are this yearās iconic connections.

Welcome to Tumblrās Year in Review (2023ā²s version)
Hello, Tumblr, and welcome to your Year in Review. Inevitable as the passage of time, our Year in Review returns again this year, as we rank all the things youāve yelled about by how much youāve yelled about them on Tumblr in 2023.
Each year, the folks behind your weekly Fandometrics measure and categorize all the tags you used, every search, every post you made, and each and every like and reblogāto see which subjects you talked about the most. Like every year, weāre looking at volume here, not sentiment. So you might see list entries you Do Not Like that Tumblr has been vocal about Not Liking this year.
And what a year itās been! A lot of fun happened. We all lived through Goncharov, orcas trashing mega-yachts, Barbenheimer, and mole interest, while our Artists on Tumblr continued to brighten our days and our dashes with original and fanart, and the Writersā and SAG-AFTRA strikes were hotly debated. You showed up in full support of those folks who create the stuff you love again this year. Never change, Tumblr <3
Our lists group subjects by topic and are built from 365 days of data between October 21, 2022, and October 20, 2023. This means that Goncharovāthat film we have all absolutely seen and finally remembered we loveāis included in this yearās data. On the other hand, we donāt tend to include post types, so weāve had to make ourselves exclude #polls from these lists. That hurt a little bit because, in many ways, this year belonged to polls. Bug race. Horse race. Vanilla Extract. So much nonsense of the very best kind.Ā
Weāre bringing you a somewhat streamlined selection of lists this year. A boutique experience, if you will. A new Musical Acts list replaces the previously separate Music Groups, Kpop, and Solo Acts lists, while a consolidated Video Games list includes all your favorite console and mobile games in one handy dandy list. This is so you can really dive in deep and sit with only the most memorable moments, personalities, properties, and shared jokes of the year (and because we love a battle royale as much as the next guy, and kind of wanted to see who might come out on top). The results donāt disappoint.Ā
And so, with all that in mind and absolutely no further ado, letās dive deep into the annals of Tumblr dot com in the year 2023. This is your Year in Review.

TOP 10 TV SHOW FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS, SINGLE CATEGORY VERSION (2009-2022)
If you want to see the TV Show bar chart with the multi-category fandom tags included, please check this post.
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the TV Show Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, manually filtered for fandoms belonging in only one category and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
Locked fanworks arenāt included in the count because Wayback Machine canāt view those, only Ao3 users can.
Jossverse was in the top 10 from 2010-2017 (Top 2 in 2010 and 2011). In 2018, it was removed from the TV Show fandom list and works tagged with it show up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) instead so Iāve excluded it from the bar chart.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didnāt mess up anywhere! š
ETA: About Doctor Who: Doctor Who actually has 2 tags with ranked higher (Higher than Doctor Who (2005) even) on the list. Unfortunately, they were both multi-category tags: Doctor Who & Related Fandoms was also in the Other Media category thanks to the Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio), and the other tag Doctor Who was also in Books & Literature thanks to Doctor Who - Various Authors. You can see them rank in the top 10 TV Shows multi-category bar chart race linked above.
About Stargate:Ā The Stargate - All Media Types tag is actually interesting because unlike most All Media Types tags, itās only listed in the TV Show category. Thatās why it still turned up in this list. This might just be a lack of tagging its other categories (like Books & Literature) on AO3, however. Now that I checked its subtags, it actually had at least 2 Book & Literature only subtags: Stargate Atlantis: Legacy Series - Various Authors and Stargate SG-1 - Various Authors. So it probably should not have been in this bar chart race. Apologies for the oversight.š
VIDEO GAMES WITH THE MOST FANWORKS ON AO3 (2009-2022)
All fandoms in the Video Game Category:
Games that have Video Games as their only category on Ao3 (Note: If youāre viewing this post from the Tumblr app, itāll just show you the exact same video as the one above. Youāll have to open this post on desktop or a mobile browser, sorry.š) :
To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the VIdeo Games Category on December 21 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race. November 2022 is based on November 14, 2022 data.
The Walking Dead & Related Fandoms was actually in the top 10 in 2015-2018, but has been removed from the Video Game categoryĀ in 2022. It is now tagged only with the TV Show category, but does not appear in its list of fandoms. Works tagged with it show up in The Walking Dead (TV) tag.
In 2011, Dragon Age: Origins disappeared from the Video Games category and its page redirected to āDragon Ageā, which was not in the list of fandoms before that year. It was added back to the listĀ the next year, however.
Ivalice Alliance was actually in top 10 from 2010-2012, but was removed from the VIdeo Game category list in 2015 onwards. Its page now redirects to Final Fantasy XII.
In 2011, Dragon Age: Origins disappeared from the Video Games category and its page redirected to āDragon Ageā, which was not in the list of fandoms before that year. It was added back to the listĀ the next year, however.
Final Fantasy VII (Comp.) is short for Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didnāt mess up anywhere! š
TOP 10 MOVIES ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)
To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Movies Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.
In 2000-2006, FFN used Miscellaneous Movies as a catch-all tag for all books that didnāt have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Movies in 2007 before it was removed by 2008.
In 1999, fanfiction werenāt divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.
You canāt see it in the bar chart because there were lots of movements at the time, but in 2000, Austin Powers and The Professional were tied in 8th place with 4 fics. A Little Princess, Evil Dead/Army of Darkness, Monty Python, Rocky Horror and Shaolin Brothers and Sisters were tied in 9th place with 3 fics.
Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.
By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers arenāt available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.
This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Movies section are correct. I canāt seem to get the same numbers for some of these series when I go to the specific seriesā page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though⦠Iām not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And itās not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serieās total fics from what Iāve observed.)
Please refer to this post for more bar chart races.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didnāt mess up anywhere! š

For example, currently, the anime/manga section says Naruto has 439k fics, but going to the Naruto page and filters, ratings and language to All, it says thereās only 413k fics. Thereās also 37.3k crossover fics, but adding would be equal to 450k fics⦠If anyone can clue me in on how FFN calculates these numbers, Iād be very grateful.š
