I appreciate that Neve is so buttoned up and poised when you're out in the wild - her hair is tied back, she's veiled, she's wearing some kind of high necked jacket or robes, gloves, a cunty little hat

And then as soon as you get back to the lighthouse she's got her hair down, her tits out, and she's halfway through her second pot of coffee

We hope over and see several things immediately:

They have crossbows available for shooting people. This would have been fine if they were using safe boffer bolts (specifically with arrow heads large enough to not go into an eye socket). What they were using as bolts were 12" wooden dowels with a little bit of yoga mat wrapped around the end, maybe an inch across. That was red flag #1.

I go over to their weapon library. The first thing I see is that almost every weapon has exposed PVC pipe on at least one striking surface (#2). I don't come from a sports larp background, but I am a person who makes weapons for games with actual safety standards, so I try to come at it from a place of curiosity rather than criticism - tell me about your system, how the weapons are built, etc.

They tell me it is a full contact game (#3), which for anyone unfamiliar is exactly what it sounds like. And full contact is fine, if the weapons and armour are all safe to use, and not just lengths of exposed PVC pipe. I look over a couple of the more egregious examples - a """spear"" that is just straight up a pipe from Home Depot with a little triangle of camp mat foam from the dollar store taped on the end. That's it. A thrusting weapon that's just a fuckin PIPE.

I'm chatting with one of the game organizers, he's explaining how safe the weapons are (they aren't), I ask questions about how they mitigate injuries and the like, try to delicately ask where the nearest hospital to their site was (35 minutes by car). A second guy comes over to explain how safe the weapons are. My other pal, the one not into fighting, comes over to grab me out of this insane conversation because it's our fighting pal's turn to hit stuff.

Blessedly, they did not get paired with the Glaive Guy - another 7' piece of PVC pipe with a little camp foam on it to represent a blade. They grabbed a shield and a sword, and the guy they were up against had I think just a regular sword?

Either way, no one had to sign any kind of waiver (#4). We cheer on our friend, but also are bracing for impact because the "fight pit" was just a ring of rope with some driveway markers holding it up. The two of them are presented with the rules (location based, if you get hit in a location you can't use it anymore) and no safety information like "no head, hand, or groin shots" (#5). The guy running the pit says "okay fight" and the dude our buddy is up against is whipping his sword around so fast it's making Noise. This probably would have been fine if there was any padding on it, but goddamn, there sure was not.

Our buddy had the good sense to grab a shield as one of their weapons because, and I stand by this, this dude would have otherwise sent them to the hospital.

They took a nasty hit to the hand that turned into a black bruise nearly 3" across.

Anyway, if an injury taken at a promotional event for your game is treated with a 🤷 and a "that kind of thing is just part of the game" then I shudder to think about what the response would be during an actual event.

They caught us mostly on our way out but we left immediately after this encounter.
