â¨Flashy Crossoverâ¨
For context for ya all...
In the german dub of Demon Slayer, Loid and Tengen have the same voice actor.
Well and that's why I had this ideađđ
have people done this meme with yuri and loid yet?
(original meme by featherleafern on X I think)
rip to anyas future boyfriend aka damian

Last song: De Ginetai by Elli Kokkinou & Foivos, a Greek song though Iâm Romanian :)))) I found it by mistake after a compatriot was singing it from memory and blew the lines, so what was initially âDe Ginetai, De Ginetaiâ became, âDe vinete, De vineteâ which translates to âOf eggplants, of eggplantsâ đ đ
Favourite colour: coral especially, but I like all pastel shades of pink orange, powerful tones of red like burgundy and wine, as well as aqua and seafoam blue
Last TV Show: Cunk on Earth, believe it or not :)))
Last Movie: uhhh⌠Iâm gonna try to appear intellectual and say the 1984 movie adaptation
Last Book: Franz Kafkaâs Metamorphosis and Guy de Maupassantâs Yvette
If weâre talking comic books and manga as well that would also be Spy x Family, Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen
Favourite Flavour: Does garlic count as a flavour? 𤣠But honestly as long as it has either garlic, tomato sauce, sour cream or yoghurt Iâll be finishing that no questions asked. All kinds of cheese as well: blue cheese, parmegiano, gouda, cheddar, mozzarella, edam, schweizer, camembert, goatâs cheese, cowâs cheese, sheepâs cheese, aged or fresh, sweet or salty, tangy or smooth, creamy or blocky, smoked or grilled, ALL OF IT.
On the other hand I HATE the taste of raw bell peppers.
Tea or Coffee: I am a coffee addict. I know how my day will play out based on the foam I create for my latte art in the morning. People call me pretentious, I say I know how to make the most of lifeâs subtle pleasures.
Relation Status: Single
Last Thing Googled: heh, nice try FBI đ
Yeah, no, jk, the literal last thing was to make sure I understood the title of a german political film that I was recommended: Die Welle (The Wave). But out of my own interest, it would be some tutorials about lasso tool tricks for Clip Studio Paint.
Looking Forward To: Getting my first kitty!!! đ That and becoming financially stable again after job hunting for 9 months. Itâs rough out there peeps, take care of yourselves first to truly shine.
Current Obsession:
Honkai Star Railâs Amphoreus story arc has had me in one of the tightest grips Iâve been locked in for the past years or so. The writers really outdid themselves with it, almost enough to make up for the fact that the gameplay has been progressively getting worse đđ
Thatâs for now but Demon Slayerâs first movie of the finale is coming to the rest of the world soon and Spy x Family anime is coming back this autumn
I have no one to tag as Iâm friendless, other than @beannoss who has tagged me in the first place so Iâm gonna skip that part đ
Chapter 119, one more time
And on Twilight, one more time! So we know the man is an unreliable narrator, and that threading a needle for what's true or accurate from an unreliable narrator involves all sorts of hoops jumping and figuring out which lines to read between. With Twilight, one of his tells is that what he draws attention to, even when apparently disparaging, gives insight into his thinking, his motivations, his wants.
Chapter 119 gives us a new one: the things he no longer does. In early chapters, Twilight was constantly mentally recalibrating, constantly reminding himself the mission would end, he wasn't Anya's real father, she wasn't his real daughter, Yor wasn't his real wife, their marriage was fake, the family wasn't real, all of this was the Mission and the Mission Would End, and so on.
In 119? Not once.
He never references the end of Strix or the end of the Forgers or the end of his guardianship of Anya. He never initiates any thought about the end of his marriage agreement with Yor.
He mentally thinks that he'd hoped the marriage would last "at minimum" until Anya is an Imperial Scholar, but Yor references Anya's graduation: there's a difference there in years and Twilight doesn't think, "I don't think Strix will last that long" or "I don't think I'll still be around then." He doesn't mentally counter that Anya's graduation is a benchmark the Forgers might reach.
When Twilight says to Yor, "We can keep the arrangement as long as you like," he doesn't caveat that either. No mental note about "At least until my mission ends."
At most he thinks that he doesn't know what shape Strix will take in future, but even that isn't a reference to its end.
Another thing with this chapter is that his excuse is flimsy. All right, so his excuses are often flimsy!! But in my opinion, it's more blatant here. There's a clear flaw in his reasoning. Twilight thinks this:
Looking at that ~rationally: from what Twilight knows of Yor (so, not taking into account her profession) her 'benefits' to Strix specifically are twofold: Yor's unanticipated connection to Melinda precipitating Plan C, and that she fulfils the role required by Eden that children have both a mother and a father. Isn't that... it? 'Numerous?' What other benefits does Yor provide for Operation Strix specifically? Surely the 'numerous' 'benefits' are to himself (and Anya, and the family unit)...?
The third development this chapter is on the flipside of noticing what Twilight is no longer doing, and that's noticing what he is now doing. Twilight spends the entire chapter trying very seriously to figure out what's going on with Yor. And he does that initially without referencing Strix at all.
He takes her seriously about the cocktails, a request coming from nowhere, and even when it entails morning drinking (which under mission auspices would be considered Abnormal and to be avoided, one would think...)
He takes her seriously about the cocktails a second time, when the restaurant doesn't deliver.
He takes her seriously when she says her city hall colleagues are dangerous, that it was a close-call, and he takes steps to solve that problem three times (handhold, butterfly chase, city overlook).
To be honest, I think he also takes the date seriously in and of itself, since he mentions on two separate occasions that he researched the new waterfront district.
When he thinks Yor is asking to end their agreement, he takes that seriously too! His first instinct is to try and figure out a way to amend the arrangement to suit them both or to free her entirely from it, not to manipulate her into keeping it exactly the same or into staying. This is the first time he actually explicitly thinks about Strix, and I think that pivot to the mission is largely him going into crisis mode after the ground falls out from under him.
When he deduces Yor actually means the opposite, that she wants their agreement to go longer than originally intended, Twilight assures her there's no end in sight and gives her the answer he thinks she wants, based on their past similar conversations.
And because I'm gunna keep banging on about this until I'm jossed, the only caveat Twilight makes is that Yor probably isn't actually under threat from the SSS due to Yuri; no mention of the end of Strix curtailing an indefinite agreement and no indication that he finds this implication from her distressing in any way. In fact, I'd go so far as to say this panel demonstrates relief when contrasted with his reaction previously:
(also shoutout to this meta piece by @glittertattoosnotsogoodname about the reiterative shine in Twilight's eyes when he's moved by Yor; or this, from @briefhottubcoffee about Twilight's surprised expressions around Yor: I'd say his eyebrows are lifted somewhat here too)
I don't really think any of these things demonstrates a lack of emotional intelligence, to be honest. It actually shows a fair level of emotional dedication and, maybe more importantly, a great deal of respect for Yor herself. Twilight is unlikely to ever be someone who gives grandiose speeches of devotion. But I'd argue he frequently acts from care and compassion, even if under the auspices of being matter-of-fact, even with his talk about the mission.
And that's another thing about unreliable narrators. They talk a talk, but they don't necessarily walk the talk. They walk a walk. To that end, another of Twilight's tells is the actions he takes without naming them.
In my view, Twilight tried to care for Yor in the best way he knew how, within the frame they'd previously jointly established, when she was (from his perspective) in a completely inexplicable mood and all over the place. And yeah, really I'd also argue that within himself, he was demonstrating... something, in this chapter. I miiight even go so far as to call it growth and/or development, but I'll fully acknowledge that given the dearth of interiority we've had from Twilight since around chapter 86, it's difficult to say with certainty. Mostly I'm trying to point out a few things that I think are being overlooked in the post-chapter disc horse (and in advance of chapter 120, when who knows what will happen! (Back to the kids, is my bet))
âI really love how detailed you went through the chapter analysis! Twilightâs cues are always monumental in how the less obvious they are, the more hidden subtext they seem to contain.
Now, I still feel like the particular wording in his thoughts was deliberately ambiguous. âBenefitsâ could be net pluses, like obviously Yor being the best mom for Anya and a friend to Melinda, but not necessarily so. Her being the one and only mom throughout the duration of Operation Strix also spares Twilight of any complications like finding a third wife, explaining why he has a third wife, make the wife not suspect anything, make sure it doesnât impact Anya negatively and so on and so forth.
I think Twilight is specifically going with the flow and not naming anything outright past some vague pros/cons regarding Strix. He does not address any of his wants, although he plays into what Yor wants no questions asked. At the end of the day his sudden malleability instead of him trying to force Yor into keeping up the front is the most intriguing tell.
Also⌠isnât it suspicious that he is not thinking at all about why Yor might want the reassurance for the duration of their marriage all of the sudden? Past the SSS which she made clear from the beginning⌠Surely he must realise something prompted her to breach the subject, but he seems weirdly ignorant.

⌠not me just clocking Handlerâs cover's last name. Sylvia Sherwood. Like Sherwood Forest. Where Robin Hood and his band lived and hid in safe harbour before going out to generally cause trouble for the tyrannical rule of a corrupt and oppressive sheriff and king in service to the people. You know, kinda like how WISE is causing trouble for an increasingly oppressive government and the warmongers in its shadows, in service to Ostania's (and Westalis') citizens, with Handler as something of the hub for WISE...

SxF RA 2025: volume 1! (pt 3)
My last post on volume 1, just some additional general observations I had in the re-read! Just a head's up that where the other two posts had no spoilers for future manga chapters, this post does have a few vague and also one or two more specific references to chapters not yet animated.
I was super curious if Twilight's motif of ash floating around him would be there from the start and it absolutely is! The motif is of course especially utilised in Twilight's backstory, but I'm thrilled by the tragedy â¤ď¸â𩹠that it's been in play since the very beginning.
Once again I look up what Strix means and once again it leaves my brain immediately because I don't understand how it's connected to the mission (from wiki: "a bird of ill omen, the product of metamorphosis, that fed on human flesh and blood") Actually now having typed that and pasted in what it is, I'm like: ... okay so probably this is referencing war and the toll taken on all the Forgers and those they're working to protect in their respective country's pursuits thereof. And then the mission itself is to seek prevention of more. GOT THERE IN THE END maybe
I was intrigued that Twilight is directed to look out for "seditious" activity from Donovan, given WISE is a Westalian organisation... It makes me wonder if maybe WISE's goal/first choice is actually to try and bring in Ostanian authorities to deal with Donovan, assuming they can find the evidence they need for it (and something that Ostanian authorities would actually act on, seeing as they seem fairly inclined towards fascism themselves)
I've talked a fair bit about Twilight's first thoughts about a spouse and family (on the right) but now I'm hung up on the next reference (left) that eluded me when I did my first analysis. Liabilities, huh. Bounces off of Yor's strongly held belief that a happy home life and family to cherish make her better and strengthen her resolve...
Endo may change things of course, but I also snagged on the description of Anya's abilities as an "unintended consequence." To me that potentially implies telepathy wasn't the pursuit of experimentation, which also potentially means Donovan was not pursuing telepathy either, for himself or as a tool. (however, with chapter 111, I suppose it can't be ruled out entirely...)
Anya noting that if anyone found out about her powers, she would have to run away... I wonder... foreshadowing...? I very much hope not but... đŹ
I already talked about chapter 2 a fair bit, but this made me laugh. Random dude in the back is so right đ they're both odd balls đ
Loved that chapter 3 gave us a li'l taste test of what it would be like for the Forgers working together. Yor into immediate action; Twilight puzzling things through; Anya giving the missing piece. Moments of emotional sweetness. It's all there! We're only missing Bond!
To Hemlock's point in this most recent chapter, I wonder how accurate his read was... after all, this was only days after Yor had met Twilight and Anya... She definitely has grown and changed and is increasingly thriving as herself, but I find it hard to believe that Yor wouldn't have done this before... Maybe the difference is how much she's now looking at the world around her and engaging with it?
Of course they're all motivated by multiple things, but in line with thinking about Yor & normality & acceptance, I'm now also pondering this panel, and Twilight wanting more recognition than he gets...? (I wonder if this moment also informs how often he thanks Yor for things đ)
Sharon at the Eden Academy interviews! I don't think I noticed her before!
Henderson's face here made me laugh out loud gjdasklgjksa
I wouldn't be me without a TwiYor note, and I am once again fixating on... well several things here but most especially the circled thing in the left-most panel and Twilight's phrasing specifically... "isn't even" is doing a lot of work there already... the mutual affinity between them really was strong right off the bat, eh? We see it most with Yor but yeah, this is a pretty loud admission!
Also on the above, whether intentional or not, Spy x Family has also 100% always been to a degree about gender and queerness (if only insofar as: "not normal" -> non-normative -> queer) for every member of the family. It is one area also where I wish I better knew Japanese cultural norms and societal philosophical underpinnings. It's a story clearly informed by collectivism, but there are blatant underpinnings, frequently made explicit, about liberation from societal expectation and pressures and... ahhh I'd love reading a Japanese feminist's take on the series.
and finally this gag, from Chapter 1 "hundred faces" chapter 4 "thousand faces" I, alas, don't think it continued onto million, billion, endless faces but I sort of wish it would XD
<- part 2
So sorry for being late to the party, but I'll do my best to catch up to the SxF Read Along!!
Oh boy, here we go :))))Â
Volume 1 is read quite differently for me from the rest of the story. It introduces some strongly independent characters, shows some deeply-traumatising backgrounds, sets everything up as a potentially very dramatic story and then subverts all expectations into a heart-warming found family situation where trauma meets trauma and somehow fits one into the other like jigsaw pieces to create an authentic painting of familial bonds. It creates a stark contrast to all other familial units, right from the first volume up to the latest one.
The first chapter introduces Twilight and Anya, arguably the most impactful characters of the series. The first is a man scarred by recurrent loss, frontline war experience and an uncanny intellect and manipulation abilities. He parallels Anya perfectly, a 5-year old orphan, the victim of child experimentation, outcast from family to family and with the burden of always knowing everyone elseâs thoughts and the moral guilt and responsibility this entails.
Twilight acquires a different view of the world, one that he can nurture and protect to help grow into what he envisions, as opposed to the usual manipulation and violence he mets out to forcefully carve his vision onto the world. One is patient and one is unrelenting. This beautiful conflict between the two strategies plagues him constantly over the course of the first chapter. He is used to inflicting direct change, using his cunning to steer others into doing his bidding as he believes is right for them to do. On the other hand, he now has Anya that also needs guidance and he recognizes he is the only one actually willing to commit to the effort. Â
He is willing because the future generationâs happiness and, by extension, Anyaâs happiness is his ultimate goal. Some will say that he lacks character since he can change himself according to what is needed for him to be, but this is his expression of selflessness, because he discarded his own ego during the thankless process of helping others. Thus, he becomes Anyaâs father from the first day of knowing her.Â
He does not recognise this fact in himself, as he still doesnât know what a good father is supposed to look like, hence the âkids manualâ and him asking Anya whether sheâs sure about staying with him rather than going to a better orphanage.
Anya herself is never sure of his commitment to her past Operation Strix. She is still a child, with limited ability to understand complex thought processes as well as the emotional turmoil Twilight is going through, particularly since he is exceptional at detaching any feelings from what heâs thinking. This way, Anya sees Twilight pretty much unidimensionally and she takes everything he thinks at face value. This makes for hilarious moments where Twilight is blindsided by Anyaâs fluctuations, as he is ignorant of the fact she merely responds to his thoughts, chalking it up to him not being a good father.
She is, however, already attached to him. She is a traumatised child, she hasnât known parental affection before and she idolises Twilight, seeing him as an exponent to her dear cartoon character Bondman. Past that, she also sees him as the voice of reason. More than what he willingly shares with her, Anya takes his thoughts and interpretations on serious matters as law. Operation Strix becomes her sole objective as well. Itâs easy for her as she is an adventurous and curious child, quite literally starved for entertainment. That is not to say she does not have her rebellious side to her. She knows quite well he does not want her meddling with any of his gear or that she should study, but she is not mature enough to rein in her excitement and act responsibly. Which is fully understandable, she is a literal 5-year old. Â
I love this chapter so much, its pacing and premise is a great hook for any audience and it also stands to summarise the most important themes of the series. The most prevalent theme is by far comedy. I would go as far as to say that all of the other themes also touch upon the comedic aspect in their presentation. You have the spy-thriller and expected tension during undertaken objectives and their subsequent subversion due to unpredictable outcomes, you have slice-of-life moments in which the domesticity gets challenged due to the charactersâ background. This volume sets the trend of the comedic clash between appearance and substance that becomes expected for the rest of the series.
Past that, the first chapter also helps the reader focus on whose story this is. At the end of the day, this is the story of Anyaâs family, to which Twilight stands as a foundation. He is the centrepiece of the ordinary life Anya is creating for herself.
And because a family is not complete without a mother figure, Yor is introduced soon enough. Chapter 2 gives a great snapshot into Yorâs mental state and her opinion of herself. The way she views other people is paradoxical, as she seems to be quite adept at understanding peopleâs emotions and picks up cues, but she fails to deliver in acting out societal expectations in response. Later on, we understand that she grew up without parental tutelage of social etiquette, in a remote locality where she wouldnât have had chances to pick up that knowledge, even at least in passing. Thus, she always feels âabnormalâ, even though she technically has nothing that much different going for her than other women. She herself feels like she should be capable of having ânormalâ relationships, to not stick out so much from other people, but, despite her best efforts, thereâs always something from her peculiar upbringing setting her apart from others.
This particular panel is poignant of how alien she feels, as if peering from an eyehole, separate from everyone else and incapable of bridging the distance. However, knowing how Yor develops from here, I can safely say that sheâs the one character that changed the most, almost making everyone else seem static by comparison. She has gained a family of her own, a tether to that ânormalâ world she has only thought about but never considered achievable. This became a new foundation for her and the conviction that she is capable of change, of becoming a ânormalâ person.
It is also evident that the extent of Twilightâs and Yorâs union was initially limited by their lifeâs purpose.Â
However, their goals evolve even during the short week or so that they are together. They donât necessarily change, but in addition to killing and spying, they have also discovered an until-then hidden aspect of their worldview, which was human connection. Before any romantic connotation, I think of Twilight having someone that knows him even when he has not an image tailored and Yor having someone to guide her through the societal pressures and accepting herself as she is.
The first time I read chapter 4 I didnât really think much of the scene where Anya comforts the downed bull. I chalked it up to Endo-sensei giving Anya something cute to do in the scene. But now, thinking back on this, it definitely has much more depth and adds more onto Anya as a person. This is a roughly 5 year old thatâs been brought up in the emotionally-harshest conditions, both as a test subject and in the orphanage, passed around homes that found her to be unsettling, never having had her empathy nurtured in any way past incidental interaction with other troubled kids or with shitty foster parents or with even shittier mad scientists. Yet in spite of all that, or maybe exactly because sheâs been at an abysmal low before, she has her first impulse to comfort and mend relationships. To put it even more into perspective, all she has been trained to do before wouldâve been quite literally the opposite, as a mind-reader asset for Ostaniaâs undercover operations.Â
I think this is a neat way to foreshadow Anyaâs role over the series. She is obviously the glue between all unlikely factors. Take Twilight and Yor as an example, they manage to make their cover-up family work due to Anyaâs intervention, because at the end of the day, unprompted, they would have been strangers in a marriage due to both of their propriety. This is also what makes Anya such a great character. After all the adversity she had to face, she still persevered and remained kind-hearted and hopeful.
Which kind of circles back to what Spy x Family is at its core. A story about kindness prevailing in the end. Of efforts eventually bearing fruit. Of loneliness being only momentary and a way to better cherish othersâ company. Of finding oneâs family in a world that is teeming with sad farewells.
Now, thinking a bit of how peculiar the trioâs interactions are due to their background, gotta love how Endo foiled Anyaâs telepathy from Twilight right off the bat. âShe is weirdly intuitive, almost as if sheâs reading my mind. Ha! Thatâs obviously just a coincidence, not as if whenever I ask her something remotely complicated she literally parrots back what Iâve been thinking of. She just has some strokes of genius from time to time.âÂ
Gotta love Twilightâs obliviousness towards whatâs right in front of him. As a spy heâs probably been trained to think only in logical terms and keep track of whatâs likely to happen, as needless panic over coincidences could compromise whole missions. Which is why he will never, ever guess that Anya can always read his mind and Yor is literally the Terminator in a red sweater. It wouldnât make sense, thus it cannot be. This ridiculously makes him the best and worst spy at the same time.
And thatâs all I had to say for this volume, I didnât want to go too much into what you canât glean off initially as Iâd like to have something to talk about in later chapters as well haha. Thank you for reading if youâve actually reached the end! Now, Iâd just like to pay homage to this legendary panel of Loid flipping over a mosquito (I also hate mosquitos, particularly if theyâre called Swan, relatable af).
