This week’s Idea Channel is the second video in our two part series about Serial. The first used Serial to talk about the concept of objectivity as it relates to the law. This episode focuses on journalism.
The long and short of this is basically: No, journalism isn’t and probably can’t be objective. But that doesn’t stop people from trying and maybe its good that they do.
The unmade connection throughout the whole episode is GrahamcrackerGort, whose rallying cry for so long was (and still is? I’m not sure.) a call for ETHICS IN GAMES JOURNALISM. The charge was that journalists were reviewing games made by their partners (disproven), which they personally funded on Kickstarter (permitted within reason under most editorial guidelines), and so on.
What I am most curious to see play out in the comments is how GrahamcrackerGorters potentially weaponize Jay Rosen’s proclamation that “transparency is the new objectivity”. If they do at all–if they still exist, if they still even watch Idea Channel–my guess is that it will be pointed at situations where transparency already exists, they just don’t like what it reveals. Or where “transparency” would reveal something salacious, but ultimately unrelated to the journalism being done.
"...weaponize Jay Rosen's proclamation that 'transparency is the new objectivity.'" Now there's a good connection I haven't seen made before. There's a point at which trying to apply the same degree of transparency we'd all like to see from institutions to individuals, or harebrained efforts to expose the "truth" (Reddit during the Boston Bombing being the prime example) can turn into a series of privacy violations and harassment. Especially when those efforts are fueled and couched beside abhorent worldviews.
