The One True Handler
“What do you mean, I have to drive over there?”
Three hours and 45 minutes ago, Alec attempted to go to HQ via the tube only to find the tube was out of order. Never in all of Alec’s time at Kingsman has the tacky tube gone down. When the tailor at the main desk told Alec he had been completely unable to get ahold of Merlin or the rest at the Mansion, Alec felt his stomach drop.
No one needed to tell him that was an extremely bad sign.
Alec comforted the tailor, assuring him he would find out exactly what happened and establish contact with the Kingsman again. It was partly a lie. While he was going to try to establish contact again, his main concern was going to his one and only true handler and tell her the news.
Magda had other ideas.
“Did I stutter, Agent?” Magda asked back, sipping on her tea and leaning back in her seat. Her home was empty now, her one daughter now working at Scotland Yard without an inclination of what her mother actually did and her husband passing away some years back. Her house was always immaculate, but still maintained a life about the place with pictures of her loved ones. It makes Alec’s skin itch in a way, but the itch vanishes at her tone. He sits up in his seat, not answering. Magda continues on after a moment. “Your next course of action is to drive over to the Kingsman HQ and find out what happened to your precious organization. If they’ve been attacked, and if they have, you must search for any survivors.”
“And if they have? What then?” There’s a certain viciousness in his tongue now, a certain level of disrespect he knows Magda only tolerates from him. “Shoot the rest in the head and tie up all the loose ends?” Magda laughs in his face.
“No, no, God no, Alecsey. Don’t be so dramatic.”
“What, then?”
“You must Keep Calm and Carry On, all that bullshit. Like you’ve always done.” Magda’s amused smile fades a little, lowering her cup and saucer to her lap. “You told me once the Kingman will never be destroyed. Never fully. Do you still believe that?”
Alec breathes out slowly, tearing his eyes from their lock with Magda’s. “I used to believe many things.”
“Then believe it again.” Alec looks up again, and finds that softness only Magda truly possessed. A kindness there that reminds him of someone else who died months ago. How Alec used to believe Allen would never die. “Make yourself believe the Kingsman will never be destroyed. Even if they are on the brink of it, even if there’s no hope left, fight for it.” Alec almost interrupts here, and Magda raises a hand to stop him. He closes his mouth. “I never said die for it,” She continues, and a chill goes up Alec’s spine. How does she always read him so well? “If your very belief is not enough to keep it going, let it go. I have faith that you’ll escape alive.
“But if something has gone wrong like you fear, you’ll be there to be the most loyal of them all. You, Alecsey, will again be indispensable to them as you have been to me. If the worst has happened, this is your best opportunity to have the lot of them right in the palm of your hand.”
Magda raises her cup again, watching Alec carefully as he processes these orders and the logic. Once she grows tired of Alec’s internal war, she sighs. “I still believe no news is good news, though. I doubt anything has gone spectacularly wrong, but you still need to seem like you care. But now may be the best time to sift through information on the Kingsman.”
“Do you ever wonder if I’ll betray you to them? If I have been betraying you to them?” Alec suddenly asks, studying Magda. She laughs again softly.
“No. I have never once doubted you, Alecsey.” She declares in such utter confidence it twists in Alec’s gut. It’s not that she trusts him. It’s that she knows. Like she knows that once Alec finishes his tea, he’ll get up and go to his car and make the long, treacherous drive straight to HQ to fulfill Magda’s every command.
And he does.
