Back at WKYC, Michelle was working in the editing room on her latest story about a massive hurricane that had just come through the gulf coast. Her producer, Mike Dawson, approached her and said, "We just got a late breaking story. There's been a series of break-in's here lately. I guess guys have been robbing all sorts of assorted places. They seem to be specially trained. We need you in a pinch to report this."
Caught off guard, Michelle responded, "Wow, um, well that's not exactly my forte, but sure... I guess I can do that." Mike looked at Michelle with relief, "Anything you can do would be appreciated. We don't expect perfectionism. We know this isn't your specialty, but unfortunately we don't have anyone here to work on this story." Michelle knew the station had been competing with some of the bigger stations for ratings, and this would be a big step in her career if she could pull it off, so she asked for a camera man and was off to the site of the most recently robbed establishment.
Michelle and her one man crew pulled into the parking lot of Joe Blo's Double Barrel to find a slew of police officers surveying the scene. To her relief, Michelle appeared to be the only reporter on the scene. At first look, Michelle could tell that whoever robbed the place wasn't worried about discretion. Shattered glass was strewn everywhere. It was apparent that the thieves just busted through and took whatever they wanted. Not only was the door beat down, but all the windows were shattered, along with the glass cases inside, from what she could see. Puzzled, Michelle noticed that some sections of guns seemed to be left alone, although the entire store seemed like it was trashed.
As she was trying to figure out who was in charge of the investigation, Michelle noticed someone trying to get her attention. It was a tired looking guy in his forties with a ponytail, and he was holding what appeared to be a dvd case in his hands. He approached Michelle and handed the case to her. "Hi, my name is Marty. I own this place. This is the security footage from tonight. I already gave a copy to the cops, but I'd love for you to get this on the air. I figure, the more people that see it, the better chance we have of finding the bastards that did this." Michelle thanked the man and observed the video as he walked away.
In the video, there were five males, armed with bats and beating everything in site. They were wearing painter's coveralls and wearing strange gold masks. Upon closer observation, Michelle recognized the masks as the kind used in theatre for comedies. A couple of the assailants began grabbing the automatic and semi-automatic weapons and carried them out of the store. And then they abruptly left, leaving plenty of other weapons, not to mention a safe chock full of cash, behind them.
Michelle uploaded the feed to her producer at the station and let him know that she was ready to begin the live report. Turning to the camera, she took a deep breath and began what she hoped would give her career the boost she'd been looking for.
"Hi, this is Michelle Turner, live on the scene at Joe Blo's Double Barrel where just recently a robbery has taken place. As shown here in the the security footage, five men with blunt instruments entered the building, smashing everything in sight, but only taking the automatic and semi-automatic weapons. The strange thing here you'll find is that they left without taking any money. Now, they were all dressed in coveralls much like an industrial painter would wear and are wearing comedic theatre masks. Let's see if we can find an officer to get a little more information on this situation."
Flagging down the nearest seargant, she asked "Seargant, one minute of your time please. I'm Michelle Turner with WKYC, and I was wondering if there was any more information that wasn't on this store's security feed that you could give us, any leads you may be looking into?"
"It's pretty early in the investigation. We do have a list of suspects, but for obvious security reasons, we cannot give them out at this time," the officer responded, in typical police officer fashion.
"Of course of course," Michelle replied. Determined not to give up, she continued, "Now from what I understand, this is not the first place that has been robbed in the area. Can you tell us where else has been hit and where you think their next target could be?"
"We can only tell you what places should be on the lookout ma'am. Any places dealing with weapons, especially places specializing in automatic weapons. About ten stores have been robbed to this point, and that seems to be the one thing they all have in common. The perps all seem to be wearing the same outfits at every location and are proficient in some sort of clubbed weapon."
Seeing that she wasn't going to be able to get any more information out of the officer, Michelle let him get back to work and finished her report, reminding citizens to phone the local police department with any serious tips on where to find the perpetrators.
