Marvin and Whizzer's on-stage sexuality doesn't negate or conflict with the depth of their relationship, and I'm sick of people talking about it like it does. "It's crazy that this show goes from them being freaky on stage to one of them tragically dying," you say, and even if the story was that simple, what about that is crazy, exactly? Sex is something most adults do regularly and enjoy–even prioritize in their relationships–and it doesn't make us view their relationship any less deep or worthy of respect. Why is fiction any different?

For the story to work, we need to see Marvin and Whizzer's blatant passion for and attraction to each other to understand how their relationship dynamic functions. If you strip away all the sexuality from the lyrics and performance, they're just two people yelling at each other who, for some unknown reason, will not break up. They aren't all over each other on stage just because it's hot, their sexuality is a storytelling device used to show the audience how the passion in their relationship keeps driving them back to each other even as their personalities clash.

Sex can be crude and funny and complicated and any other number of things–sex is simply a part of the human experience, and it has been a part of fiction for as long as fiction has existed. We need to stop treating it as the one thing that should not be included in stories, or as something only included for personal gratification: it's just something which can be used to communicate meaning–like any other part of a story.
