"So I was thinking that if you wanted to you could design like a logo for me or something. I'd pay." he added the second part as he looked over to where Sutton was from the couch. The two taking a break from Sutton's newest piece he was working on that Ellis had been sitting for. "Also when is the food getting here? I swear I ordered it like 10 hours ago" It had in fact only been 30 minutes.
Sutton hummed in thought from behind his easel, dusting his hands of charcoal. He wasn't making Ellis sit for a grand painting today, just a study. In many regards, he liked these pieces the best; they weren't for sale or anything, but they allowed him to spend time with the people he cared about.
"Look at you..." He moved to grab a smaller sketch book to take notes. Of course, he'd design the logo for Ellis. "You're all official now. -- Did you put in the little box that they're delivering food to the Ellis Pendry? Weedtrepreneur. Cannabis connoisseur..." He pulled a pencil from his bun.
"...You thinking something minimal? Or something loud and graphic."
"Are you sure you want to come with me?" Ares asked again as he tucked in his shirt. "It's really just going to be a lot of people in a room not understanding what I do and thinking it's some kind of mortal world magic." Despite his time in Faerune there were still too many that hadn't quite grasped the type of science he taught. @moonlightxandxroses
Ramesh straightened his tie in the mirror. Cocktail hours and fund raisers and the like... These have been apart of Ramesh's life since he was a child.
"Of course I want to come with you." He turned to face Ares, crossing his arms leaned against the dresser, "Worse comes to worse we'll divide and conquer. I have no problem slipping hints in casual conversation that you are, quite literally, doing revolutionary astrological work." Ramesh was quite good at schmoozing over silly little hors d'oeuvres. If he knew how to do anything it was suturing and wound closure and getting rich people to donate. Ares would get his funding money.
A pause before adding: "At any rate, I like listening to you speak on your research."
βI donβt just turn things on and off like some sort of light switchβ Ellis shook his headΒ βI donβt pick and choose when I feel those types of things for people. I donβt feel them. At all. Ever. Itβs why I donβt understand when you both accuse me of acting a way that I literally canβt.β maybe with others the things he said or did would have meant they were flirting, but with him they never would be that.Β βThe better one? Of all the time weβve known each other do you really think I would think Sidney is the better one? We can barely be in the same room as each other most of the time.βΒ
As he had continued to pace he felt Sutton grab onto his short in order to stop his movement.Β βYouβre right, again youβre right.β he took in a shaky breath, and exhaled it out to try and steady himself,Β βyou arenβt seeing anyone right now, but what happens when you do? When you meet someone and start seeing them and you fall in love with them and then I am relegated to whatever extra time you find lying around because Iβm JUST a friend. You can love me whatever way that you want, but eventually you will love someone more than me, and I just want to -β he stopped again, wanting to just shove it all back inside and shut it down, but knowing that Sutton wouldnβt allow that.Β βI wanted to keep that from happening as long as I could, and thatβs selfish and fucked and I know it is, but Iβm selfish and fucked.βΒ
xxx
βI know you donβt. Iβm saying I wish I could do that for you but I canβt always. Itβs less about what youβre doing and more about how... It... makes us feel. I know it shouldnβt mean anything. And that was the first time I ever... worried about that shit.β He offered a tired half shrug,Β βItβs what everyone thinks, Ellis. Iβm used to it. Iβm βthe other one.ββΒ He knew Ellis was being truthful with him though. And that was reassuring.
They didnβt really talk about these things, it felt unnatural but necessary at the same time.Β He figured the best way forward was transparency.
Β βRomantic relationships are work and time and Iβm cool not doing that for the foreseeable future.βΒ He explained, β-- Sometimes I justΒ need to be touched, E. Thatβs all. Iβm so goddamn touch starved itβs kind of pathetic.β
He paused.
βAfter all the time weβve known each other do you really think youβre JUST a friend to me? Weβre spending all this time talking in hypotheticals about future shit that hasnβt even happened yet and may not happen. Maybe youβre stuck with me, Ellis, ever think of that?β

UghhhhHhhHhhhhh. Kori was nervous now which made Seven even more nervous. Whatβs more, Seven thought Koriβs smile was everything and the thought that they might not see it on her face for the remainder of their conversation wasnβt a great one. It made them sad. And reminded them of how they justβ¦ had a knack for fucking up good things didnβt they?
βGreat. Yes. Alright. Good. Sorry.β Seven rattled off at the same time as Kori. Ah, yes, this was a big mess wasnβt it?
They took a deep breath, walking next to Kori hands shoved in their pockets.
βListen, Chefie, I uh, Iβve been thinking about a lot of shit latelyβ they caught their fingers in tangled hair, βAnd I been goinβ back and forth about telling you this because, well, frankly, Iβm a coward, alright?β Thankfully, the park wasnβt crowded and it didnβt take long for Seven to spot a fairly secluded location, βAnd I want us to be good. Because I think youβre amazing. Andβ¦ Youβveβ¦ changed my life in a way.β clearing their throat,Β βCause, uh, youβre just so kind. And Iβ¦ Uhβ¦ Never really surrounded myself with a lot of kindness before. And youβre smart and so talented β I mean everything you make is insane, even your experimentsβ¦ Anyway,β They stopped to face her now, βI havenβt been completely honest with you. Kori.β While the safety of the trees put Seven at ease, it was then that they realized how this all might come across. And immediately they felt their face catch fire.
ββ¦..Fuck. Shit. No, no, no.β They took, like, three steps back. This felt like a big bad wolf scenario the more they thought about it, βIβm a fuckinβ idiot. Iβm so dumb. You must think. Thatβs not what this is.β They were pacing now, hands in their hair,Β βI couldnβt do this in public because thatβs not safe for either of us and I couldnβt have invited you to my apartment because then you might think Iβm trying to fuck you which I wouldnβt. β I mean, Iβ¦ that also isnβt what I mean youβre a gorgeous person inside and out β But now you must think Iβm going toβ¦ I donβt know!!β Their back hit the nearest tree, sliding down itβs trunk to sit on the ground. Their eyes pressed shut.
βIβm a bad person, Kori. I do bad things. And I havenβt cared about being honest with anyone until now and I canβt even manage that. I told you I was a coward.β
-
Kori really had no idea what was going on. It seemed like Seven had some kind of confession they wanted to get off of their chest which she had maybe sort of assumed but they seemed far more panicked than she expected. She stopped when they moved to face her wondering what could be so important. She looked up at them with furrowed brow, confusion written across their face. Was this what it seemed like?Β
No apparently not. In fact they seemed to want to make it quite clear that they werenβt going down that line of thinking. At all. Which was a relief? Maybe? She didnβt know how she felt because honestly she was just more and more confused about why they were there and what Seven had to tell her. She didnβt really have time to think on it much as it appeared Seven was panicking.Β βSevβ¦βΒ
She reached for them but theyβd already slid down the tree. Carefully Kori got down so they were on the same level, setting the basket aside.Β βSo Iβll admit I have no clue what is going on and you have been sending very confusing signals.β She smoothed the skirt of her dress out.Β βYouβre not a coward. A coward wouldnβt be here trying their best. I canβt promise iβll understand whatever it is, you seem to live a complex life. I can promise iβll try though.β
Counting. Counting they could do. Just start at one andβ¦
Sevβ¦
They clenched their teeth, hands gripping fistfuls of hair around their horns.
βIβm confused. I donβtβ¦ I came here with the intentionβ¦ I was gonna tell you I didnβt want to see you anymore but thatβs just another fuckinβ lie.β
If they were in a state of total panic they would have laughed at the idea of living a complex life. βShit shouldnβt be this complicated. It doesnβt need to be anymore butβ¦ Iβveβ¦β lived this way for so long.
Kori was next to them, and being so patient, and Seven was wasting her time, and Kori was going to hate them after this anyway, and Kori would be safer if they didnβt associate with each other anyway, and it was their fault for letting them get so close and their fault for not being distant enough and their fault forβ¦
They werenβt totally cognizant of what they were doing when a hand slipped from their hair to their neck, yanking at the chain hung there and snapping it away with one quick movement. If they couldnβt form proper sentences just showing Kori what was behind the curtain would have to do.
To be fairβ¦ it wasnβt too dramatic a transformation.
Their eyes were the same: one blue, one brown, both sleepy and notoriously hung over looking. Their horns (one with that annoying chip) and their messy hair tucked under their beanie was dark now but the same length, similarly half heartedly straighter in some areas, curlier in others due to years of heat damage. They were the same height. Their clothes fit how they had. Their skin was darker now, but still dotted with freckles β lazy smudged eyeliner and full brows. Hell, they were still scruffy in some areas around their chin, hardly ever bothered to shave anymore.
There was no fanfare, no glitz or light or other signs of magic. It just happened. And then was over.
Still their ears flattened backwards. When they spoke, their voice stayed the same.
βPeople never took me seriously like this. So I. Changed. So they would. And then we met and I just happened to be one way and Iβ¦ Iβve lived a long fuckinβ time, chef. Iβve never had toβ¦ I never wanted toβ¦β they closed their eyes for a moment in frustration as they gathered their thoughts, βI couldnβt keep lying to you. You donβt deserve that shit.β
βWhy are you getting upset with me over something I donβt know, Sutt? Iβm not built like you. Iβve never been built like you, or maybe youβve just never noticed? I mean, you must have, right?β In all their years as friends, Ellis had never so much as mentioned interest of any kind in anyone.Β
Sutton was right, they werenβt an item, not in that sort of a way at least.Β βI donβt care if you go out and do whoever and whatever you wantβ he retorted back, shaking his head, obviously that wasnβt the truth with how much heβd gotten upset the past time, but there was a difference in that previously that had never happened before. Maybe it was because it was family, or maybe it had been because it felt like it had happened so close to realizing how quickly it felt like Ryan would choose Mia over him if it came down to it.Β βYou keep telling me this, but one day youβre going to fall in love with someone and then I will be -β he paused, biting down on his lip.Β βFUCK!β he shouted in frustration as he took another step back and began pacing.
Β βFUCK!β the word came out again as his thoughts turned not back to Ryan, but to his mother. As much as heβd loved her, and knew sheβd loved him, he couldnβt help but think of all those times growing up that sheβd seemingly put her relationship with whatever new boyfriend over him. It hadnβt been her intentions, but it had been the first time heβd questioned his self worth, and perhaps even realized that some types of love were seen as superior to others.Β Β
xxx
βBecause......β
Sutton started but couldnβt finish. He didnβt really have a sound answer. He continued quietly, β......Of course I noticed...β He wrapped his arms around himself,Β βSometimes I wish I was built more like you but Iβm not. Sorry. I canβt... Just... turn everything off all the time. Iβm pretty damn good but Iβm not perfect.β He sighed,Β βI guess... it just hit different because it was Sidney. And you...β A pause to stare up at the ceiling, laughing cruelly at himself at his own realization,Β βFuck me, man. -- You always chose me. You were the only one that always chose me over Sidney and not the other way around. So I just... Got... Scared I guess. I donβt fucking know... Iβd get it. Heβs...β A weak wave of a hand,Β β-- The better one.β
Sutton crossed his arms, throwing an unamused glance at Ellis now, βYou donβt? -- Ellis, the last motherfucker that said he βββlovedβββ me gave me a concussion. Iβm not exactly out here looking for romance...β It might be nice but at this point Sutton wasnβt convinced the whole love thing was for him.Β
When Ellis screamed, it was Suttonβs turn to take a step back. He clenched his hands into balls, fingers pressing little marks into tattooed palms. He had to remind himself:Β This is Ellis. This is Ellis. Ellis would never hurt you. This is Ellis... Stepping forward he closed the space between them. Reaching out a hand, Sutton caught Ellisβ sleeve to keep him still.Β β...I... donβt know how to... fix... this... Ellis... Iβm not good at...β He glanced at where he had hold of Ellisβ sleeve, then let it slip from his grasp,Β β...You said something about how your love wasnβt the βright kindβ for Ryan. And here I am feeling like I can never love you the right way, man. So you donβt feel like Iβm going to drop you whenever I... Itβs not like Iβm even seeing anybody right now anyway. I havenβt even been on Finder in however long; Itβs collecting dust.β He exhaled slowly through his nose, running a hand over his jaw in exhaustion, βYou got me all fucked up, isnβt that enough?β
βIβm sorry. Iβm sorry I justβ¦β Grayson dried off his hands against his jeans and turned to face Monty properly. Words were still something he struggled with. For all the books he had read and time and energy he had put into trying to be better, being openly vulnerable was still a struggle. There was still a part of him he had to fight against not to feel like a failure just for being who he was.Β
βI got pretty lost in thought and I didnβt hear you come in.β He reached for Monty, pulling him back into his space. He didnβt want Monty to think he didnβt want him around. Monty had been his life line in Faerune.Β βThereβs been a lot going on recently and I guess it justβ¦ felt a little out of place. Normal traditions that I know about and justβ¦ realising how corrupt the versions I knew were.β He leaned against the counter, not really looking Monty in the eye.Β
βYou know Iβm forever grateful for you, right?β
xxx
Montyβs chest felt tight.
β...Iβm always here if you want to talk about some of it. Or we can... I can help you find someone whoβs not me if thatβs better.β
He couldnβt help the fear that was weighing down on him now.
βAnd I you. Without doubt.βΒ
Monty chewed at his lip for a moment.
β...Whatβs going on Grayson? Talk to me. Please?β
βFlirt with -Β β Ellis stared at him for a moment before blinking in confusion.Β βWhat is it with you and Mia accusing me of flirting with people? and Sidney barely touched me.β There was also the fact that Ellis hadnβt been sober during his brief conversation with the otherβs twin, but he didnβt bring that up because that point didnβt really matter.Β
Ellis clenched his jaw as Sutton continued to speak and threw out the fight that had been caused by him being upset over Sutton sleeping with his cousin, and he took a step back as he asked if he was the one he was supposed to fuck.Β βYeah well maybe lately Iβve been reminded that eventually Iβm not going to be enough for the people that I thought I was, so yeah, maybe I did feel some kind of fucking way. I donβt have a lot of people. I donβt care about a lot of people, Sutton, and one of those I already feel like I love him more than he loves me, because the way I love him isnβt the right way, and he has someone that does, so how long is it til I am nothing to yet another person, and I - β he didnβt want to feel that with Sutton too
xxx
βI donβt know Ellis, maybe because we have eyes? You donβt think of it that way but everybody else does.β he motioned between them, βIf we didnβt have history do you think Sidney would have even hesitated to get in your pants at the party? No. Because youβre hot, asshole. Whether you want to see that or not. This is a stupid ass argument for us to be having.β
When Ellis stepped back Sutton took it as an opening to play offense, gathering up the nerve to respond instead of just letting this be for the sake of being comfortable.Β βThis is what Iβm talking about: We are not an item, man. We should be able to go out and do whatever with whoever and not feel like weβre replacing the other. No one, Ellis, no one is ever going to replace you in my life. I keep telling you this. I donβt know how else to show you...β The word love caught him off guard. It forced Sutton to pause. Love and Ellis never really occupied the same space before. It almost felt like a door had opened.
β......Ryan. Just say itβs Ryan.β He deflated, brushing locs out of his face and breaking his gaze from his friend,Β β...I donβt tell you I love you, Ellis, because Iβm always worried being that forward will stress you out. And maybe that was a mistake? Is that what you need? Do you need to hear it more?β His brow furrowed, βWeβre literally having the same conversation we had the last time. And Iβm telling you right fucking now weβre not doing that silent treatment shit again. I canβt. I wonβt. So just... tell me what you need from me, E.β He lifted his arms out in a half shrug then let them fall back to his sides,Β βWhat do you need me to do so that you feel secure in this? Because if the answer is me not forming any new relationships outside of you thatβs not fair. Especially because you know the situation I came out of and how short of a leash I was kept on and how much that fucked me up.β
Kori smile brightly when she saw Seven, holding up her little picnic basket. When they asked what she had brought with them she looked down at the basket.Β βJust a few things. You said park so I thought picnic food.β She opened the top.Β βItβs nothing too fancy but youβre also the only one who eats my experiments without making too much of a fuss so I knew I had to take my chance while I could.β
When they started stumbling over their words Kori frowned a little wondering how Seven could be awkward or nervous around her. She was the awkward nervous one. When Seven suggested the walk because they wanted to talk to her about something Kori blinked. Were theyβ¦ No. Could they be? It wasnβt like that. Right? No definitely not. Or was it?Β βOh! Uhβ¦ Yeah. Sure. Of course. No problem. Absolutely. I just said yes in five different ways for no reason but weβre good.β

βWe donβtβ¦β Ellis was a bit confused by the question.Β βYou mean at the party? You know thatβs the most Iβve ever talked to Sid probably ever.β Even the times they had been around each other for longer periods of time when Ellis used to go over to the Rowe home when he was younger he and Sid had never engaged all that much in conversation.Β
xxx
Sutton caught a dead leaf between his forefinger and thumb, separating it from a nearby vine in frustration.
βI donβt know what I know anymore, Ellis.β Heβd keep what Mia had spilled to him in confidence to himself; his feelings stood without adding Ryan to the mix. βBecause I didnβt think yβall talked but when you do heβs allowed to touch you? I barely touch you. I barely, fuckinβ, touch anyone anymore. Iβve just... Been here. Feeling like I canβt go out and meet people while you flirt with my twin? Jesus fuck, dude.βΒ
Sutton wasnβt a pacer, when he was upset he stood unmoving -- maybe that was his way of hoping that if he was still enough whoever was causing his grief wouldnβt be able to see him anymore. At least, he had a reason to use his hands using the little monitor in his hand an an excuse not to have to look up while he spoke. β...Last time I fucked someone, you felt some kind of way. To the point where we fought. For the first time, ever? Which I absolutely fuckinβ hated. We have this-this strange codependency where neither of us can do shit without the other feeling like theyβre being slighted. So who am I supposed to fuck then, E? You? Give me a break, man.β He pricked a finger, the bottom of his lips twitching into a deeper frown at the sting (if it was the sting of the needle or of this conversation was to be determined). β-- Shit.β He pressed his finger to his tongue to stop the bleeding.Β β.........We didnβt used to have these issues.β It was high-key killing Suttonβs already very fragile vibes.
Heβd kind of spaced out as he stood there at the sink. Washing dishes had been a concept he wasnβt overly familiar with simply because it hadnβt been something he had to do back with the pack. Over the year and a half since getting stuck in Faerune he found it was a good time to justβ¦ think. There was something about the basic routine of it that was a little soothing so heβd taken to doing the dishes every day instead of using a dish washer.Β
Lately heβd been thinking about his relationship with Monty. Mostly what he was comfortable with in that relationship. He didnβt really have any healthy relationships to use as an example of how things should be other than Olive and Zeke so when they got engaged it may have freaked him out a little. He wasnβt ready for that yet. He barely stayed over at the main house our of fear of getting in the way.Β
Staring at the dishwater Grayson jumped when he felt a hand touch his waist and flinched a little as he turned to see Monty stood there.Β βFuck. How did you manage to sneak up on me?β @moonlightxandxrosesβ
Monty wanted Grayson to set the pace they took things. Did he miss him at the brownstone? Yes. Deeply. But that was a decision he wanted Grayson to make when the werewolf was ready. Until then, Monty was happy to visit Grayson at the lake house; he was glad to be able to provide him with a space of his own.
Seeing Grayson grow comfortable in Faerune made Monty happy. Grayson allowing him in was merely a bonus.
βHey, babyβ¦β he yawned as he entered the lake house, stomping his boots on the door mat to release the sticky leaves and mud from his boots. He juggled bags of groceries as he took his shoes off then scarf then jacket. βItβs cold out thereβ¦ Sorry Iβm late.β Shaking off the chill as he walked through the living room to the kitchen, Monty had been rambling on about his day completely anticipating Grayson to have heard him, βOlive had me out there running around looking for this specific wine. God forbid she go grocery shopping herselfββ Then Grayson winced, and Monty blinked in surprise, stepping back before he could even kiss the man hello on the jaw like he intended. ββ Sorry! Sorry, I thought you heard me..?β He sat the grocery bags down running gentle circles against Graysonβs lower back. His brows furrowed in concern, eyes too expressive for his own good. Big, and sweet and brimming with love for everyone especially the man standing in front of him; one could always tell when Monty was worried about something.
He let his hand fall from Graysonβs waist. Every since the masquerade party Monty had notice Grayson zoning out like this but he wanted to give Grayson space. He couldnβt wait anymore though.
Seven exhaled a cloud of smoke from their nose. Theyβd been tapping their palm against their thigh non-stop since they arrived. Theyβd gotten to the park early, nerves eating away at them.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,Β 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7...
They just had to do it. They were going to hurt Koriβs feelings and they were just going to have to deal with it. It was better this way. There was no way around it. They were an asshole and always would be and that was going to have to be ok...
β... Oh, no. Whatβve you gone and brought me now, you little trouble maker?β
Of course, Kori had to bring a picnic like the sweet, thoughtful little sweetheart she was.Β They cleared their throat, jabbing the butt of their cigarette into the ash tray of a nearby trash can.Β βIβm the most well fed I ever been because of you, you know that?β They scratched at the base of a horn, tangling their fingers in their hair. This was not how they wanted this to go. Already they were being too soft.
βI wanted to...β UgH. She was so small and her eyes were so big and anything Kori did ever was so sweet. She was like a walking cupcake. βUh.β What they meant to say was βI wanted to talk to you. I think we should cut things off.β What they ended up saying was: βI was hopinβ we could go on a little walk?β And then because they needed to be firmer god damn it added, making sure to keep their voice low and ~serious~ (as much as they could in front of her), βI wanted to talk to you about something.β
When Seven was 17, they were kicked out of their family home. To call the people Seven lived with 'family' was generous -- more than. Some were horrific. Some were well-meaning. And others were too walled up in grief to think much about anything other than their own suffering. Seven hated them the least.
Such was the life of a rag-tag group of orphans -- foster siblings at best, rivals for scraps of attention at worst. It wasn't like any of them believed their keepers held any form of affection for them. Their names were numeric; it was easier to take roll calls that way. Personality meant little when no one cared how talented a dancer you were or how good a memory one had, how one excelled at mathematics, etc., etc. You didn't feel loved when you were referred to by a number; You felt like an obligation.
It was interesting how little Seven was cared about until 'he' started requesting to be called 'she.' No one was supposed to know; it was something Seven had shared with another number in confidence. It was their own fault for trusting anyone in that house. Better now, they were on their own. 18 came and went.
"Seven."
"Like the number?"
"That's what I said."
He was nice enough. His name was Joseph. He got them off the street, fed them, and gave them a consistent place to live. It was only fair Seven helped out. At first, it was merely around the house, acting like a housewife to a dangerous man Seven knew little about. Then they became his shadow, forcing themself into a world he told them to keep out of. It was hard for him to say no to them (and Seven though they tried, was shit at doing much more than burning food and causing issues with the neighbors). Seven needed to be kept busy to stay out of trouble. SoΒ organizedΒ trouble would have to do.
Soon they were known as 'Joseph's little girlfriend' or 'Joe's girl' or 'that kid that's always around.' Joseph made sure Seven's name stayed private, unwilling to fully integrate them into his world. It was an effort to protect them that didn't matter in the long run. But Seven appreciated it all the same. The fact of the matter was Joseph had too much money, Β too much power, and too many enemies to ever live a long life. He was a brilliant businessman, but no one was invincible. A murder most foul was almost to be expected. Seven taking his place was... less so. Maybe it was because Seven still hadn't the confidence to stand alone, or perhaps they knew people didn't take them seriously. Most likely, Seven knew they were disposable. Like they always had been. And for their own survival, they had two options: run or figure something out and figure something out fast. They could mourn after they secured Joseph's cartel and empire (and when they didn't have a target on their back).Β
"I need you to enchant this. I need to be someone else. Can you do that?"
"It's not going to be cheap."
"Right." Seven had the witch's collar in a fist, hauling them over the counter so they were face to face. It was swift and far more forceful than they had intended. But they didn't have time to be patronized. They were going to be taken seriously. It was the first time they'd stood up for themself without Joseph there to intimidate for them, "I didn't ask how much it cost. Can you enchant the goddamn necklace or not?"
Money was no object. Joseph had money, and Seven was the only person who knew where he kept it. Walking around as someone else took some getting used to. It was freeing in a way. People treated them differently. They held themself more confidently because they had to.
"I killed you. You're dead."
Fingers, white and unusual but familiar, rolled tobacco casually. Unbothered.
"And yet here I am."
Over the years, Joseph melted gradually to Seph and then to Sev; Slowly but surely, their two lives melded. They lost track of what they were like and with who; it was aggravating to keep straight. After a while, they stopped playing a character altogether. Joseph never let anyone get close to him anyway. No one knew what he was like other than Seven. A fiercely private man, Joseph preferred it that way. He hardly spoke to people he did business with; If anyone noticed how much more brash their plug seemed, no one questioned it. Why would they? Sev was powerful. You didn't ask questions if you liked your face clean of bootprints.
At first, Seven took off the pendant the moment they passed the threshold of their home. They tried wearing their old dresses and skirts and doing their hair and makeup to feel 'normal.' But they never really managed. Soon, being Seven -- high femme and womanly -- felt more of a character than Sev. She and her had never really felt right, nor did he or him. They found they enjoyed existing masculinely, but they weren't a man; that much was certain. Just as it was when Seven was a child, the thought of being addressed as male was unfathomable. Wrong.
So they grew their hair out, and they painted their nails black. They stopped shaving and threw out their skirts. And memories of how Joseph used to be faded. And so, Sev as they are now was born.
They came into themself by being someone else. And in androgyny, they found respite...
Seven was never lonely; they were just alone. At least, that was what they told themself. They spent years keeping up an act, decades. Enough time had passed that Seven had thought they'd never need to worry about anyone finding them out. They kept to themself, and they didn't make friends. They were used to isolation (by someone else's doing or by their own). So, if they were so comfortable keeping people at a distance, how could two strangers manage to lower Seven's defenses?Β
Kirby was what Seven had always imagined having a younger sibling would be like. Seven had never had a familial relationship with anyone before. Sure, there had been Ryan, who Seven looked after and cared about at the time, but it wasn't like Ryan ever stuck around, nor did they connect very deeply. Their relationship began and ended at 'I was like you once; please eat' whereas Kirby equally amused Seven as they did worry them. There was a draw they felt to Kirby like they were kindred spirits.
"Look, fangs, I have to tell you somethin' important. I'm not fucking around..."
They paced around their apartment, going over what they would say -- how they could possibly explain -- again and again. Kirby would be easier to tell than Kori; Seven could be rough with them. The sweet, gentle chef however required... more care. Not because Seven didn't care about Kirby but because Seven knew Kirby would take this all in stride. Kori, Seven wasn't sure. And that scared them.
Fear of losing someone was a feeling they had promised themself they would never experience again. And here they were.
"This is me."
They pulled the pendant from their neck and watched themself transform in front of the mirror.
"...Well, how I was before was me too. I'm me. But. It's just not...my face..."
No.Β
They put the pendant back on, combing their fingers roughly through messy hair.
"Right, Kori, I think it's best if we don't talk anymore."
It would be better that way. At the end of the day, Seven was a criminal, and like Joseph years prior, they were worried about involving Kori in a less kind life than she deserved. Hadn't she already been through enough?
"I'm a shitty person; I do drugs, I sell drugs, I sleep around, I drink and smoke and curse... But you're good. So... Fuck me. No."
Seven ripped the necklace from their neck again. They got up in their own face in the mirror, narrowing their eyes and jabbing their pointer at the glass.
"You're a fucking coward. The fuck is she going to do? The fuck is anyone going to do? I've been running shit for this long. What are you afraid of?"
A pause.Β
"...What am I afraid of..."
Seven turned the pendant over in one hand and then pressed their forehead against their reflection. They looked down at the piece of jewelry in their palm.
This had been their crutch for the majority of their life they realized then.Β
They closed their eyes.
Maybe it was beginning to feel constricting.
Seven undid the chain's clasp and placed it back around their neck. The question now was whether they were strong enough in character. They already knew they were majorly flawed; leaning into being an asshole was comfortable. Seven had been satisfied with that until now. And Seven was not one to wade in discomfort; they didn't have the patience for it. Burning bridges was a skill of theirs. So they had to make a choice. One would be more comfortable, and the other would suggest they could redeem themself, which was a pleasant but fleeting thought. Ultimately, both were shitty options with shitty consequences. They'd figure it out. They had to. They weren't going to give themself any more time to weigh their options. So in true Seven fashion, they would make a split decision and force themself to stick with it.Β
