If it was up for her, Daenerys would not have left her chambers throughout the entire duration of the festivities. But her father had made it very clear that she had to make her presence known, that she had to engage with the guests. This wasn't just going to be a coronation, it was announced that her and her siblings would all walk out of this event with new betrothals. To say she was nervous and anxious was an understatement, Daenerys was terrified of who she would end up forced to marry. Sighing, she looked down at the empty cup in her hand, she had never been much of a wine drinker, but she made the effort to fit in today. Daenerys found herself in the courtyard, heading towards the city where the shopping stalls were placed all over the streets. She hoped to find something that pleased her to buy and hopefully distract herself from what is happening.
outside the palace walls, it was easier for wylla to blend in, to breathe deeply without the watchful eyes of stranger and her family alike. she still had a cup of wine in hands as she made her way through the shopping stalls, an earthy red that made the day just slightly more bearable. though having a direwolf accompanying her would make any type of discretion impossible, wylla still missed sterling's presence. she browsed the many trinkets with only a semblance of curiosity, trying to find something she could perhaps gift to her maids. a simple necklace had caught her attention when she looked to the side and saw no other than princess daenerys, easily recognizable by the silver hair wylla had never actually seen before coming to king's landing. "it seems we both had the same idea on how to spend the afternoon, your highness." she said, a playful smile.
The direwolf makes Daeron think of his sister Daella; she had her own baby dragon finally hatch for her had now was raising it, much like the princess of winterfell who had a direwolf pup find her, and now the loyal creature stood by her side. He missed that part of the bond when it came to the creatures in their lives. He gives Sterling one last scratch under his chin before his hand falls back to the side.
"Well, I don't actually know your sister well enough to say otherwise, but older siblings can be quite annoying that way." He says that because oftentimes he had felt the same way about his brother. "For whatever it may be worth coming from a Southerner," He doesn't miss the chance to poke fun at that. "You don't come across the way you think. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders."
the comment makes laughter bubble from wylla's lips, loud and unabashed. after so long away from yelena, she sometimes feels guilty in her (small, and mostly petty) frustrations with the older. it's good to know the frustration with siblings seems to be universal. "yes, older siblings, younger siblings, cousins... i'd wager us stuck in the middle are the only ones safe from it." she jests.
"i do have a marvelous head, thank you." it's easy for wylla to exude a confidence she doesn't quite posses. she does know her qualities, but most days they seem to pale in comparison to her flaws, or even worse, in comparison to her siblings. her twin is, after all, on the way of becoming a political mastermind. and wylla spends all her free time with a wolf. "you also seem to have a good head, your highness. for a southerner." she can't help but add the last part with a mischievous smile.
He doesn't laugh or snicker at the thought of the wolf being her friend, if anything, he understands that feeling well. Sometimes he liked the company of a dragon better than anyone else. "I can appreciate that, more than you know." Dragons, wolves, intelligent creatures that didn't respond back in words, yet you knew they understood everything which you shared with them, but never judged.
Daeron will take the compliment, there had always been a rivalry between the North and the South. But he couldn't deny the words about many of the Southern lords and ladies who seemed to grow too comfortable in their cushioned seats. Especially over the last two years, the threat of the thing that comes at night is gone, and they had allowed themselves to forget.
"That somehow means a lot coming from a direwolf." Daeron doesn't reach out to pet the large creature right away. Instead, a careful rise of his hand which he offers out to the brown wolf to smell. When indeed the wolf didn't seem too bothered by the smell of dragon, he allowed his fingers to brush along the creature's soft fur. "Do your siblings have wolves as well?"
her big hazel eyes meet the prince's, sensing the truth in his words. for the first time, wylla wonders if dragonriders feel the same way about their animals as she feels. "yes, maybe you can." sometimes, wylla thinks she wasn't made to be a human at all, but rather to run wild through the northern woods, feeling the wind on her hair and the blood on her teeth. if she could choose to fly, perhaps wylla would never willingly come down again.
"and a very intelligent direwolf, i assure you." she hadn't met many, but sterling was certainly the smartest of them all. he let himself be touched with an amused expression, looking at his owner expectantly. she screeched his ears.
"yelena, my sister, has starlight. he is even bigger than sterling, pure white like snow... it's different for her, though. she is the queen, she has her husband and her kids and the council..." and of course, yelena and starlight were not quite like wylla and sterling. even though they had never talked about it, the girl instinctively knew. "she is the well-adjusted one." at least in the younger's mind.
Daeron followed her gaze to the few who still remained in the garden. They still glanced up every now and then to see where the brown direwolf was, you might have thought it was the big bad wolf coming to eat them. She was a lot more forgiving of human nature than he was. He thought it ridiculous to fear something that one could plainly see with their own eyes and conclude, while yes dangerous in a circumstance, was clearly not some savage creature.
The brown wolf crosses to them at the sound of his name. Sterling. It suits the large wolf. Daeron can see the intelligence in the creature's form, much like dragons, there was more to them than meets the eye. He wonders how many would make the mistake to try and pet the creature seeing their owner do the same and believing it to be tamed. He knew better.
"He's very impressive." Daeron found himself quite fascinated by the large direwolf. "Sterling must find King's Landing hard. He's used to the wilds of the North, not the cramped spaces of the city."
"he is a good friend." her most dear friend, perhaps, something people liked to snicker and comment about when they thought the stark princess couldn't hear. nonetheless, wylla would choose the wolf over a dozen lords and ladies easily, even if he was just a harmless pup and not a powerful beast. his teeth were just an indicental advantage.
"the city is very... different." wylla says it with the intonation of someone who has nothing better to say. the streets and people and castle are grand, and warm, and rich, but much like her wolf wylla misses the untamed wilderness that clings even to castles in the north. "most people confuse a docile animal with a domesticated one. it's good to know someone out here has the wits no to do so." that is probably the closest thing to a compliment wylla stark would utter to a southerner prince.
"still, you can stroke him if you'd like. he doesn't seem to despise you." she mock-whispers in a secretive tone, sparring a glance at the wolf who is watching the two curiously.

The thought of a lost limb sends the onlookers into a frenzy to escape the area, as if, the direwolf truly was nipping at their heels. He just shakes his head at how easily they are fooled and wonders how many of them even survived two decades with the thought of 'the thing that comes at night'. It's amusing to think about the things that people allow their fears to run away with.
With the group dispersed it leaves him with one of the stark princesses and her direwolf. "Northerners are much more hearty," He offers in agreement. Most would not survive the cold winters. "Though I hope I can change your mind to realize not everyone in the South is so easily frightened, your highness." He says the last part as if teasingly correcting her while addressing the young woman all the same.
"What's his name?" He indicates with a nod towards the brown direwolf. "I've never seen a direwolf before. Only heard of their stories."
she nods her agreement, pride clear in her posture. as a teenager her cousins used to laugh at her northern honour, her unwillingness to let go of simple traditions and beliefs. for a long time, those has been the only link to her deceased parents, to the brother ans sister she barely remembered. now, it was a trait engraved in her personality, as simple as the whistle of birds. "most people are frightened of what they don't know." she shrugs, looking at the southern ladies now busying themselves far away from the wolf, looking like a part of the garden with their colorful silks. "it's purely human."
"that's sterling." the wolf raises his head in recognition at the sound of his name, and trots close to his owner. wylla smiles, threading her fingers through his soft fur as soon as he was close enough. "they are quite rare even in the north. but sterling was smart enough to find me when he was just a pup."
daeron can't say he's particularly looking forward to everything that is planned after the coronation; a city-wide festival with celebrations, tourneys, and feasts. he seems to be the only one who thinks it's a terrible idea to have all the great families of westeros under one roof. apparently, he's the only one who is thinking that way - if his presence is noted as absent, he doesn't really care as he finds his way out to the royal gardens. Though even there he's not entirely alone, there are others around, watching with nervous glances towards the large wolf...no, direwolf, as it rolled around like an overgrown puppy.
People were used to seeing large flying dragons overhead and the yet the direwolf is what scared them. The warning to the onlookers, from who he easily guesses is a Stark, because who else would have such a creature, earned an amused smile. Deciding to play along with her and her teasing of the onlookers. "I've heard, direwolves are quite well known to suddenly turn on those who stare too long. They take it as a challenge." He says with the utmost seriousness, hoping she'll get what he's up to.
her smile is fittingly lupine, a hint of understanding passing through her eyes and she scolds her expression on a more serious one. it is convincing enough, though solemnity had never been an emotion properly suited to the young stark. “oh yes, they are quite prideful creatures. one wrong movement and suddenly you are a hand lighter.” at the warning, a mother hurriedly takes her child in arms, and people start moving away with perturbed looks. wylla has to bite her lips to hide a giggle.
she shares an amused look to the man beside her, clever eyes examining his face. even as sheltered as she had been, wylla had heard stories about the one-eyed velaryon prince. "southerners are quite amusing... they are afraid of the silliest things." she said. if the wolf hadn't given away her northern heritage, then the thick accent clinging to the words certainly would. "you grace." she added, almost as an afterthought. yelena would be proud.
Though Olavyn didn't exactly fear the beast, he was cautious as to not upset it, ensuring he stayed planted against the pillar. "You've been told correctly," he confirmed, chuckling under his breath as his dark eyes watched the direwolf move from the grass to the side of his owner. "Sterling--strong name for a strong wolf." The compliment came easy. Olavyn knew how to appreciate power, even when it came in the form of a beast. With a soft smile twitching at the corners of his mouth, Olavyn took an easy step forward. "If I approach, will he maim me or let me greet his lady properly?" He mused, though he was slightly serious about the maiming part. He liked his face pretty, not scarred.
"i'd like to take credit for the naming, but it was one of my maids. i found him when he was just a pup, and had a propensity for stealing our sterling candlesticks. the habit faded, but the name stuck." even when he was a young and small thing, sterling had been able to scare others away easily, something wylla used to her full advantage. "well, you should be fine as long as proper introductions are made. he is a very well mannered wolf when he wants to." standing side by side, the girl and the beast almost seemed to share the same mischievous eyes, and something as close to a smile as a wolf can manage.
While the architecture around King's Landing was an eyesore, the gardens were a different story. Even Olavyn had found himself enjoying a stroll through them, though this time, he had found quite the bit of entertainment to enjoy during his leisure time. The small wolf that had been playing about was quite sweet to watch, like a child experiencing a new playground for the first time. Moving nearby whom he assumed to be the beast's owner, the Crown Prince of Sunspear chuckled softly as he let himself lean against a nearby pillar. "Then I should be wise to impress his lady, shouldn't I?" He mused, positioning himself to face the woman as his back rested against the pillar. "An energetic thing, hmm? How many years?"
wylla smiled contently at the man, standing a bit taller to observe him. sterling noticed her change in posture, but the direwolf did nothing more than roll on his back and observe his owner with a content expression. “impressing a lady is always wise, or so i’ve been told.” she gestured to sterling, who stood up and came next to his owner in less than a blink, sitting obediently. “that’s sterling, and he’s just about three years old. aren’t you, my sweet?” the wolf licked her hand gently, barely showing the huge teeth that could easily maul a man.
yelena had spent the past few days in king's landing attempting to convince herself that this coronation will not be the doom of westeros and reminding herself brannon trusted daemon velaryon, so she should find it in herself to trust him too, to little success. yelena was still adjusting to having her three younger siblings around her again, after so long apart they were like strangers at first. things were finally starting to feel normal, or at least a new sort of normal, between the stark's, she hoped coming to the crownlands didn't interrupt that.
the queen of the north rolled her eyes hearing her sister's comment to the group of onlookers watching sterling and starlight in awe. the two direwolves rolling in the gardens like they were little more than pups. excusing the small crowd, she stepped beside wylla, " just because we are so far from winterfell does not mean i can not arrange to have you sent to the dungeons, " she said, teasing. " i had hoped you would be trying to make friends, allies even, not using sterling to scare the lesser lords and ladies. "
“well, you never know what kind of interesting people are dwelling in the dungeons, i suppose.” she quipped, looking at her sister fondly. sometimes wylla wondered if she should have grieved more in the past few years, if her joy at coming back to winterfell should’ve been damped in the wake of her brother’s death and her sister’s hasty coronation. as it was, yelena was the reason why wylla had been able to go home at all, and everything else was just a hazy memory. wylla had always been good at ignoring hardships, after all, burying them in the woods inside her brain.
“are you insinuating i am not charming enough? in truth, i am simply making some time for my dearest friend in the entire world right now. sterling, that is. conversation with lords and ladies should come with more beer.”

wylla was loath to leave the north after so long away from it, even with the promise of great feasts and celebrations. she convinced herself to be perfectly miserable at king's landing, even knowing the vow wouldn't last too long if stories about the capital city where to be believed. sterling, on the other hand, had no such qualms about enjoying himself, rolling in the royal gardens like a pup and not a beast almost the size of a pony. it was certainly enough to attract some curious looks. "he does bite, you know. unprovoked." she said to one of the onlookers, voice tinged with mischief. "but only when i tell him to."
