“Ah—so that’s where the pumpkin went off to!”

Ragnor and Lennon both looked up at Genny with pursed lips, as if being caught stealing from the cookie jar. The two of them were sitting at the dining table, a few newspapers haphazardly spread about with a pile of pumpkin guts to one side. Both had hands on the pumpkin, with Ragnor holding a carver in his other hand. All three were also dressed up, Genny wearing a witch cloak that draped notably over her heavy pregnant belly, Ragnor in some colorful wizard robes, and Lennon wearing cat-themed footie pajamas.

Genny chuckled, placing her hands on her hips. “I did have plans for some of the pumpkins I picked up to just be pumpkins. I’d wagered four jack-o-lanterns was enough for us all.”

Her husband blinked. “My dear…I must apologize. It is simply that Lennon had wanted to do another one, and you know I can simply not resist her when—”

“Nuh-Uh! Nuh-Uh!” Their daughter was quick to interrupt, pointing a finger at him. “You said you wanted to make another lantern! And you said you wanted me to help!”

“She’s fibbing, Gen,” Ragnor tried to deflect, a clear playfulness in his tone despite the evenness in his voice. “She’s trying to throw dear old dad under the bus.”

“It was yooooooou!!” Lennon nearly shouted, and began punching at his shoulder, prompting laughter from both of her parents.

“At the very least, can I see the creation you two made?”

Once more, the father and daughter paused, giving each other a look. Slowly, Ragnor turned the pumpkin around, revealing that a classic jack-o-lantern face had been carved into it…upside down.

Genny, resting her hands on her bump, looked down at it, then looked up at her family with the same look. “...it’s an artistic statement,” Lennon was the first to speak, trying her best to sound confident.

Ragnor simply pointed a finger at her, and nodded in agreement.

“Trick or treat, meow!!”

“A-ha! Well, just look at that!” The man at the door chuckled, as he looked between Lennon, Genny, and Ragnor. “We have a witch, her wizard, and their darling little cat familiar, I take it?”

“And one in the cauldron,” Genny added with a chuckle, patting her midsection.

“But of course,” he nodded, grabbing two pieces of candy and dropping them in Lennon’s bag. “One for you, and one for your sibling. Remember to share!”

“Thanks, mister!” The little girl beamed, throwing in a thanks before the trio took off. The night had a chill to it, but it was fairly bearable, as night truly began to descend upon the town.

“Cauldron, eh?” Ragnor raised an eyebrow, reaching out a hand for his wife’s belly. “Planned from the start, or you just came up with that?”

“A witch’s secret,” Genny responded with a wink, making a shushing motion with her finger.

For the most part, the streets weren’t too cluttered, but there were still a good number of both families and groups of older kids going about, giving a festive air to the neighborhood. As they started to turn a corner though, they ran into a few familiar faces.

“Hey! Stick ‘em up!” Summer shouted out, sticking what was clearly a toy gun at Lennon. Whinter backed her up with his own toy pistol, but didn’t appear to vocalize himself. “Give up all your candy, cat!”

“No, I won’t!” Lennon giggled, sticking her tongue out at the twins. “Cause some of this candy is for my baby sibling, and they’re not here yet!”

“...darn,” Whinter mumbled, as they both lowered their guns.

Ragnor couldn’t help but laugh. “Good to see that lil encounter worked itself out nicely.”

“They’re good kids, even if they’re playing desperados,” Lucas remarked with a chuckle of his own. “Nice to see you three set up your costumes pretty well.”

“Could say the same about you guys,” Genny pointed out, indicating Lucas’s old west doctor attire and Rose in a saloon girl dress. “Surpire that dress still fits you, dear.”

“Just barely,” the vampire remarked with an awkward chuckle, pulling up at and adjusting the dress around her chest. Her own pregnant middle seemed to just barely be held within the material of the costume. “If I was carrying twins again, I would be liable for accidental public indecency, more than likely.”

“Bit of a last minute decision,” Lucas explained. “Kids wanted to be cowboys, there was a whole hassle getting the costumes to come in on time, and when they finally did we barely had ours worked out, what with Rose being due next month. These are, admittedly, older costumes. You remember Lazlo’s costume party a few years back, right?”

The two thought for a moment, but it was Genny who ultimately beamed in recollection. “Ah, yes! My, we were all a lot younger back then,” she noted fondly. “Word of the wise, I’d suggest planning around whatever costume is most convenient for the belly. Example.” She gestured at her own gown, which draped comfortably over her bump.

Rose let out a more genuine laugh. “Noted. Should we make the choice to have a fourth kid, that is. And I start showing like this around October, again.”

“Ah, well, life has its ways,” Ragnor pointed out, with a soft smile. “Genny and I were still unsure if we wanted a second, and then we ended up there by chance, and we decided, why not? Right, Gen?”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” she nodded, and kissed his cheek. “Any plans tonight for you guys?”

“Finish this block and head back. Then bed,” Rose gave way with a half chuckle. “I am feeling rather faded already, but I want Summer and Whinter to have a good Halloween, and it was a hell of a time getting in this dress, might as well make the most of it, hm?”

“But I think I can speak for all of us in that we’re past the time for Halloween parties,” Lucas added. “Halloween is for the kids, now, and the kids trick-or-treat. It’s nice, though, ya know?” Rose nodded in agreement, a content smile on her face.

“Absolutely,” Genny agreed as well. “Same plan for us, too. Try and get an early night.”

“But we are staying up for the yearly watch of Hocus Pocus, hun,” Ragnor voiced in a playfully stern tone. “It’s tradition, dear, and that includes seeing it with Len.”

She rolled her eyes in an exaggerated manner. “Very well. If we must,” she replied with an equally dramatic sigh, prompting all four to laugh. 

They continued to talk for another minute, before the wild west family and the witchy family parted ways, both heading off to continue their routes for the evening.

“You know…I think I’m starting to get what you see in this film now.”

Ragnor glanced at her, giving a toothy grin. “Finally, eh? Knew you’d get it.”

She nodded, and then looked down with a smile. “Though I think she’s yet too.”

Having returned home from a very successful Halloween night, the trio took to the couch with Lennon’s pillowcase full of candy. As they sorted through it, Ragnor turned on Hocus Pocus, which they all appeared to be engaged in as they nibbled on candy, both Genny and Ragnor getting whatever their daughter didn’t like. Now, though, Lennon was out like a light, a bit of chocolate on her face and still grasping an empty box of Dots in her hand.

“Aw. Guess someone had a bit too much candy,” he chuckled fondly, patting her head as he paused the film. “Well, she made it a lil past the one hour mark, which is enough for a good Halloween, I’d say.”

“Yeh? Got enough of Sarah Jessica Parker witch, honey?” She teased with a smirk.

Ragnor gave her a side eye, and huffed. “You should know I prefer Kathy Najimy as Mary, my love. Her vacuum cleaner endeared me as a young buck.”

“Oh, of course. I’m more for Bette Midler’s witch myself,” she noted with a playful air, and the two shared a laugh.

“Mmm…,” Lennon murmured, shifting about. 

Ragnor reached down and gently relieved her of her emptied candy. “C’mon, sweetheart. Let’s get ya cleaned up for bed.” As he started to pick her up, Genny took a moment to lean in and kiss her forehead. 

“Happy Halloween, dear,” she whispered, and Lennon gave a small smile her way before Ragnor carried her off. Several minutes later, he returned to her side, cuddling up next to her.

“Good night?” He asked her, placing a hand on her bump.

“Best you can be when nearly due,” she responded dryly, but sighed peacefully. “Lennon enjoyed herself, clearly, and that’s what matters. Glad I could stay out the whole night without having to bail.”

“You could have, if you needed to.”

“I know, but I was honestly pretty good,” she admitted. “Tired now, but I had a surprising amount of energy tonight. Maybe it was that pumpkin you two carved.”

“Our art can be inspiring,” Ragnor playfully boasted. “Also nice to have a holiday that isn’t interrupted by a certain arrival.”

All of a sudden, Genny’s expression changed, pursing her lips as she looked down at her bump. “About that…”

“...Genny…”

She laughed. “Nah, I’m kidding. Could you imagine, though? Another holiday kid?”

Ragnor held his head in his hand. “Lennon being born on St. Patrick’s Day is one thing, but baby number two on a day like Halloween? That’s too much!”

“Halloween birthday party would be cute though, wouldn’t it?”

The tiefling man simply slumped back, shaking his head. “Too much. Too much.”

She smiled, and kissed his cheek, only for Ragnor to gently take hold of her chin and pull her in for a full on kiss on the lips. When they came apart, they smiled at each other. “Happy Halloween, my love,” he whispered.
