Review of Bloodmoon, by Bethesda
So again, the point of this review is more so that I can experience other modded content and have a sort of mental baseline for the issues I faced and the things I liked. Tldr; Bloodmoon is good, but fundamentally less interesting than Tribunal, also quite often ugly I should preface that I only managed to complete a few quests in the EEC questline, as I locked myself out of completion due to the other questline having the cute quirk of aggroing every person in a 3000 mile radius whenever I wanted to travel somewhere, but, what I did experience of the EEC questline was good. As for the 'main' questline, I liked it, I like that there's a choice here, and the choice is pretty impactful. I intentionally chose to experience morrowind as a werewolf, and rapidly learned that morrowind fucking sucks as a werewolf, forced transformations make playing the game pretty much impossible outside of clearing dungeons. I'm sure it's good for roleplay, but given that you have to cure it to even get the ability to properly control it with the main quest reward, I fundamentally find it a bit confusing. The final dungeon, is as people have said before me, absolutely miserable as an experience, tedious and boring at best, softlocking characters who aren't prepared at worst. Narratively speaking, I think there's something here, but ultimately I don't actually care about these characters, this culture, their issues, not because they're just fundamentally distant from morrowinds events, but also because we actually spend such a vanishingly small amount of time learning about said culture. Yes we do quests for them, but the sheer breadth of knowledge we have on the Dunmer means that meeting almalexia is itself just a fundamentally interesting experience. At the time, I'm sure meeting Hircine would have been exciting, and I'll admit I found the finale somewhat charming if just kinda 'and then this happened' with little pre-existing justification. However, in the modern era, where I have already played so many elderscrolls games and met so many fucking daedric gods, I really just am not particularly wowed by it. Possibly a failing of the presentation in later games. Quests as a whole are pretty good, and I really enjoyed the proving quests with the Skaal, I did not enjoy the hircine quests, and maybe from the Skaals perspective they're more enjoyable, but that's fundamentally because the Hircine quests presentation and restrictions make them very irritating and a chore. The fights in bloodmoon are generally better than Tribunal, enemies are more diverse, and generally less tedious to fight than the base games enemies while offering unique mechanics and designs. Tribunal is fundamentally prettier in terms of tileset, but genuinely both are fucking terrible at making dungeons, though I did enjoy the draugr dungeons I experienced in Bloodmoon. The worldspace feels poorly built and feels actively antagonistic with morrowinds base draw distance, it just feels constantly unfamiliar and I'm constantly looking at the map to know where I am on the flat plains of Solstheim. As a whole, I do think it doesn't do what Tribunal does badly, and in that sense I appreciate it, but I do think it is a pretty poor capstone to morrowind as an experience. I don't know if it's better than tribunal, it has its own glaring flaws, and I would argue I liked it less than Tribunal despite Tribunal being fundamentally poorer as an experience, the novelty and distance it founds itself from the basegame helped, but I also gave it less time, and maybe the charm would have been found outside of the main quest. Maybe were the worldspace a little nicer, I'd have found it all much more enjoyable, since it really does detract from it, Solthseim is not a place I want to spend time in fundamentally.
