I received new instructions from Master Einarth today.

I am to remove all of the books from the library pertaining to the Thunder Lords and Storm Ravens. We are ordered to DESTROY them I don’t know how i can bring myself to do it, they contain so much history, not just of the Storm Ravens and Thunderlords but the academy, the royals, and even the magic of dragons themselves.

We were told that they brought the

Corruption upon us, whether this was accidentally or deliberately, that shouldn’t mean we should destroy all this knowledge. What if we need it? Perhaps I can hide the books instead, and tell Master Einarth I destroyed them?

I have discovered that the Royal Wing is full of hidden passages and rooms, concealed behind all manner of puzzles and secret doors. I found several perfect places to hide the books. I have decided I should split them up, so if some are found others are still protected. The Royal Wing is forbidden to the students so there is little danger of them stumbling upon the hidden volumes. The King is hardly in residence these days, the royals are the only ones likely to know where any of the rooms are  they may never be found I should leaves clues to their locations, should I forget myself.

Dragonmites pt1

Dragonmites are a parasitic mite that are commonly found in dragons, especially those that live in the wild. These blood sucking creatures pierce the skin between dragon scales to feed on its blood. Dragonmites are prolific and can very quickly spread between dragons that housed in close proximity if undiscovered or untreated. The mites typically cause irritation, discomfort, and while in themselves do not pose a great health risk, can make your dragon susceptible to more serious illnesses. Dragon Mites vary in size,depending on the size of the host and the potency of the magic in its blood, but freshly hatched mites are around 2mm in diameter and will often change colour to closely match your dragons scales.

However spotting Dragonmites is relatively simple if you know where to look, These parasitic creatures will cluster around the dragons eyes, nostrils and on the underside of the dragons jaw, where they have easier access to the dragons skin. While they are sometimes found on the membrane of a dragons wings this is less common as a dragon will regularly preen in this area.

Dragonmites pt2

Dragon Mite infestations are not typically life threatening. In serious cases, where the dragon may for example have a particular sensitivity or allergy to the saliva of the mites, an infestation can cause bad swelling, reduction in appetite and aggressive irritability.

To treat you dragon’s mites it is advised to give your dragon a soak in a warm Betadine bath for at least 20 minutes followed by a good rub own with a high quality magical scale oil. If the infestation is serious this may need to be repeated several times. You must also remove all of the bedding from where your dragon is housed, thoroughly clean it, preferably with a dragon safe insecticide, and give your dragon all new bedding after the treatment is complete.

Algae Potentia

Algae Potentia is a magical algae like organism that feeds on naturally occurring ambient magic in the world. It has been observed to outcompete all other plants it comes across when it has access to plentiful resources.

In areas where Dragons and Storm Ravens nest the Algae does not appear to grow. It is theorised that this is because the creatures absorb the ambient magic in the surrounding area depriving the organism of its food source.

Order of Trees

I have been wandering in the academy grounds for inspiration. The trees are observing me, i am sure of it. Doctor Harris says that they cannot be, that trees do not have eyes or ears. Is he simply wrong or is he lying to me. The doctor always speaks to me with kind words but there is something behind his eyes, fear, concern or deceit?

Perhaps he is part of it, yes. The walls speak to me, they tell me the trees are not to be trusted nor is the doctor, he belongs to the trees, and he will protect them over me. Can I even trust the walls and their words?

They are made of stone, the natural enemy of wood, they would try to turn me against the trees. DO they speak some truths? They say that Doctor Harris is sworn to the trees. He did take the oath, and everyone knows that Hipporcrates himself said “Nature itself is the best physician”, what if he meant that literally. Maybe the trees want to help me, or want my help? Do I trust them and attempt to commune with them, or do I place my faith on the walls?

Magical Nature

I am often called insane or ‘unstable’ by the members of the academy, this is simply because they cannot see or accept particulars of the universe that I am able to. The first and most poignant is the COLOUR OF MAGIC. I can see it, and have been able to since my own magic was truely awakened. It manifests as an aura around creatures, people and objects that flow with magic. The stronger the magical potential the larger and brighter the aura.

Should I have to compare it to a colour that others are able to see i would say it most closely resembles the colour cheese. As for its sound, I would assert that magical entities hum with the sound of orange. These facts, to me, are undeniable. Perhaps it is my unique gift, others do not seem to have the ability to see magic itself. I have tried so hard to educate the senior members of the academy to the knowledge I believe the universe itself has gifted me with. My reward for this, i am restricted to the academy itself and am not to leave its grounds or go into the capital proper. It matters not, my research can be done within the walls of the school. The City holds little interest to me.

Tooth Troubles?

Dragon teeth are rapidly growing and while they can replace a damaged tooth it is best to be patient.

Check the tooth:

Is it loose? Give it a tug, a tooth ready to come out will come away easily with only slight pressure.

Does it hurt the dragon? Stroke the tooth with a finger to see if the dragon moves away. If so then get some of the numbing creams and brush it on the gums. Do not get it on your hands as you will end up limp wristed.

Is there something wedged between it and a neighboring tooth? A lot of loose appearing teeth just need a good cleaning. Don’t be afraid to get in there and pick out bits of chewed toy, or food.

Remember to check that the dragon hasn’t been storing meat in it’s gums. It is not uncommon to think of that reddish flesh as signs of a sore tooth, when it’s just a bit of meat.

Our situation continues to become more dire.

Unbeknownst to myself a forward scouting party was instructed to collect samples of the corruption, predictably this went poorly.

As soon as they made the slightest contact with the corruption it seems it infected poor Markus. He described it as a large amount almost jumping onto him when he got close, and leaching into his skin before he could remove it. They tell me William immediately tried to help him get it off and absorbed some himself, but it seems far less than Markus They quickly returned to base and were quarantined, but i fear this is too little too late, we have now seen what it does to the flora and fauna of Terraventus. What will it do to humans, and humans with magic at that.

Symbiosis Pt1

Decades before man began to tame dragons there has always been a relationship between wild Storm Raven and the Dragon. It is known that the blood of a Dragon is potent with magical power, and when it is consumed by another species it causes them to grow larger and more powerful than they would under natural circumstances.

Juvenile dragons and dragon eggs have been prey to the adults of species such as the Griffin, the Hippogriff and Dire Wolves because of this. It seems that the Storm Ravens have found a more peaceful and efficient way of gaining these benefits, by forming a symbiotic relationship with the dragons. The Dragons allow Storm Ravens to share their nests, the birds act as a guard of sorts, alerting the dragons to predators and in return it seems that the dragons willingly share their magical power with the Storm Ravens, allowing them to grow much larger than the birds that do not cohabit with dragons.

Treat Scale Rot

Scale rot among dragons is rare but serious. If you find your dragon faintly smells of cheese even after a bath and oiling then they may have scale rot. Dry scrubbing with hay or fine saw dust is the surest way to expose scale rot as the dust will stick to the scales even at the earliest stages. Before you start damning your name, your cow and kicking doors know that there are several amazingly effective treatments.

Elderberry oils, while strongly scented, can be very effective to dry out the scales and help them harden.

Lavender’s Scale sheen is sold and is sometimes used for it’s delicate lavender scent scent but is a highly recommended treatment.

For advanced scale rot, report to the healers as the scales have to be removed and the skin treated with strong creams.

Stop Scale Rot

Through proper husbandry Scale rot need not be an issue. Dragon nesting habits are very important and need to be properly balanced.

Humidity and rapid temperature changes effect growth and health of scales, especially in younger dragons. Cleanliness and sunlight exposure are vital in maintaining healthy scales in all dragons, and sand basking on bright days is greatly recommended. If you ensure your dragons bedding is clean and dry, and you feed a proper diet with appropriate exercise, then there is very little risk of Scale Rot.

Building a Nest

In order to hatch a dragon egg without an adult dragon you must build a specialised nest. You will need; Eight Hay bales. A CampFire. Four Candles and Four Lavender Plants.

To assemble the nest place the Eight Bales of Hay in a tree by three grid with a space in the centre. Place a campfire in the centre space between the bales. You must then place four candles on top of the bales of hay in the CORNERS. ONE candle on each corner. Lavender should then be placed on top of the remaining four bales of hay. You have now built a nest for your egg, Congratulations. Make sure that your campfire is lit and place your egg on it. It will take some time for your egg to begin to hatch, so be sure to check on it regularly. This is the process to begin the hatching , once it is complete you will need to perform the hatching ritual to meet your new dragon. We believe that this artificial nest works because the hay mimics the nest of wild dragons, the candles provide a warm ambience the egg would experience in the wild, and the campfire naturally provides the flame they would get from a parent. The need for the lavender is unknown, sprigs have been regularly found in the wild nests and the man made nests do not work without it. Our researchers are divided on its importance but popular opinion is simply that Dragons like lavender.

The Flowers

In the elder age, when dragons still shadowed the earth, I, Hareth the Gardener, wrote this for those who would guard what remains.

South east of the Academy lies a field upon a gentle hill, beside an old tree and near the water’s edge. It was touched by dragon magic when dragons were common, and so it blooms beyond nature’s law.

There grow magical lavender, soothing fear and restless thought; Torchflower, burning bright against cold and dark; Dandelions bearing wishes and old wind memories; and Poppies, red as dawn and sacrifice. 

Upon the hill stands a ward stone with a light on top, pale as a captive star. While that light endures, the field remembers itself. If it fails, petals blacken, roots shudder, and the storm of corruption will come to consume it.

So guard this place well. Let the tree stand, the water run clear, and the flowers remain untouched, lest beauty, memory, and ancient magic perish forever.

It has been three weeks since we first became aware of the corruption in the country. Every day it creeps closer to the capital, seemingly polluting everything in its path. It is now only 7 miles away. We estimate that at this rate we have perhaps 3 or 4 weeks before it takes over completely

Everyone who is able is frantically researching ways we may destroy it, or at least slow its progress so we have more time.

The Scouts are monitoring its progression from Dragonback, noone dares get close enough to touch it. We have yet to see what it would do to a dragon, or it’s rider and it is not worth the risk to find out ---------

Hatching Ritual

In the oldest dragon rites, no egg wakes by warmth alone. The Ritual of Hatching must be prepared within a large ritual circle, wide enough for ancient breath to gather and for the sleeping spirit inside the shell to hear its summons.

At the heart of the circle rests a single Dragon Ritual Stone. Within it are laid the sacred offerings.

One Amethyst Shard to call starlight, one Feather to guide first flight, one Torch to kindle life, one Lavender bloom to soothe the newborn soul, ten Wheat to promise abundance, ten Beef to promise strength, and one Cracked Dragon Egg, waiting for release.

When the centre quartz block is ignited, the circle drinks in health, energy, and mana, then exhales them back as life reborn. The shell breaks. The hatchling rises.

Death Dorm

Behind the hearth of the Life Dorm, where laughter warmed the halls and green vines climbed the windows, there waited a colder room.

No student knew the fireplace was a door. It had been sealed with magic, lost dreams, and memories everyone had forgotten to mourn. Beyond it lay the Death Dorm, hidden in time, its beds made with sheets of dust, its mirrors reflecting faces that had never lived.

There, the mockery of life was kept: birthday candles burning black, music boxes playing lullabies backward, portraits smiling with stitched mouths.

For a century, the seal slept.

Then the dragon rider came.

Ash fell from his cloak. His beast’s shadow filled the Life Dorm windows. In his palm curled crime magic, red and unlawful, stolen from broken oaths. He touched the fireplace.

The flames turned blue.

Behind the bricks, the Death Dorm opened its eyes and whispered, “At last.”

The life mage stood where the battlefield ended, purple hair whipping through smoke like a banner of dusk. Around her, the dead lay silent, and the sky seemed too ashamed to shine.

She knelt beside a fallen child and pressed her palms to the earth. Green light poured from her fingers, spreading through the soil, over broken shields, into cold hands.

lowers burst from cracks in the stone. Vines wrapped shattered spears. Breath returned, not to every body, but to the world itself.

Death towered before her, faceless and vast.

“You cannot undo me” it whispered.

The mage rose, tears bright on her cheeks. “No,” she said, “but I can grow beyond you.”

Her magic lifted her above the field, radiant as spring. Below, survivors looked up and saw not grief defeated, but hope reborn.

Dragonling Care

In captivity, dragon babies need constant care. They can become easily bored when not attend to properly, and are at risk of minor health issues when not cleaned well (see reference books on Scale Rot & Dragonmites)

Even in infancy, dragons enjoy gold. It is unknown how they are aware of gold’s worth, but they find joy in hoarding wealth. Giving a baby dragon gold in ingot or nugget form yields interesting results.

Ingots are the preferred form of gold, lending itself to a game the babies enjoy playing, but nuggets can spark a curiosity in the wider world.

Much like small wolf pups, dragons delight in a simply game of fetch with thier handler. Using a few feathers and a stick, I have discovered how to create a rudimentary ball to toss to the dragonlings.

On the topic of cleaning, babies find it hard to preen their own scales as their neck is too short and not flexible enough to reach the difficult areas. In the wild, a mother would do this for them. In captivity, however, the handler must assume this role.

Using a brush fashioned from a stick and a couple of feathers, I have been able to prevent the spread of scale rot in groups of dragons.

The diet of a dragon is important. As carnivorous beasts, they enjoy partaking in pork & beef. Chicken does not seem to interest them, possibly due to their winged nature, akin to the dragon’s own.

Lavender is no more than a snack to dragonkind and provides little nutrients, so ensure that your dragon does not get fat on the flower.

Dragon Feeding

It is important to feed your Dragon an Appropriate diet.

Dragons are primarily carnivores. In the wild they would hunt animals such as deer and wild boar. They have also been known to hunt other predators when the dragon is large enough to do so and the opportunity arises.

Dragons will consume all parts of a carcass. Because of this it is important, if you primarily feed your dragon lean meat, to dust your dragons meals with calcium powder once every few weeks.

Raw Pork is a popular choice for dragon keepers as it is a well balanced protein source for dragons.

Dragons also seem to enjoy chewing Lavender, although it seems this is done for pleasure, rather than a nutritional need.

Purrs Beyond

Corruption does not kill quickly. It listens first.

It settles in the blood like cold ink, learning every heartbeat, every fear, every hidden wish to live. Then it feeds.

Grass pales beneath corrupted feet. Trees bend inward, their leaves turning grey before falling upward into dust. Rivers lose their song. Animals flee until their strength fails, and even stone grows brittle where the sickness sleeps.

In people, it begins as warmth. A gift, they think. Stronger hands sharper sight, dreams filled with whispers. But each borrowed power costs another piece of life. Laughter fades. memories thin. Hunger remains.

Corruption does not hate the living. Hatred would mean choice. It is emptiness with teeth a wound pretending to be a god.

Where it spreads, nothing truly dies.

Everything is eaten, remembered, and made hungry too.

The Eyes of the Corrupted

The first sign is never the skin. It is the eyes.

Corruption gathers there like smoke behind glass, dim at first, almost mistaken for tiredness. The whites darken with faint violet veins, and the pupil seems too deep, as though something beneath the face is staring back.

In candlelight, corrupted eyes do not shine. They drink the flame.

Those touched by it may still speak kindly, smile warmly, and remember their names, but their gaze betrays the hunger within. The longer corruption feeds, the less human the eyes become. Colour drains away, replaced by a bruised glow.

Never stare too long.

Corruption is patient. Through the eyes, it studies fear, longing, grief, and weakness. Many who looked closely swore they saw a trapped soul begging silently from far behind the darkness. Then the darkness blinked first.

Today I found an elder scale beneath black glass. It held no mana, no echo, no warmth. Around it every relic bears the same emptiness.

My conclusion chills me: the dragons did not destroy corruption. They starved it.

Or… I could be wrong.

They gathered all mana, from beast, mage, egg, and ancient wing, then tore it beyond the veil. Corruption lost its feast and faded from this world.

But banished things are not dead.

If enough mana gathers again, and some fool calls into the dark, the hunger may answer.

The Double Soul

Among the darkest names preserved in forbidden records, none is spoken with more dread than the Double Soul. It was not born from corruption alone, but from a terrible joining of opposites.

Corruption gave it hunger. Goodness gave it purpose. Mana gave it form. Life gave it motion. Bless gave it voice. Solar gave it brilliance. Iron gave it weight and will.

Thus it became an impossible being: not merely evil, but evil clothed in holy light.

Those who witness the Double Soul speak of a presence that feels wrong in two directions at once. One half calls like salvation, warm and radiant, promising healing, truth, and peace. The other half devours hope, feeding on fear, guilt, and longing. Together they make a perfect snare.

It does not destroy by force alone. It temps, blesses, then breaks.

For that is its true horror: the Double Soul wears the face of mercy, while carrying the heart of corruption.

Place upon the Dragon Stone an egg for the life yet unopened, a feather for the soul that may rise, and raw chicken meat for the body gladly left behind. Keep one living chicken within the ring, calm and untouched, so Eternal Soul may know the scent of breath.

Ignite the centre quartz. Speak no fear. Resist no pulling warmth. As the circle darkens, offer your mana to the gathering light and trust that the rite will choose fairly.

When the air sings, power shall answer. The Eternal Soul will reveal the path to cheat death, preserve fading life, and awaken dragons yet too weak to rise.

Even without a dragon by your side yet, you already carry yourself like someone meat for the skies. That takes courage.

I heard how hard you have been working, learning the old ways, practicing every lesson, and refusing to give up when things are difficult. I think that matters even more than flying.

Anyone can dream of being a dragon rider, but not everyone has the heart to keep going before the dream becomes real.

Starlight Blessing Ritual

Some blessings do not fall from the heavens.

They must be invited.

Set a basic candle circle beneath open sky, or wherever the memory of stars can still be felt. Near the candles, scatter eight measures of glowstone dust, bright as captured dawn, and four amethyst shards, clear enough to hold celestial song.

When the circle is prepared, ignite the centre quartz.

If the rite accepts you, a pale blue radiance will gather at your feet and rise through your body like gentle lighting. Your eyes will open to the hidden paths of darkness, and your steps will quicken as though the stars themselves pull you forward.

For a short while, night will lose its power over you.

Walk with care, blessed one.
