    It was one of her rare once-a-month "everything" baths; full scale scrub, hair wash, shaving, and intensive aftercare for her scales. Like most snakes, shedding skin was a natural occurring thing. And to her size, the shedding only prolonged to points where she needed a few hours to herself in cleaning all of that.

    Jonathan offered to wash her hair during the occasion. She told him about it, warning him that it was going to be very long and exhausting. His smile assured her that he didn't mind it. He was intimidating and for good reason. But she didn't expect to get him to talk about why. Carmen could visualize his stories in her head, picturing what he put himself up against. To a regular upstanding citizen, it was horrifying. To her, however, it was impressive. Scary, but impressive.

    ... maybe "impressive" was the wrong word to use it for. He didn't sound as excited about it from how roughly he made it to be. Trauma had its ways in how it manifested in people. It made her wonder just what made this DSO agent survive as long as he did.
