gyro and johnny as kids. i think puberty hit gyro like freight train. i feel like they were both super goofballs at a very young age, gyro would bite people and johnny would roll around outside for hours. and then they serioused. gyro withdrawn into his studies and johnny quiet at nick’s progress. gyro secretly tousles with his siblings and johnny secretly still befriends little animals. when they meet each other after a long time of soulful troubles with something or other, they find a partnership with no judgement, able to act with the same freedom they did as little kids.

reference to the painting by caravaggio. i also tried to render using his technique, black and white to color.

although the referential piece and story is based around a joyful event rather than a tragic one, i thought i’d play around with the not-so-subtle homoeroticism of italian catholic art (this one is from the baroque period). and… it just fits with these two. i’ve said it before, but gyro’s equated to christ (in value, to johnny) in the manga, as well as from an analytical standpoint. i feel like sbr was tailored particularly to my interests sometimes what with dinosaurs, weird religious shit, the setting, cowboys, POTUS is the villian.. its just too good…
