Prompt for April 10: Favorite Main Character (Human)
I think I knew it was going to be this one from the moment I saw him. He made quite a first impression, that’s for sure. Subsequently spending months trying to figure out what the heck to call him before I learned his name probably helped.
I don’t know where to start, tbh, a lot of what I like about him now is shit I made up, but he is at his core the same goofy, sassy, hot-head he always was. He was the star of my longest and biggest story I ever made - which I started back in middle school and continued making stuff up for pretty much until a few years ago (it was edgy as fuck and has since been retired in favor of a different story but it taught me a lot about what I wanted in my writing and I look back on it fondly even though I’m never touching it again), I’ve put him in so many aus and pseudo-sequels and crossovers it’s RIDICULOUS, but he’s such a versatile and canonically adaptable character that it all at least somewhat works. He’s the most stable of the bunch with his biggest problem being not taking things seriously enough, which is probably a good thing despite how often it gets him into trouble. That’s why he’s the leader of a team, after all. I think Takuya’s also the one who really kick-started my obsession with the element of fire - my favorites tend to have an association with it, be it in personality or in a more literal sense or both. I based quite a few of my own ocs on him too, either in looks or, again, personality. He was just… a very formative character for me, and he’s still my favorite in the entire franchise as well as my biggest comfort character. I don’t know what better praise to give him than that.
”My social battery is drained”, Kouichi said and got up from the floor. ”I’m heading to bed.”
He stretched, waved goodbye to the others and headed to Takuya’s room. He expected Kouji to come along since it was already half past nine and Kouji must be getting tired, but Kouji was sitting leaned against Takuya with a notebook on his lap that he was writing intensly in. Kouichi changed into pyjamas, grabbed a book and made himself comfortable in his sleeping bag.
In the living room Takuya and Tomoki were playing Super Mario Smash, while Izumi and Junpei was deep in discussion about the trains in Italy. Kouji yawned, then kept writing. At a quarter past ten Junpei got up to head to bed and Izumi followed him.
”Think they’re together yet?” Takuya asked.
Kouji shrugged. His writing was getting more illegible by the minute. He laid down on the couch, head on Takuya’s lap and tried to remember what he was even working on.
”They’re probably asking the same about us”, he said with a yawn.
”Wanna get together?” Takuya asked with a grin.
Kouji rolled his eyes and was gonna answer, but Tomoki cut in before he could.
”Takuya-oniisan, focus on the game or I’ll win!”
”Hai, hai”, Takuya laughed and focused on the game again.
At a quarter to eleven Kouji was starting to drift off. Tomoki yawned and Takuya paused the game.
”Alright, time for bed”, he said. Kouji and Izumi were usually the responsible ones, but he could play that part for today. He was their leader after all.
”awww, five more minutes?” Tomoki complained.
”We’ll play more in the morning! And beside we don’t need to sleep, just go to bed so when we do get tired we don’t need to walk allllll the way over to my room.”
He nudged Kouji and Kouji blinked awake.
”Sounds good?” he mumbled and sat up.
”Someone’s gonna fall asleep really fast I bet.”
Takuya’s bet got rewarded with a swift hit by Kouji’s notebook. Takuya only laughed in response. Tomoki turned the game off and hurried towards the bedroom. Takuya and Kouji got up from the couch and put the dishes and bowls with chips away so Shinya wouldn’t get to them when he woke up. Kouji almost dropped a glass and Takuya looked at him.
”You good?”
”Just tired.”
Kouji yawned to drive his point home and Takuya smiled fondly.
”It is almost an hour after your bedtime.”
”I don’t have a bedtime.”
”Because you always fall asleep at ten! Come on, let’s get you tucked in before you fall asleep standing here.”
Kouji stuck his tongue out towards Takuya, but follwed him to the bedroom. Tomoki was changing into his pyjamas and Izumi and Kouichi was talking in low voices to not wake Junpei up.
”Alright everyone, lights out!” Takuya called.
Kouji’s world turned pitch black as Takuya flicked the switch. He froze in place. The world wasn’t actually black, he was pretty sure of that. There was a window and there should be streetlights outside. But the streetlights didn’t provide enough light for him to make out anything in the room.
”Kouji?” Takuya asked.
This is fine, Kouji thought. He could guess his way to his sleeping bag. It was next to Kouichi’s and Kouichi’s bag was next to the desk and the desk was… to Kouji’s… left? He was pretty sure it was forward and left. How had he not memorized the layout of Takuya’s bedroom yet?
”You okay there?” Takuya said from somewhere to Kouji’s right and Kouji turned around to face him.
”Yeah, everything’s fine.”
He could hear disbelief in Takuya’s sigh. Was he even actually facing him? Wait, where was the desk now? Kouji turned left again but he was certain he turned to far. Everything was fine, he just had to wait 20 minutes, that’s how long people said it took for the eyes to adjust to darkness.
”...do you need me to turn the lights on again?”
Yes please
”No, it’s fine.” It should be fine. The others were fine, he could hear them moving around, could hear Kouichi turn another page in his book. He took a hesitant step forward.
”Oof”, Junpei’s voice cut through the darkness and Kouji’s cheeks burned. ”Kouji? What’s going on?”
Kouji took a step back and collided with Takuya instead. His breathing picked up. Where was his bed? Takuya’s hands grabbed his shoulders.
”Did you suddenly go blind or something?” he asked and Kouji wanted to elbow him but it wasn’t far from the truth.
”Sorry, Junpei”, he said and completely ignored Takuya’s question. Takuya laughed.
”You did! That’s hilarious!”
”I can see just fine!”
Takuya laughed again.
”Oh yeah? Why don’t you get to your spot without stepping on anyone then?”
Kouji had absolutely no idea where his spot was in relation to Junpei’s and he didn’t move. He hid his face in his hands but realized the others could still see him and quickly took them down again. How did he not know his night vision was this bad?
”Kouji?”
That was Kouichi’s voice and Kouji let out a whine.
”Niisan.”
He hated how absolutely helpless his voice sounded. If Kouichi kept talking, maybe he could follow Kouichi’s voice to find the bed. But Kouichi didn’t say anything more. He could hear the others moving around, it sounded like Tomoki was making his way into his sleeping bag, someone else was crawling out of theirs.
”Should we call someone?” Izumi asked.
Kouji just wanted them to give him 20 minutes so maybe he’d be able to see something again. Takuya’s hands disappeared from his shoulders and there was nothing anchoring Kouji in the wast darkness that surrounded him. He clenched his hands, tried to force his body to breathe normally. Something touched his arm and he turned around, brought his knee up to attack. Whatever it was moved out of the way and he stumbled forwards.
”I deserved that”, Kouichi said and made a new attempt at grabbing Kouji’s arm. ”Our beds are over here, sorry for scaring you.”
”I could just turn the lights on again”, Takuya offered.
”Niisan…”
Kouji was suddenly so tired. He leaned forwards and Kouichi stepped up to catch him and let him bury his face into Kouichi’s shoulder.
”I think we’re fine now”, Kouichi said and put a hand on Kouji’s back. ”It’s just gonna bother everyone’s eyes at this point.”
He pressed his hand against Kouji’s back and guided him towards their sleeping bags. He handed Kouji his pyjamas and Takuya passed them, stepping right over Izumi to get to his bed. Izumi threw a pillow at him, but laughed. Kouji didn’t need to see to be able to change clothes, but Kouichi quickly stopped him when he was about to dump his clothes on Junpei. That answered the question of his bag in relation to Junpei’s at least. He crawled into the bag, listened as Kouichi took his book up again and Izumi and Takuya argued playfully.
”So…” Junpei said, ”why didn’t you tell us your night vision is this terrible?”
Kouji groaned. They probably thought he didn’t trust them.
”I didn’t know”, Kouji answered.
”You didn’t know you’re completely blind in the dark?” Takuya laughed. ”That is absolutely hilarious.”
Kouji wanted to argue but instead he chuckled.
”Yeah, I guess.”
”How do you not know something like that though?” Tomoki asked.
”It never really comes up?” Kouji yawned. ”I’m usually first to bed and don’t turn off the lights. And I have a lamp on my bedside table at home…”
His voice trailed off. Kouichi put a hand on his shoulder.
”Go to sleep, we’ll laugh more at you in the morning.”
Kouji didn’t need more than that. He was out two seconds later. Takuya laughed.
”Today we learned that Kouji can’t see shit in darkness.”
”I got so worried”, Izumi looked at the twins. ”He was so still I thought something was really wrong.”
Junpei stretched and made himself comfortable on the floor again.
”At least he didn’t step on you. What a way to wake up.” He yawned. ”I’m gonna go back to sleep, the rest of you staying up?”
”A while”, Tomoki said. ”I’m not tired yet!”
”I’m not gonna talk”, Kouichi said. ”My social energy is still drained.”
”You were talking to Izumi when we came in though”, Takuya remarked.
Kouichi didn’t answer. The other three didn’t bother him again, instead they started making plans for the next day. Kouji rolled closer to Kouichi and Kouichi put a hand on his shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. Slowly the discussion between Takuya, Izumi and Tomoki died out as they fell asleep. Kouichi stayed awake one more hour before putting his book away and sliding down to sleep. He looked towards Kouji.
”Next time just let us help you, you idiot”, he whispered.
Kouji kept sleeping and Kouichi closed his own eyes, allowed himself to fall asleep. He’d have to make sure the others didn’t tease Kouji too much over this in the morning.

I think Takuya should have been stuck as flamon a bit longer. I want the rest of the gang to see him like this and tease him lightheartedly and deal with the fact that he just runs on all fours without thinking. I just really want the interactions
Episode 22 - As previously stated [Here] The episode where Takuya returns home as Flamon is my all time favorite. I actually just re-watched it the other night (Japanese Version) and my gods Junko Takeuchi sell it. Not to discredit Michael Reisz he does a fabulous job here too, but her panicked cries and terrorized voice overs sound so genuine.
To recap, I love this entire episode front to back and it narratively accomplishes a Time travel/loop/dilation Very well and they can be super tricky to write- I know I’ve tried.
Random side note- BOTH of the VA’s for Takuya in English and Japanese nearly blew out their voices with all the yelling/screaming/growly voice work. So much so that Dave Wittenberg took over the voice for EmperorGreymon because Michael refused (also did the movie) and Junko begged to have Kouji’s VA voice Susanoomon. Voice Actors deserve better.
Bonus side note- Miss Junko also provides the voice for Naruto.
Episode 28 - Also as previously stated, ShadowSeraphimon is hands down amazing and criminal that we only get him for part of one episode. The way he goes after Takuya, he comes within mere inches of killing the boy. It’s brutal, it’s dark and once again Junko is on absolutely point and Mercurymon’s VA, Masutani Yasunori, is so damned diabolical. Even the Dub does a great job here, even with Mercuruymon’s ridiculous Shakespearian thing.
