Small town of Splitska is located between Postira and Supetar and is easily recognised by its waterfront with large palms. It’s an old settlement that was used by the Romans to ship the Brac stone from the nearby quarries. It’s so charming - it’s a must-stop on your tour of the island.

Easter is a fun time in Brac. There are several related traditions. Some are strongly Christian while the others celebrate the arrival of Spring. Such is the custom of painting eggs and sometimes decorating the olive trees. The sweet bread 'pinca' or 'sirnica' is another one of the sweets that traditionally needs no refrigeration. Easter breakfast is much heavier and contains a lot of ham, meat etc. In the afternoon kids exchange the pained eggs (often only in natural colours, such as the onion peel) and then run the egg fights. By the evening time the long day is over, there was no works in the fields and everyone goes to sleep exhausted and well fed. A regular day follows...

Residents of Brac are particularly creative when it comes to doing their laundry and drying it. You will see ropes stretched above the narrow cobalt streets and alleys with bedding and clothes hanging till you can almost reach them from the ground. In smaller villages connecting houses to trees and linking different objects with the ropes provides all the space they need to dry the items that get changed often in the summer. You can never have enough space. Even high up in the trees (as this pic shows) is good enough for selected items. This photo was taken in Skrip and while it may seem to you a hundred years old, it was taken in December 2015 - a testimony to how slowly the time lapses in Brac.

From the ancient Roman days, goats of Brac have been almost sacred animals (“capris laudata Brattia” as Pliny the Elder puts it in his Natural History from 77-79 AD). For centuries every home had a herd: their milk was used for dairy products and the meat fed generations. They are also incredibly kind animals and kids used to play with them, almost until recently. Today they are much more rare, but you will still see some of these gorgeous animals on top of some cliffs or hills, eating grass that is naturally salty and looking very strong. They are also curious. This one was posing for the photo on 06 December 2015.

Postira haven't changed in years, decades... even a century ago this picture would only have smaller boats parked in the little harbour. But the town remains the same. Even what the people do tends to fall in the same pattern over the years. The time stands still in most parts of Brac. It's timeless. That's why it's an amazing place to visit and explore. Yachting and sailing have become very popular at the island of Brac. This special type of holidays/accommodation allows you to see the island from the unusual perspective. You can also visit all the coves, many of which are inaccessible by car and remain true jewels yet undiscovered and unspoiled. Many choose to take part in various competitions and events all around Brac. An interesting one is the night regatta organised every August in Postira. Year after year, the number of boats circling the island grows and this sport/holiday format is certainly up in popularity.

The old fishing boats supply the fish factory that’s been located in Postira for over a hundred years and it is one of the best known in Croatia. The boats sail out in the moonlight and return the following morning with shipload of fish. The nets need to be repaired through the day and you often see old fishermen knitting. The kids come early in the morning to watch and sometimes help with unloading, while elderly wonder if they can buy a bit of fish to make it for lunch. Some of it is indeed destined for street sale, rather than the factory. This is how it has been forever, because that’s how the community survives in collaboration with one another. There’s so much more to the picture of that boat. Mediterranean as it once was.

The island of Brac has a large number of patron saints - each village has its own. While there’s a religious component to it, clearly the more popular one is the festival that carries on well into the night. Donji Humac near Supetar yesterday celebrated St. Anne, and people from all over Brac flooded its stairs and alleys in the evening hours for the concert, food and drinks. There’s also a bit of the competition spirit among the villages: who will attract a famous star to perform, who will attend, how many people will come, who will keep partying until later into the night etc. These ‘fjeras’ have become one of the trademarks of Brac and an event that gives you a bit of the traditional taste of the island.
