1980s Fisherman Garfield
1986 postcard from the Maryland Watermen’s Association depicting Chesapeake Bay oyster fishermen furling sails on their skipjack, a traditional sail-powered fishing vessel of the Chesapeake Bay. Due to local restrictions on the use of power boats for dredging, a handful of skipjacks continue to dredge for oysters in the bay to this day.

Fishermen from Kherson with their catch of greater sturgeons, 1920s
Sturgeons had been thriving in the Dnipro River until the construction of the Kakhovka Dam in 1956, which disrupted their habitat and drove them out completely. After the russian troops destroyed the dam in 2023, sturgeons have been spotted in the Dnipro after 70 years of absence.
Although, recreation of this photo is not advised. Greater sturgeon is a legally protected species in Ukraine.
In 2018, during Kerala’s floods in India, local fishermen took fishing boats into flooded areas and helped rescue about 65,000 stranded people. Official records say 4,537 fishermen and 669 boats joined the rescue effort, turning fishing boats into emergency lifeboats.
