emrys as part of the family is so funny. he has one room that they let him keep clean and if a victim bleeds in there then he scolds you for bleeding on his clean floors
Saki picks at a stray thread on the sheets, averting his gaze as Emrys details how desperately he had tried to escape the past. Saki can’t blame Emrys; after all, he had fled to California at the first chance that he got. At the time, it seemed that the only way to combat the experience was to run. Even if he never made his peace with it, even if the nightmares followed him no matter where he went, at least he wouldn’t be anywhere near that fucking house. At least other people wouldn’t recognize him or know where his scars came from. At least they wouldn’t ask him questions about that day or how he survived. At least there would be some semblance of peace, as fabricated as it was.
“And how’s that going for you?” Saki asks, a cruel hint to his tone. He doesn’t mean to be so harsh with Emrys, but there’s a bitterness that’s been cultivated by years of feeling sorry for himself, and he doesn’t have the stomach to swallow it. Instead, Saki licks his lips and adds, “Is California everything you dreamed it would be?” He can’t imagine that it is. Saki thinks that it is probably like every other place that Emrys has visited, still just as nausea inducing as the one before. The change of scenery might have given him a good few weeks of forgetting, but the past probably started eating at him soon after, never satisfied by the chunks it’s already taken out of them.
Emrys lifts Saki’s palm to press his lips to it and Saki looks at him helplessly, unsure if he wants to cup his hand to Emrys’s cheek or scratch at him until he lets go. It was always complicated between them, but now it’s different. Worse. Saki pulls his hand from Emrys’s grip and places it in his lap gently, curling his fingers inward, trapping Emrys’s kiss in his hold. “But were you hoping to find me? Be honest.”
Saki feels Emrys’s arm slide around his waist, strong and sure, and then a kiss dropped onto his bare shoulder, where his shirt has fallen low to expose the pale skin there. His skin crawls. He wants to lean into the small comfort of Emrys’s hold. He wants to push him away as hard as he can manage, until Emrys never comes back. Saki doesn’t do either; he sits there quietly, permitting Emrys’s gentle affections. “What was there to think about?” Saki asks, cruel once more, digging his fingernails into his palm. “We hooked up once. We were hardly close.” If Saki is callous enough, perhaps Emrys will grow sick of him and leave on his own, making Saki’s decision for him.
California is just as bad as everywhere else, but at least he doesn't know anyone here. His sister isn't calling him constantly or sending postcards, his mother isn't desperately trying to send money without his father knowing. It's easier, like this. A clean break.
"Do you want me to have been looking for you?" Emrys asks at last, unusually somber. Everything between them feels raw, and it's so unfamiliar that Emrys has no idea how to navigate it. He doesn't know what the right thing to say is.
"Truthfully, I don't know. When I decided to come here, I wanted to be as far away from everything as I could. Subconsciously it might've been because of you. I don't know anymore." It's the truth, as bland and uninteresting as it is. He didn't decide to go out and find Saki, but he doesn't think California would ever have occurred to him if he didn't know that Saki was here.
"Maybe that's why I couldn't stop thinking about you. We weren't close but I felt like we could've been." He's not normally this serious about anything, but it seems important that Saki understands the impression he left on Emrys. He hesitates, pulling away from Saki a little to really look at him, notice the bags under his eyes and the exhaustion that lingers on his face. He hides it well, but he's doing just as bad as Emrys. "I thought we were the same. I don't think anyone else has ever understood me before."
The party is relatively tame, for campus standards. There are fairy lights strung over the fraternity’s backyard, a circle of people surrounding what Saki presumes is someone doing a keg stand, and a questionable punch on the table propped up along the side of the building. Saki opts for one of the unopened beer bottles instead, not willing to take chances on a mysterious liquid mixed by a pregaming twenty-something year old.
Saki had been properly invited to this party, but he never bothered seeking out the boy that had told him to show up after eight and ask for him by name. He was cute in the sort of boy-next-door way, but not really Saki’s type. In fact, most of the men that he manages a conversation with are disappointing. Saki shakes off someone’s elbow after a dance with them and retires to the corner, nursing another beer.
When Saki’s eyes scan the room, they catch on someone staring at him, gaze hungry. Saki raises his eyebrows and watches as the man crosses the room, pushing through various people, to reach him. The comment that the man exchanges in return of Saki’s barb makes Saki’s expression twist into one of displeasure. He thinks very briefly about dumping the remains of his beer over the man’s stupidly perfect hair. Instead, Saki forces himself to smile, pretending to be pleased by the attention. “Hi, Emrys,” Saki answers with faux cheer, his nails tapping against the beer bottle in annoyance. He reaches up and hooks his free hand in Emrys’s collar, tugging him down and asking ever so sweetly, “Would you like to give that another try?”
A shudder goes down Emrys' spine as the other man pulls him down to his height, his gaze cool, almost cruel. Fuck, that's hot. "Sorry," he says automatically, apologizing with a readiness he rarely feels. He feels meek, almost, like he's rolling over and showing his throat.
Emrys swallows, then drags his eyes away from the exposed skin of the other man's chest and focuses instead on his face. There's a curious, almost cold expression on his face, as though he's waiting for the best way to make Emrys regret his words. If he's being honest, he doesn't regret anything so long as it keeps this guy's attention on him. "I shouldn't have stared. Or said that. You look really good."
He smiles as charmingly as he can and reaches out to tilt the other guy's chin up slightly. "Let me try again?"
@moldboy said: ❝ i never thought i’d see you again. ❞
When Saki left for California, he didn’t expect the trip to end up with him back on Emrys’s shitty mattress. Whatever had been between them, however briefly, was meant to be abandoned back in Texas. He followed his family back to California thinking that if he ran far enough, nothing from that place could follow him. Then, two years later, Saki walked into a random bar and found Emrys behind the counter, topping off someone’s martini with an olive. If Emrys hadn’t noticed him seconds later, Saki would have found another, much worse bar to spend his evening at.
Instead, Emrys hauled him into a booth and talked until Saki found himself back here, half-clothed on Emrys’s bed, knees pulled up to his chest. He rests his head on them, watching as Emrys runs a few fingers over the length of his thigh, awestruck. It isn’t the act that has Emrys amazed into silence, though; they’ve done that before. It’s the fact that Saki is here at all, he imagines.
“I never thought I’d see you again,” Emrys tells him, rustling the sheets as he reaches up to thumb at Saki’s cheek, marveling at the ability to do so. It should make Saki preen, the fact that Emrys is so subdued by the sight of him, but it just makes Saki feel nauseous. If Emrys has found Saki here, miles away, then what’s to say that worse won’t follow?
“You weren’t supposed to,” Saki tells Emrys bluntly, reaching up to pull Emrys’s hand from his cheek. He watches Emrys quietly for a moment before asking, “Why California? You came here, out of all of the places that you could go. Why?”
He didn't mean to follow Saki to California. He'd stayed in school for as long as he could, but his grades went steadily downhill and he woke almost every night from nightmares. He dropped out and moved east, as far away as possible from everything else.
It didn't work. The nightmares kept up.
He fled to California in the hopes that a change of scenery would make him less miserable.
"I wanted not to know anyone. I've been..." Emrys trails off, rubbing the back of his neck. "I've been doing really bad. I just wanted to be somewhere where no one would know anything about what happened." He hadn't meant to find Saki, really. He'd known that he was in California with his family, but he didn't think they'd run into each other. It's a big state.
Emrys kisses Saki's palm, a gesture far too intimate for what they are to each other. He's under no illusions about them having any sort of grand romance, but now that they've reconnected he can't stop touching him. "I wasn't trying to find you specifically or anything, promise."
If he was a better person, maybe he'd offer to leave Saki alone, give him as much space as he needed. Instead, he fits his hand around the curve of Saki's waist and dips his head down to kiss his bare shoulder. "I thought about you a lot."

gazing lovingly at my saki refs commissioned from @solitarysurvival a while back 🔪
@edensflower: ❛ it’s very rude to stare. ❜ for emrys
This party is a total bust. Emrys had come here with a date, some girl who's name he's already forgotten, and is now floating aimlessly, a beer in his hand. He's made out with two people and got invited home with someone else already, but he's bored, and is really just going through the motions of being at the party. Or, at least he was, until he spotted the hottest guy he'd ever seen and he forgot about everything else. He's in the corner, holding a drink like it's personally offensive and looking utterly disinterested. Emrys can't look away. He's never wanted anyone's attention so badly. He's noticed, of course, and Emrys walks over as soon as the other man locks eyes with him. He sounds displeased when he finally speaks, but Emrys hardly cares. He swallows, his mouth dry as he stares at the man in front of him. He's seen a lot of hot people, has slept with a lot of hot people even, but he's never been so thoroughly floored by the sight of another person. The party around them seems to fade away; none of it seems to matter at all. He steps forward, leaning against the wall next to his new friend and letting his eyes drag over his chest one more time for good measure. "Maybe you shouldn't have dressed like that, if you didn't want me to stare." He grins and extends a hand to shake. "I'm Emrys."
@moldboy said: “ okay, could you relax, because you’re not helping. ”
Saki gnashes his teeth at the remark, irritation prickling like a bad headache. If he weren’t so sore or so bruised, he might kick Emrys, just to watch him look stung. Instead, Saki glares at the back of Emrys’s head as the other man fiddles with a silver-doored barricade until it finally relents and gives way, clearing a path for the two of them. Emrys moves to crawl through it, but Saki catches him by the back of his shirt, fist curling into the fabric to keep Emrys in place.
He’s gnawing at his bottom lip when he admits, “I’m scared, Emrys.” Saki regrets it almost immediately, but forces himself to stomach the nauseating taste of his own vulnerability. It’s not as if Emrys will make fun of him; they’re all afraid. Hell, Emrys will probably preen at the idea of Saki trembling against him. Not that Saki trembles. No, the fear has made him angry, and not much else.
“Fine, it’s cruel of me to talk about how they… they butchered Maria or whatever,” Saki huffs, not loosening his hold on Emrys’s shirt, “but we both know what happened here. And I don’t want to end up like her.”
Saki is never vulnerable. Not with anyone, and certainly not with him. And yet, crouched in the dirt, Saki is open in a way Emrys never expected from him. He wishes they weren't in a life or death situation and he didn't have to move on from the moment, but the best he can do is lean back on his heels and take a good look at Saki, trying to best decide how to comfort him.
It's costing Saki something, Emrys realizes, to be this honest. He shouldn't squander this. He bites down on the rush of delight he feels; Saki trusts him enough to be vulnerable. "If they corner us, leave me. If you can see a way out take it." Saki wouldn't offer to die for him, he's not stupid enough to think that, but he does think Saki might feel a little bad about it later. Maybe.
He's scared too, but he doesn't want to admit it, not when Saki's relying on him. He'll do whatever he needs to do to get him out of here alive.
Emrys turns and reaches out to cup Saki's cheek in his hand, gently rubbing his thumb over Saki's cheekbone. "Hey. You won't end up like her. If nothing else, I'll make sure you get out of here." It's a foolish promise to make, but he means it.
the thing abt ana in any kind of evil au is that if maria was alive she would do anything
@edensflower: “ how mad at me are you? ” for emrys
Emrys frowns. Saki looks relatively unscathed, all things considered. He's bleeding from a shallow cut on his shoulder, but he's alive, and it doesn't seem to be causing him too much pain. "What do I have to be mad at you about?" They're both alive, and that's what matters. Those freaks, whoever they are, didn't get them, and they just have to get back to the others and warn them.
He glances back over his shoulder, making sure that they're well and truly alone, then turns back to Saki. "I'm just glad you're alright. You're not hurt, are you?" He doesn't want to fuss over Saki too much, but he doesn't know what he'd do if anything happened to him. They're not together, or anything, but Saki is important to him, or something like that.
"It was smart to send them after me. I can take a hit better than you can, I think."

“ okay, miss priss, cut that out. ”
worst thing about joining the family is u have to take care of grandpa and cant stab him anymore
@lifesver: you need to shut up now. / for emrys??? me immediately: what if the boys were fighting
The thing about Leland is he always picks the worst time to pick a fight. They're good friends, and yet Emrys has punched the guy in the face at least half a dozen times. It's all good; that's just how it is. Generally there isn't any heat behind any of their fighting.
Right now, Emrys would love nothing more than to just really lay into someone. The basement they're in is dingy and dark, and the buzz of a chainsaw can be heard in the distance. Emrys steps forward, chest to chest with Leland. "Or what? You gonna tell on me to one of these freaks? Maria's fucked, and if she was stupid enough to get caught that's not our problem anymore."
He regrets it pretty much as soon as he says it, but he can't take it back, and if he's really honest, he won't. He needs to be angry at something, and Maria is an easy target.
also i want to plot! feel free to DM me or if you want my discord ill give it out idgaf anymore! mostly interested in ana plots, but also emrys (oc) tcm stuff is very very welcome :3
@edensflower: "you need to shut up now." for emrys
Saki is pissing him off. Sure, Maria's probably dead, and sure it's probably stupid that they're out here in the first place, but her little sister has big round eyes that remind him of Ariadne's, and it's not like they could really say no to her. "Come on," Emrys snaps. "You're the one being the asshole."
Yes, they're not in the best spot to be having this argument -- that freak with the chainsaw ran by a few minutes ago -- but still, that doesn't mean Saki can talk as much shit about Maria as he wants. Now is hardly the time.
"We can argue about this later, but shouldn't we worry about the situation we're in first? We can talk about how you hate friendship and think this was stupid later." He can't believe Saki is so inconsiderate. He's the one being the asshole, and yet Emrys is the one that has to shut up? How the hell is that fair?

ana was much stronger than him, if she really didn't care what anyone thought.
❝ i... thought someone would. ❞ he feels a little stupid in saying it ― as though it were some naïve, childish wish. but time and time again, it had seemed like no one cared to take the time on them, or on ana, or on the flores family at all. no matter how much they had begged the police to go look for that old farmhouse themselves. no matter how many testimonies ranged across them. he could never bring himself to regret trying to find maria ― never. but what had any of it amounted to? scars, night terrors, and his friends, drifting away one at a time. it didn't feel like closure. it didn't feel like anything.
― but it's a guilty thought process to have in front of ana, of all people, isn't it?
leland exhales, low, a little frustrated; ❝ ― it's just... isolating, you know? ❞ leland's gaze skates past her, to the door, all its bolts and latches. the way this boxy apartment was as much a cage as a safehouse. he understood ― some days it was a lot easier to hide away. part of him still felt responsible for looking out for her ― for maria's little sister ― long after they stumbled off that god-forsaken property.
he tries not to wince as ana brings her name to the forefront ― almost afraid of summoning a ghost between them right there in the kitchen. he wonders if maria would be disappointed in them. they had all put their lives at risk, and they couldn't even bring her home.
leland shifts on his heels, brows knit in his uncertainty. ❝ are we supposed to pretend it didn't happen? is that what everyone wants? ❞ will that stop the looks? he doubts it. how could it? when he wears that place all over him ― when he would never be able to hide the places the knives carved. and how could ana escape the pity in people's eyes, who only knew her sister's name from the papers, from the radio. were they just meant to live with something ugly buried in them, that no one else could stand to look at?
leland stares past ana for a long moment, lost somewhere in his own tailspun thoughts.
blinks, frowns softly; ❝ ... no, you're right. ❞ he begins, dragging distracted hand through his hair. his tired, apologetic eyes find to the will to return to hers; ❝ none of that shit matters ― i just.... i wanted you to know, you're not alone in this, ana. or, you don't have to be, i guess. ❞
Ana learned long before they left to find Maria that no one would believe her. If she's being honest, she's surprised the others thought anyone would believe them at all. No one but her will look out for her family. She shrugs, a small, sad smile on her face. "Why would they? No one wants horror movies to be real, not really."
It's sweet, how Leland keeps tabs on her. Did he look out for Maria in the same way? She can imagine them at a college party, before everything went to hell, Leland making sure she didn't drink too much and got home safe. "I know I'm not alone." Ana musters up a smile from the depths of her body, praying she doesn't look as exhausted as she feels.
"Despite, everything, I would do it again. I can't imagine not knowing." She bites her lip and tucks her hair behind her ears. "I know that's selfish." Now she's the one who avoids his gaze, lost in thoughts of a world where she never went to find her missing sister. "Do you regret it?"
i think in a universe where they find maria's body and escape, ana holds a funeral and invites everyone and they bury an empty casket
