In Your Hands; a study in hands in NANA
So I’ve seen a lot of photo sets of Nana and Hachi holding hands, and it got me interested in how hands really characterize the relationships in the series.
I’m going to start with Hachi and Nana’s hands, as our two protagonists:
Their relationship as roommates is started with a handshake, and from then on they became increasingly physically affectionate with each other, though many of their in-story hand holding is as a means of comfort but more than a few colored illustrations have them holding each other’s hand affectionately.
After Hachi’s confrontation with Shoji and Sachiko, Nana takes her by the hand and leads her home and they sleep in the same bed that night. Just a few chapters later, Hachi holds Nana’s hands while they watch the Trapnest concert, and it is the first time Nana has seen Ren since they separated.
