Someone’s phone is ringing, a cheerful and upbeat song. They’re slow to answer, the distant jingle seems to be growing closer along with a pair of hurried footsteps. He could hear the conversation between the phones owner and the person on the opposite side of the receiver and although muffled, he could make out the gist of it.

The door abruptly opens, revealing Montana sprawled out onto the couch as he usually did during their sessions. His eyes remained closed as he tried to ignore the incoming question that his therapist shot at him.

“Mr. Max, I know you can hear me and instead of me trying to pry something out of you I’ll just jump right in. After all I know how much you hate my nagging, as you call it.”

Dr. Valkon was in her late fifties and always smelled of peppermint. Even with his eyes closed he could already visualize what she looked like in this exact moment. A crisp blouse accompanied by a pair of dark colored slacks and her legs were crossed at the ankle, left over right. After years of spending two days a week, fifty minutes each in her presence he learned that she didn’t believe in changes. Well at least not with in herself.

“Well Montana, your parents called me and have informed me that you aren’t taking your medications again. Do you want to tell me what’s going on with that?”

He immediately nodded his head ‘no’. Not only out of habit but because he truly didn’t want to talk today. They never really talk about anything substantial, it’s just his parents’ way of making sure that he’s doing okay. Today was different, he didn’t care to listen to the long drawn out lecture that was in store , so with swift movements he gathered his things and headed towards the door.

“Montana you can’t leave!”

Her words spewed out instantly as she rose to her feet. Her voice was shaky as she started to take steps toward him.

“I know you haven’t taken your medications in a few days and your parents have asked me to keep you on 48 hour hold. Just for a review.”

With his left hand planted onto the door, a scoff followed by a dry chortle escaped his lips while he slowly glanced over his shoulder. “I’m fine, none if this is necessary.”

A small hand laid gently on his shoulder and Dr. Volkan leaned in to quietly whisper into Montana’s ear.

Yes, way too many too count. Two complete sleeves, one in black and grey, the other in color. A completed back piece, a chest piece, one tattoo on the ribs, another on the knee and one on his calf. And a one he got on a dare in his inner lip.

None.

He dresses according to the weather, his mood, and the occasion.

He’s very stubborn, once his mind is made it’s almost impossible to persuade him to change it or to reason with him.

As cliche as it may sound his one main fear is failure and temporary success.

He rarely drifts away from a routine but in his spare time he enjoys anything that would increase his athletic abilities. He also enjoys traveling and swimming.
