“You can go to bed whenever you want.” Nanako said, her voice as flat as it was when they had first met what felt like a life time ago.”It’s only 6, and I want to watch cartoons until bed time.”
She seemed to have no give in her voice, like this wasn’t something she was willing to negotiate on.
“Your room is upstairs, you can go to bed there.”
“Oh? Well, well, I’m terribly sorry.” He replied sarcastically and shook his head, looking at the girl as he shrugged his shoulders. “I forgot you’re a big girl now. Though, my belief is that watching too much TV will rot your little brain, do whatever you want. It doesn’t concern me.”
Her tone of voice had changed dramatically, no doubt because he was a big influence on her. Standing up, he added, “Good night, Nanako.” and left for his room where he attempted to sleep all night, but couldn’t. Nightmares of Adachi betraying him haunted him and he woke up feeling like trash. He cursed himself mentally and went to the bathroom before slowly going downstairs. Had Dojima returned yet?

The coldness of Yu seemed to finally reach Nanako, and her bubbly joy simmered to nothing, as she turned her attention back to the TV. She just shakes her head, keeping back her tears, much like she did with Dojima. She didnt want to be yelled at, which she felt like Narukami might do.
“I’ll eat later, Im not hungry anymore.” She said, not looking at him. “But if youre hungry you can go out, dad probably wont come home tonight..again.”
She changed the channel again, trying to find something cheerful to watch, to boost the mood.
“I’ll probably go to bed early, so make yourself comfortable…”
Closing the fridge’s door, he dismissed the fact that she looked like she was about to cry and examined the kitchen area for anything that’s edible, but luck wasn’t on his side today. Pitiful, really. How did the two of them live in this place anyway? How did he become comfortable here?
He eventually gave up and sat down at the table, fingers drumming impatiently on the table as he listened to her meek, obviously scared voice. He’d never been this rude to her, so of course, it’s no surprise. “No, I don’t think I will. The shops don’t have any more customers because of the fog, so there’s no point in wasting my time.”
Narukami threw a quick glance at the TV and found it disappointing she was still glued to it. She’s lucky she’s still a preschooler and not an adult like himself. “Good little girls like you should sleep early. Now, go. I’d like to get some shut-eye myself soon.”

“…tch. As odd as it seems you’re as bad as me in talking with other people about sore spots.” He huffed and mentioned how it was precisely like that and how that work had driven her insane, without her most likely realizing that. The aftermath was this: a runaway son and remaining daughter. Gladion was sure how they both knew the pain yet were reluctant to talk about it in more detail, which he didn’t complain about at all. He’d rather try to deal with this later and get a proper job instead of sales clerk at Junes after graduation.
He mentioned how that did sound risky but he was known for not really following the rules here and didn’t really have any big plans to actually stay here. The only thing he wished he to was to finish his studies here and apply for an university of his choice in somewhere else. “A ghost town wasn’t in my plans at all when running away or changing schools in a whim. How on Earth are you here as well, if you claim it’s insane?”
“Hmph. I’ll take that as a compliment. I’m an introvert, thus, I never speak to people if they don’t initiate a conversation first.” He stuffed a hand in his pocket and looked at the blond teenager. Admittedly, deep inside, he was a bit curious to learn more about his family situation. That is, if he was his old self and didn’t fall into that man’s trap. Now he was forced to live in paranoia, but enough about that for now.
He raised a brow. He expected that question, of course. “How? Well, let’s say I’ve taken a liking to this town than when I first got here.” Looking up at the foggy sky, he let out a sigh. “Long story short, it’s quiet here. I like it. I do have a very important reason for being here, but that’s one of my many secrets. Name’s Souji Narukami.” He figured he might as well introduce himself since the other looked just as stubborn as him.

“I told you not to get too close to me.” “From the day we met, I knew I’d hurt you eventually.” “I wish you never had trusted me.” “I told you to leave, but you didn’t. I gave you the chance!” “We were never friends. I’m so sorry.” “I did something terrible.” “It was inevitable, but I regretted it every step of the way.” “I’m mainly sorry that somewhere along the way, I started to care about you.” “I guess this is a lesson in not trusting people, right?” “How long?…Since the beginning.” “I wish I could just make a wish and become a better person.” “None if it was real, but I wish it was.” “Do you think I liked hurting you?” “I hurt people. It’s all I’m good at.” “I did it because I had to, not because I ever wanted to.” “I -did- care about you, I just had no other choice.” “You should have walked away when you had the chance.” “If we had never met, it would have saved us both some grief.” “I know it hurts, but I’m still glad we had the chance to know each other.” “Hurting you was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.” “I didn’t want it to be like this, but I had no control!” “I guess I’ve just never been a trustworthy person.” “I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t want to forgive me either.” “So? Aren’t you going to say something?” “If I tell you what I did, we’ll probably never see one another again.”
“When were you going to tell me about this?” “Why me? Of all people, why me?” “You planned this all from the beginning?” “I wanted so badly to think you were different.” “How could you lead me along like that?” “None of what we had was ever real, was it?” “So, our friendship didn’t mean anything to you?” “I would have done anything for you, but you’ve ruined all of that.” “All of the things I sacrificed for you didn’t mean a thing?” “I wish I had known when we met that you were such a vile person.” “If I could go back, I would just walk away.” “I forgive you, but I’m not going to forget what you did.” “No. I don’t accept your apology.” “After all your lies, how do I know you mean it when you say you’re sorry?” “I hope you realized what you did was cruel.” “I still care about you.” “Just tell me that your feelings towards me were genuine.” “What on earth is worth betraying someone who loves you?” “If you want to regain my trust, you have to earn it.” “Don’t just say you’re sorry. Show me that you’re sorry.”

“Dad is always busy…” She comments sadly, but by then Narukami had gone upstairs. So Nanako set herself back up to watch TV. Like she always did.
She was happy her Onii-chan was back, but something about him didnt feel the same. He felt…colder? He wouldnt even smile at her.
Nanako sighs softly, changing the channel to some cartoon she enjoyed, waiting for Yu to return to the downstairs. When he did, she turned and smiled at him.
“Uh-huh!” She smiles widely, answering his question. “Ive done all my chores! And Im getting really good grades! I bet Dad would be proud of me…if he knew. But he’s so busy with work again…But you’re proud of me, right big bro?”
For a moment her tone wavered to that of sadness, but when she directed her question of pride at Yu, it returned to an upbeat happy tone once more.
“My teacher says I might be in the top three of my class this year!”
Souji looked at her, tilting his head at her question as he rested on the sofa. After a long silence filled the room, he spoke, “If you’re good, then yes, I am. I’m sure Dojima-san would say the same.” That came out colder than he anticipated, and he would apologize if it wasn’t true. Overall, he hated rowdy children.
A sigh left his lips as he turned his attention to his watch- 5 PM, in other words, dinner time. “Looks like it’s dinner time. I hope your dad bought something, otherwise... you won’t eat anything at all.”
He spoke as he got up to check for food inside the fridge-- anything that would feed him and his cousin. “Hm... microwaved dinner... you eat this rubbish? Please tell me you actually have something edible in this hellhole.” Turning to gaze at her with a frown upon his lips over his shoulder, he shook his head. “I’m too tired to cook for you if that’s what you’re thinking.”
Merry Christmas Eve
lovers-choker:
Well, at the very least, he didn’t have a place to go. A little sad, considering tonight was Christmas Eve, so he should have a place to come back to, right? He was buying medicine… Then again, he could be by himself and all.
“I was just trying to be friendly, I guess… It felt like the natural question.” She could be wrong, of course. He could always be just wandering, for no reason other than… just that. There wasn’t much to do with the fog still up. “I’m headed home, but rest assured, I don’t mind nor care about your reasons.”
She shrugged, seriously, because she wasn’t really interested in getting to know the guy, and she was sure he felt the same way. “I’m not interesting either.”
He let out a sigh he had been holding in for a while. “Of course you were. Everyone here is kind and love gossiping about anything and anyone behind their backs.” He clicked his tongue, mainly out of habit and wondered if any of the survivors had any interesting tales besides the usual ‘We’re going to die’ attitude. Not that he cared. “The only good thing about this town is that it’s eerily quiet, unlike my hometown.”
Her response was expected and he nodded firmly. “Glad we agree on this, then. Naturally, the people who claim that means that they’re lying through their teeth. We’re all interesting in one way or another. But I’d rather do things my own way. I never was good with people as you can tell.”
justiceinnocence:
Things had returned relatively back to normal for Nanako-chan. Though she was sad that her big bro had left without a word, she set herself back to doing the domestic tasks while her father worked himself into an early grave.
“Huh..we aren’t expecting visitors?” Nanako hums, hearing the door bell ring. The now 9 year old was cautious, of course. But she heard her Onii-chan’s voice, and she couldn’t help but throw the door open.
“Big bro!” She said excitedly, immediately throwing herself to hug Souji. “You came back! We weren’t expecting you.”
He breathed in and braced himself for the worst when Nanako jumped on him, causing him to stumble back a bit. “Thanks.” He patted her head while thinking of a good excuse to explain his surprise visit. “I... like Inaba a lot more than Tokyo, so I came back.” He spoke, not a smile visible on his face as he stepped inside the house and looked around for his uncle.
“Oh, your father is busy again, I see...” Good, he thought if he was here he’d ask all sorts of questions in regards to what happened last year and why any conclusive evidence couldn’t be found. “I’m gonna go unpack my stuff and I’ll be back, okay?”
He told her and without waiting for an answer, went up the stairs and into his room to do so. While also contemplating everything, his head was a mess. Taking out the lighter he got from his partner in crime out of his pocket, he sighed while clutching it into his hand. “Dammit,” Narukami muttered under his breath and soon put it back, climbing down the stairs into the living room. “Have you been a good girl while I was gone?”
