Some people think that being a fan of a band is to love everything they put out with a passion and do it until we die. But itâs not.
The fans have their own personal taste in music that may or may not clash with some of the bandâs creative choices at times.
What makes us fans and good ones is the fact that we, despite not appreciating some of the bandâs creative work due to differences in artistic taste, respect them and their musical journey nonetheless.
We donât go around bashing their work. We donât go around saying itâs horrible and that it sucks. We donât go around bombarding the artists with mean messages. We simply state that itâs not our own musical preference and move on.
Not liking something is not the same thing as being mean towards it.
I donât like screamo music therefore I simply say that I donât like it and move on with my life continuing not liking it and listening to my prefered music instead. It also doesnât mean that if one day my favourite band collaborates with a screamo artist Iâm gonna hate that song and say that itâs trash because I donât like it because I know that a songâs status as trash isnât measured by me liking it or not.
If your favourite band is trying to branch out and is searching for its own voice and adventuring itself in a new genre, let them. Let them explore, let them make mistakes, let them learn.
If you like their new stuff, great! Share the love!
If you donât like it, say you donât like it, and if you feel the need to say why, do it politely and respectfully, and then move on. Do everyone a favour and donât share the hate. Keep it to yourself!
Everyone has their own taste in music. We have that right. We simply shouldnât to be shitty fans and shitty human beings by spreading negativity around.
