He doesn’t deny it. Instead, he steps forward and looks down at her, not with superiority, but with a kind of quiet weighing. The same gaze he has turned on empty roads and wounded plains.

“I knew they would send only couriers,” she replies. “Not family. Not risk. I didn’t want your first sight of this court to be a wall of masks.”

Her voice is softer now. “And me? What do you see?”

He looks back at her, fully this time.

“I see someone who still listens to the wind.”

Her throat tightens, just slightly. “And is that worth keeping?”

“Does she imagine she can seize power with that?”

“She’s a rider, not a diplomat. She doesn’t understand the stakes.”

They all pretend not to notice how quiet Yìchén has become once the Khagan disappeared behind those inner walls with his sister. Or how still the chamber had gone when the great warriors beside him, those massive, armored Keshig, had stood like silver statues, wordless but watching. None would say it aloud, but unease now creeps through even the boldest tongues. Because the Khagan had not come in gold and thunder. He had come in silence.

“I’ve decided not to be.”

“And you,” Yìchén says, finally looking up, “always did like calling out both.”

The corner of Zhenran’s mouth curls, faintly.

Yìchén sets down the teapot. “He asked for her by name. No overtures. No bargaining. No talk of trade routes or alliance terms. Just her.”

Zhenran paused, fingers resting lightly on the polished spine of the blade. “So, either he saw through everything we staged, or he doesn’t give a damn.”

“Or both,” Yìchén agrees.

Silence settles between them.

“She’s not a fool,” Yìchén says quietly. “But she listens to things we don’t always measure. Wind. Silence. Honor. Her own blood.”

“…and your disapproval?” Zhenran asks without venom.

“I said nothing of disapproval,” Yìchén replies. “Only unpredictability.”

Zhenran turns the blade once in his hand. “You worry.”

“I prepare,” Yìchén says, flatly. “She’s still your twin, and she’s still herself. You know better than anyone how far she’ll go when her mind is set.”

“Do we stop her?” Zhenran asks.

“No,” Yìchén says, after a long moment. “But we make ready for what this means. For her. For the court. For us.”

Moving side by side across the high plain, though not closely. A breath of wind, a stretch of open air, always lingers between them like a held question neither is quite ready to ask. She rides a lean, sinewed beast that pads nearly silent over the grass. Feline in frame and movement, it walks with the elegance of something both predator and companion, muscles coiled beneath short brindled fur, its long tail swaying in counterbalance. No reins. No bridle. It needed none. Her fingers barely brush it’s withers, steering with subtle shifts of weight and whisper-clicks from her tongue.

The Khan walks beside her, his stride as long and sure as any mount. He moves like one born to motion, each step purposeful but never hurried. His gaze roams the horizon, not just reading the land, but tasting it, as if every line of wind and sun told him a story.

The guards, hers, trailing discreetly behind, distant silhouettes cresting the low rise. They don’t call or signal, only watch. Trusted. Jaghatai doesn’t glance at them, nor at her mount.  She studies him in profile. The breadth of shoulder, the weather-hardened face. Yet he bears no crown, no banners. The warlord the court had dreaded had arrived without even a rider’s herald. He speaks before she can.

“Your beast walks like it knows where it’s going.”

“It does,” she replies. “I trust her more than any map.”

“She doesn’t fear me.”

“She would if I did.”

That earns a flicker of something in his expression. Not amusement, but maybe curiosity. His hands remain relaxed at his sides, though he seems like a man who could kill with them even if he didn’t reach for a blade. Cresting a ridge, and the wind meets them clean and sharp. The city glitters faintly in the valley ahead, its painted stone roofs pale in the morning sun, a hundred flags unmoving without a breeze. Shifting slightly in her saddle.

“My brothers will not like this.”

“Which part?” Jaghatai asks.

“That I met you first. That I came without escort. That I didn’t bring the proper incense or petitions.” A pause. “That I speak plainly.”

“Then your brother values form over truth.”

“He values survival. As do I.”

Looking at her now. As if testing whether her eyes will hold.

“And do you survive by sending others to kneel?”

“No. I survive by understanding who I’m speaking to.”

“And what do you understand of me?”

“Enough to know,” she says, “you’re not what the court feared.”

“What did they fear?”

“A hungry storm with polished teeth. A sword wearing a man’s shape.”

“And you?”

She doesn’t answer right away. Her mount flicks an ear back, listening, but remaining calm.

“I think you’re not hungry at all,” she says. “You’re already fed. You’ve seen too much to choose that as your first course of action.”

Jaghatai’s eyes narrow, not in threat, but as if he’s just heard something more honest than expected.

She gives a slight smile, then turns her eyes forward again. “And if met with a closed one?”

“Then another way will be found,” the Khan says.

Stones mark the boundary between wild and cultivated land, flat slate slabs inlaid with silver script, half-sunken in earth and moss. Beyond them stands the outer walls of the capital, a fortress of tiered white stone and crimson-tiled roofs that shimmer in the high sun.

The road curves upward in a slow, ceremonial incline. At its peak stands the main gate: vast, arching, and carved with the twin serpents of the Shen family. Banners streaming from its towers, red and gold and ink-black silk fluttering in the breeze, each bearing the crest of a noble house or military division. Beneath them, an army of formalities awaits.

Trumpeters in silver and vermilion livery line the steps. A full honor guard flanks the approach, sun-forged lamellar armor catching the light in a hundred refracted glares. Ministers in layered robes stand in precise, color-ranked formation. At the center, high on the platform beneath the gate’s shadow, is the High Chancellor’s court.

Shen Yìchén stands tall in dark robes, his hands clasped before him. His face is unreadable. Zhenran, her twin, stands just behind, his gaze flicking sharply between his sister and the distant figure beside her. The air buzzes with a hush heavier than any battle.

Guiding her mount with steady ease, robes rippling like a war banner as they rise the final slope. Jaghatai walks beside her, no less regal for his simplicity, no throne, no grand chariot. Only the wind in his hair and the dust of travel on his cloak. Behind him comes the Keshig, his elite. Warriors of immense stature, clad in armor of bone-white plate. As they reach the platform, the trumpets ring out.

The formal voice of the herald echoes across the stones, “Announcing the arrival of the Great Khan of the White Scars, Primarch, commander, and emissary of the Imperium of Man.”

Every official before them drops to their knees. Except the third young mistress. She swings down from her beast with practiced grace, her gaze sweeping the court without apology. Then, finally, she kneels, low and composed, her voice clear, “I return, bearing the storm.”

Behind her, Jaghatai Khan inclines his head, not to the court, but to her.

Petals drift down from the upper balconies, white plum blossoms dyed red at their edges, a symbol of peace, or perhaps of blood well spilled. A choir begins to sing, voices high and clear in a tongue even the oldest courtiers scarcely remembered, intoning praise to gods no longer worshipped and High Chancellors long entombed.

Jaghatai walks beneath it all like he belonged nowhere in it. He neither slows nor nods to the receiving hosts. His eyes flicker upward once, toward the towers, where snipers watch from behind shadowed screens. Then down again. Unimpressed. The Keshig march in his wake, utterly silent. They move like ghosts through a dream, present, yet somehow untouched by the weight of ceremony.

The court notices. Whispers spread like fire in dry grass. Some remark on his height, others on his silence. Some question why no formal gifts were brought, no tribute displayed. Others, those with sharper eyes, notice the Keshig’s weapons are live. Not peace bound. Not symbolically dulled. They bear real edges and live rounds. This isn’t a diplomat’s procession. This is a warlord entering his inheritance. Shen Yìchén has descended the stairs by then, arms spread in ritual welcome. His voice is smooth and practiced as he intones the prepared greetings.

Zhenran’s jaw tightens. A herald steps forward uncertainly, looking between them, unsure whether to resume the litany or retreat. Jaghatai looks past them all.

“To speak plain,” he says, now louder, “I will address the one who came to meet me on the road. Not the ones who waited behind walls.”

 Unflinching beneath the sudden weight of attention, she steps forward, chin high, the wind teasing strands of hair from her braids. “I am here,” she says. “If my lords permit it.”

A silence follows, too long. Every eye turns to Yìchén. He pauses for a moment longer than is proper but then smiles and gestures with one elegant hand.

“The court permits. Let it be known that the honored guest wishes private counsel before formal rites. The ceremonies will wait.”

The herald stumbles to adjust his scroll, voice ringing with carefully composed neutrality. “Let it be entered into record that the Warlord-Khan of the Fifth declines initial ritual greeting in favor of direct parley.”

It is a slight, and everyone knows it. None dare object, not yet. Not with the Keshig present. Not with the Khan himself standing tall and very, very still, his eyes sharp beneath the wind-tossed strands of his hair. She turns then and leads the way, not through the main audience chamber, but down a narrower side passage, its walls carved with depictions of winged-lions and galloping beasts. Jaghatai following suit.

               In slow waves the tall grass brushes against them, each step parting it like water. Wind chases in long sighs across the plain, catching at the hem of her cloak, tugging at the loose threads of Jaghatai’s fur-lined mantle. Behind them, her mount plods in steady rhythm, and far to the rear, the Keshig keeps a respectful distance, their white armor dulled by the dust of the land. No words are shared in the first leg of their journey. It is a silence not of discomfort, but of intention.

“You do not walk like a court-born,” she says at last, breaking the quiet without glancing over. “Most nobles cannot tolerate ten paces without shade.”

“I was not raised in palaces,” he replies. “And I have little use for shade.”

“And yet you walk to it.”

A faint smile crosses his features. “Not all shadows are refusals. Some are invitations.”

That earns a small tilt of her head, not quite approval, but not dismissal either.

“The plains are quiet today,” she says, after a time. “I thought the land might resist you more.”

“It still might,” Jaghatai says. “Not all things strike at first sight.”

His gaze shifts to the horizon. The city, distant and glasslike in the heat shimmer, looming faintly, towers layered like a fan of blades, half-concealed in mist.

“You could have flown there,” she says, voice unreadable. “Landed in the sky-courts. Claimed courtesy. Imposed pressure. That is what the Imperium does, isn’t it?”

“Is that what they taught you?”

“They taught us many things. We remember most of them.”

“Then perhaps I came to see if your memory matches your truth.”

She glances sideways at him then, studying his face, not the scars, not the gold trim of his armor—but the eyes. Dark and sharp, reflecting the sky more than the ground.

“And?” she asks. “What does your rider’s wisdom tell you of us now?”

He is silent for a moment, then answers without looking at her.

“You are people who build high and think low. Who speak always of duty and yet walk with knives in your sleeves. But you have not bowed. Not once. Not even here. That speaks for more than bloodlines.”

“Bowing is only meaningful if it’s not a performance,” she says softly. “And I was never taught to kneel without cause.”

He gives her a look, small, searching. Something passing between them. Not warmth. Not trust. But a mutual respect born of wariness and restraint.

“That,” he replies, “is why I’m still walking.”

A hawk cries above them, the grass hissing as the wind shifted again. Narrowing her eyes at the distant road, the long red strip that runs like a scar toward the city gates.

“When we reach the threshold,” she says, “they will insist on protocol. Titles. Chants. Ceremonial blades and incense. You will be paraded and questioned and given gifts that carry obligations.”

“Then you’ll understand why I came to meet you here.”

He chuckles—a dry, low sound. “Too late for that, I think.”

At the far end of the chamber, Shen Yìchén stands with his back to the assembly, gazing through the open latticework that overlooks the city and plains beyond. His robes are severe but elegant, sable and bronze. His hands are folded behind his back. He doesn’t react as the court agent approaches from the stairwell behind him, breath short, bow low.

“The Third Mistress,” the man says quietly, “has left the palace. She has taken her mount and the Silent Vow ride with her.”

“Did she wear a house crest?”

“No, my lord.”

“Did she seek the Chancellor’s blessing?”

“No.”

“Good,” Yìchén replies, still watching the distant line of the red road as it shimmers in the heat.

The court rustles. Courtiers leaned in behind silk fans, their curiosity now sharpened with alarm. One of the younger ministers clears his throat delicately.

“My lord Shen… should we dispatch a rider to call her back?”

“No.”

“But, if she speaks out of turn, or offends the guest—”

“She won’t,” Yìchén says, turning at last. “She knew exactly what she was doing.”

He lets that settle in the room like dust over water. The gathered ministers blink.

“Then… you allowed this?” someone dares to ask.

“I anticipated it,” Yìchén corrects. “She would have gone with or without my consent. Better she ride unshackled by court pretense than stumble beneath it.”

A heavy silence follows. Near the Chancellor’s raised platform, the old man sits unmoving. The wind lifting a strand of his silver hair.

“She has placed herself in the path of a warlord,” one of the officials mutters. “Does she think to parley alone?”

Yìchén gives a thin, unreadable smile.

“No. She doesn’t think to parley at all. She thinks to see. Before anyone else buries him in protocol.”

Behind the Chancellor, two ministers whisper sharply.

“She’s rash—”

“She’s calculating.”

“She’s his twin, after all—”

“No, she’s not. That’s Zhenran. She’s the third. The wild one.”

“Even worse.”

“No,” the Chancellor says suddenly, voice faint but firm. “She is the one who listens to the wind.”

All eyes turn toward him. He hadn’t spoken since dawn. The map of the southern provinces still lays before him, and now his hand, thin-boned and pale, rests gently over the tile marked KHORIN.

“Let her meet the Khan,” he says. “Let him meet something this court cannot imitate.”

Yìchén gives the faintest nod. He has played his piece, and the court has accepted it. For now. Let her be the first to stand before the storm. He will be the one to shape its direction.

And the out of place thump of hurried paws. Paws that had departed too fast. He didn’t need a report. He knows the rhythm of his sister’s mount like the beat of his own pulse. A servant approaches but pauses as Zhenran raises a hand without turning.

“She has already gone,” he says, his voice soft but certain.

“Yes, my lord,” the servant responds after a moment. “The Chancellor has permitted it. Lord Yìchén… supports the decision.”

Zhenran says nothing for a long time. He is dressed without ornament, his tunic bound high at the collar, a single thread of copper tracing the shoulder seam. His black hair is tied low, half pulled loose by the wind.

“She didn’t wear house colors,” he murmurs. “She went as herself.”

“Should I prepare a message for her return?” the servant hesitantly asks.

“No. She won’t return for words.”

His fingers drift along the incense dragon’s spine. The stone is warm in the sun, rough with age. A gift, once, from their mother’s people. Zhenran had sat here often, and so had his twin, though she’d always stood on the bench instead, to look beyond the wall.

She always moved first, he thought. Even when we were children, she met storms face-forward. But I feel the thunder in my bones first.

Turning at last, his expression unreadable.

“Prepare my weapons,” he says.

“You’re leaving the city?” the servant asks, startled.

“No,” Zhenran says. “I’m remaining exactly where I need to be.”

Stepping down from the garden stones and vanishes into the misted corridor, leaving only the incense curling behind him, smoke rising like memory.

               Night had yet to fall, but the grasslands have begun to shift from gold to iron. The White Scars make camp where a shallow ridge overlooks a fork in the river, its waters catching skylight in flickering ribbons. The Keshig move with quiet efficiency, unpacking only what is needed, their banners furled, weapons set close, the perimeter marked with unseen sensors rather than torches. They are warriors bred for the void, hardened across ten thousand battlefields. Yet even they seem... subdued. The plains demanded it.

“This place,” says Togai, one of the older Keshig, as he sets down a curved bone charm near the firepit, “it listens.”

“You mean it’s quiet,” mutteres Naruq, the youngest, rubbing his gauntlets clean. “I don’t like it. Even the animals don’t make proper noise. Like everything’s waiting.”

“They are,” says Qulan. “They watch us same as we watch them. It’s just not through windows.”

He glances toward the darkening hills.

“These people,” he adds, “they understand presence. Ceremony. But not submission. That girl—”

“The Third Mistress,” Togai corrects.

“Yes. Her. She walks like she was born knowing a blade would never be far from her hand.”

“So does the Khan,” Naruq mutters.

The others chuckle softly. Far from the firelight, Jaghatai stands on the rise alone, staring toward the faint lights of the city in the distance. His long shadow falls across the grass, wind pulling at his cloak.

“You think he trusts her?” Naruq asks.

“He doesn’t need to trust her,” Togai says, pouring tea into an iron cup. “He needs to understand her. That is how he sees the world, like a map of rival rivers. All you must know is which one will flood, and which will hold the bridge.”

“And which to ride,” Qulan adds.

They fall silent as the wind shifts. Above, the moons are beginning to rise, twin slivers of pearl light, casting long shadows through the swaying stalks.

“They say this world refused Imperial banners three times before,” Naruq says, quieter now. “Sent back envoys bloodied, but alive.”

“And now?” Qulan asks.

Togai passes the tea. His voice is dry.

A low hum fills the air as the Khan’s ship descends upon the vast grasslands, the engines cast waves through the tall stalks. A faint hiss of pressurized air marks the opening of the ramp. Out steps Jaghatai, flanked by his Keshig. Scanning the immense field ahead, running a hand through the tall stalks as he assesses the terrain.

               “Scans course their main city northward, khan”, one of his honor guard says behind him. “Shall we unload the hoverbikes?”

               “Leave them, we shall walk.” Jaghatai says to his gene-sons, already treading through the sea of grass.

Quick to follow their primarch, a swift signal is cast skyward, and the gunship’s ramp seals with a sigh. Engines thrumming once more, and the vessel lifts, vanishing into the clouds above.

These strangers’ arrival has set the city into a whirlwind. Behind silk screens and polished jade corridors, the court has begun to stir like a disturbed hive. Arguing amongst each other on how to deal with these outworlders and who they should send as their emissaries.

“He has not requested entry.”

“He spurns the gates of ceremony.”

“He has chosen the plains.”

“He walks.”

Even now, the courtiers gather before polished pools and incense braziers to recite old proverbs that might give shape to their unease.

He who ignores the road tramples the host. When the hunter enters through the grass, it is not as a guest, but as a god.

The High Chancellor’s expression remains unreadable as his advisors murmur around him. Beneath his gaze, a table map of the plains shifts in the breeze from the open balcony. He reaches to weigh it down with a single, thin-boned hand.

“Let him walk.”

Striding away from the railing of the balcony overlooking the throne hall, the third young mistress makes her way to the tower of solace. Stepping onto the elevator as the bottom of the platform suddenly glows an electric blue and levitates to the top. At the top the wind carries incense out through the latticed stone. Standing before a balcony half-shadowed by silk and stone lions as she pears into the mounted spyglass toward the Khorin plains.

After adjusting the lenses, she watches these grand men walking through the plains, parting the waves of long stalks like stones in a river. At the head, a man walks with deliberate calmness of a person who has marched across continents—and brought all of them to yield.

He walks like the road belongs to him, she thinks to herself.

Behind her, attendants murmur like insects around a lamp, fussing over court seating and ritual phrasing for the emissary team being assembled.

“A dozen delegates at least, should we wear the green or silver standard?”

“Will he expect a blade-baring or a wine-offering?”

“Perhaps incense. A ritual wind-cleansing, his people may be uncivilized…”

Deciding not to silence them, knowing the storm ahead will do that on its own.

“You’ll attend the formal welcome, of course, sister.”

Glancing to her side where her elder sibling, Shen Yìchén, steps beside her, the rustle of his gold-trimmed robes faint.

“You’re not on the envoy list,” he continues. “Father thought better of giving you a position of diplomacy. Not with that glaive of yours always in reach.”
