many people have already talked about this but the treatment of soldier boy vs homelander really does say so much about the boys and it's flaws as a show. sb is meant to be toxic masculinity personified and yet he's never punished for it, at least not in any way that matters. instead, he's a badass with cool one liners. even when he fails, he looks good doing it. he's everything homelander could never be. meanwhile homelander is constantly reminded how much of a loser he actually is by everyone, even sb himself. ridiculed for being too emotional and desperately craving human connection. for daring to want a relationship with his father. it's ok when sb is an asshole to his own son because it's clearly homelander's fault for believing his father could ever give a shit about him. all this makes me wonder what exactly is the message here? look at sb, he's cool. he smokes, drinks, sleeps around without a care in the world. he has no real emotional attachment to anything. everything he says and does feels effortless no matter what because he's just that cool. look at homelander, he's pathetic. he doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, doesn't really sleep around but when he does he's submissive. he's insecure, especially about his appearance. he's awkward and fucks up social interactions because he doesn't really know how to act ''normal'' around people. he's ''too stupid'' to see when he's not wanted and ''too weird/mentally ill'' to fit in anywhere. so i ask again, what's the message here? the man claiming to be a god somehow ended up being the most painfully human character in the entire show despite how hard his abusers tried to carve it out of him and yet he's relentessly mocked for it by the narrative. ironic isn't it?
