Your character doesn't need to be likeable. They need to be legible. The reader needs to understand every decision they make even when it's wrong, even when it's ugly, even when they want to shake them. Likeable is easy and forgettable. Legible is what makes someone stay with you for years. Make the logic of every bad choice visible. The reader doesn't have to agree with it. They just have to follow it.

God, Billy Butcher is just stranger and funnier the more I think about him. It's sort of morbidly fascinating. He apologised to Becca for not 'saving' her and said he'd spend the 'rest of his life making it up to her', as he was actively planning to separate her from her child he had no reason to think she didn't love, who she had lived in a compound for 8 years for, so she could be with him and be the one to raise him. He went on trying to do that, plotting with Stan Edgar, even though he and Becca had discussed it at that point and she'd made it VERY clear she wanted Ryan with her - I know he changed his mind at the end, but if he was doing everything for her it feels like it wouldn't have even come up. Or at least he might have discussed it with her, if he genuinely thought there was no other way?
"For Frenchie", when he left Frenchie to presumably die in Vought custody at the end of S1 so he could go after Homelander, and things never really improved from there. "For my Becca" when Becca begged him with her dying breath to look after her son, to not let him be treated like a weapon, and to make sure he knew her death wasn't his fault - and Billy blamed him directly for her death a season later, and spent season 5 trying to convince him to become a weapon against Homelander and die.
And I don't mind the emptiness and darkness of Butcher - even enjoy his almost-pure obsession with Homelander - but it's all so blatant I find it hard to believe it wasn't intentional, and then it's like, what story were they trying to tell? Damaged man is killed by another damaged man, who then pretty much immediately gets himself killed/destroys himself? Were we just supposed to be really impressed Billy overcame the odds and destroyed a near-invulnerable superhuman (by using other superpowers)? Was it just an excuse for five seasons of fighting? I can't even understand why you'd want to tell that story. It's not even like "it was accidental compared to his revenge, but he DID save the world, so it worked out" because the real issue was always Vought creating situations like Homelander, and they're still there at the end of the show that was specifically supposed to tell that story. I like angst and horror, so I can still kind of enjoy it, but ?????
