So I decided to step into the editing room and make one little change…

combine this with sam finding massive research on how to save cas in dean’s room/computer, implying dean simply died too soon to act upon it, and then dean not waiting around 50 years for sam but instead getting to the bridge earlier. maybe knowing from bobby cas is somewhere in heaven? having prayed to him in the car, hoping/knowing cas will hear him straight away and come back to him?

We could still have Dean and Sam reunited at the end, but with these minor changes and it would have MADE SENSE (even without Misha and Shoshannah).   

we’d have finally gotten to hear dean’s truth - the missing piece, and the closure to his emotional arc about freedom and wants. and because of the previous narrative setup, it would’ve been easy to imagine without textual explanations of cas’ absence that cas hadn’t shown up straight away because he thought dean didn’t reciprocate and that maybe it was for the best to let dean move on. that cas needed to hear dean speak it out to know he was loved and wanted, just like dean had needed it to believe he was a good person at heart and someone saw him. this would’ve been embarassingly easy to pull off.
