for 2 of the 4.5 years that i have loved mirio togata/miritama ive always had this sort of saddening feeling when it came to miritama....some notion that maybe it's one-sided or mirio doesnt love tamaki half asmuch as tamaki does..UNTIL! EURAKA! it's been right in front of my face for years. and its super duper simple: mirio just thinks that tamaki is the coolest person on the planet. through both mirio and tamakis flashbacks and his determinated upbringing hes always said the same thing: "tamaki is so cool".
i feel like the very concept of "suneater" has always been so glossed over by -- especially -- me, but its actually super duper important. mirio wholeheartedly believes that tamaki isn't just more powerful or more RADIANT than MIRIO (as the sun), but thinks hes more powerful/radiant than the sun ITSELF. i cant imagine how seriously proud mirio must feel to see tamaki overcome stomach wrenching anxiety. because its not just about feeling incredibly INCREDIBLY inspired by mirio, but presumably its grown into tamaki wanting to prove it to HIMSELF that he really lives up to that name.
tamaki seems to praise and "worship" (ehhh) mirio by giving him the title of "the sun" -- this metaphorically and physically large and impactful celestial body-- and then mirio takes that symbol, doubles it, and names tamaki "the sunEATER" because he thinks tamaki is THAT! COOL! and the best part is HES TOTALLY RIGHT! when you really think about it tamaki is in lots of ways infinitely cooler than mirio as a hero and character (physically hurt to type that), and so when you take that idea and consider thats how mirio feels about tamaki it kinda makes people like me go a little insane.
TLDR: deep down mirio has this heavy feeling about tamaki in which he thinks tamaki is the coolest person hes ever met and will ever meet. this leads to such a beautiful and heartfelt relationship whether its romantic or platonic (personally its an amalgamation of both). the sun and his good o' buddy OUHHHHHHGGG ITS SOOO GOOODODDDDD
