he gives her treats (cookies, the knife) to make her do whatever he wants. he gives her orders like when he tells her to not put her feet on the desk. and at the end of the episode, when she hesitates in the room bc she wants to get her knife back, the knife he gave her, he calls her name like you would a dog who's not being very obedient.

and faith follows, like she's his good little dog.

and listen. i think she knows she should have stayed with buffy, hell she wants the scoobies to give her another chance! it's like so clear when willow does that whole speech (which i hated btw) abt faith being worthless, faith was hoping it would be a "we're still your friends! there's still time!" speech.

but the mayor's giving her the love no one ever has. she was abused by her mother and possibly ever other adult in her life. her watcher, the only person who did care for her, was brutally murdered in front of her. she was on the run across america from one of the most powerful vamps in the world for months as a teenager. even buffy, the only person in sunnydale to give her the time of day, is still very reticent in sharing her friends and her life with faith.

idk where i'm going with this and i'm sure there's ppl out there who are smarter than me and have said it better but like. faith is the dog. she's been kicked and abused her whole life. but now here comes a guy who seems to really care for her, who treats her well, who gives her shelter and food and gifts in exchange for what, a few (violent) errands here and there? doesn't matter that it's gonna ultimately put faith in a coma for months. doesn't matter that she is in wilkins' hands as much of a pawn as she is in the council's. she's gonna help him bc "a dog's friendship is stronger than its own self-preservation."
