“  vous avez . . .  you have  ----  there are, em . . .  fires.  non, burns!  ”  one tiny hand points to the various marks on the red spacesuit, that only look like soot, and could very much be something else.  he works in space . . .  no, no.  that’s not it.  used to work in space means not anymore.  their english teacher had never praised them as much as the science and math teachers, and for good reason.  but kane is pretty sure the astronaut, max, said he doesn’t work there now.  they frown.  “  you were fired in space?  ”  what they mean was burned.  “  i am called kane.  like in alien, the film.  ”

he looks around, now, as the black spots in his vision have finally started to fade, and draws a deep breath. it’s probably not wise to keep standing in the alley in his suit. definitely not to continue engaging with past-kane – or are they present-kane and he’s just future-red? max has never really been one for the sci-fi stuff. ❝   j’avais un ami, once,   ❞ he says instead of leaving. hey, he hadn’t exactly been scouted for his rational decision making, had he. ❝   alien was one of their favourites.   ❞ belatedly, he glances down at the state of his spacesuit. ❝   ah, you wouldn’t know a place i might be able to…   ❞ he gestures to himself, ❝   get my bearings?   ❞ he means hide out, at least until he decides the best course of action.

“  bonjour,  ”  they respond, just as maman always taught, their voice small and strained with politeness, their small legs swaying with anxious, childish movement.  the hood of their ragged raincoat has fallen off, and even in the softness of their youth, the grey light alights sharp, pale features.  english, they must remember their english!  “  you are  ---- um.  ”  their face crinkles in annoyance, and they point up at the evening sky,  “  from up.  how?  ”

❝   ah, bonjour,   ❞ the adjustment to french is made and it lends to the surreality of it all. he drags his gaze upwards, dark eyes narrowing at the smattering of familiar constellations that he can spot through the clouds. so it is earth ( he'd never doubt the stars ). ❝   i used to work there,   ❞ lips twist as he tries to figure out his best course of action. if this really is the 2120's, he should probably attempt to reach out to nelson, should warn him about it all — and yet, he finds himself looking down at little kane, once more, unable to walk away like he knows he should. his heart aches with the memory of the last things he'd said to them. ( maybe he can make it right, change their fate ). he should walk away but, instead, he smiles softly and says, ❝   je m'appelle max.   ❞
