Draco didnât believe that anyoneâs intention during the war had been equality. That may be the pessimist in him, or the Slytherin in him, but equality was the kind of idealistic view that gave him headaches because it did not exist. As long as the Sacred 28 had the amount of money they had they would always influence the Ministry of Magic in ways others couldnât. And the war having ended meant someone won and someone lost, and whoever lost also lost a part of their influence whereas the winners were looked at by the entire community as good examples and what not (and how ironic that was). But the difference between the two of them was what Hermione stated that she was willing to sacrifice her life for what she believed in, whereas Draco definitely was not. He spent the entirety of the war making sure his parents lived (and wondering if life was worth living when it was like this) whereas Hermione seemed to have spent the entirety of the war making sure there were ideals worth to fight for.  With that, and everything else, in mind anyone seeing them would say that they were too different and that they would never make anything between them work. But for some strange reason, since thinking that was common sense and logic, Draco couldnât find himself agreeing. They were adults now. They knew better than to argue and bicker about every little thing. And they had to war to make clear to them there wasnât necessarily a right and a wrong, but just a whole bunch of people trying to kill each other. It was their differences that made him fit together instead and it was something that no one else would get, Draco suspected.  âI get it, I think,â he said once she was done talking. âAs far as I can, I mean. You donât want to dwell on the past and see us for what we are instead of what we were. That makes sense to us, but -â He paused and leaned back on his chair a little, studying her. What he was going to say next wasnât something either one of them was going to like, but that didnât make it less true. âLook, Iâm going to play devilâs advocate here. Not because I want to, but because I think thatâs necessary. Youâre the girl that saved the wizarding world and Iâm the boy that almost helped to destroy it. Youâre dating me to prove a point about purebloods and to show everyone that people with different blood statuses can get along. Youâre dating me for my family money. Iâm dating you because of my familyâs reputation and to show that weâve changed. Iâm dating you so Iâll fall in the good graces of everyone that now matters in the wizarding world.â He paused, catching Hermioneâs gaze again to show her he didnât mean any of it and that it wasnât how he thought at all. Not today, anyway. He explained the pendulum already. âWe know thatâs not how it is, but thatâs how itâs going to look. Now I know youâve always been an exception and you like to defy odds, but you need to be sure that this is what you want to do.â  And he supposed that wasnât all there was to it, something that counted for himself too. As the victor of the war Hermione had much more to lose seeing a Death Eater. âI want to be with you.â The words, spoken so bluntly, shocked himself too. He froze momentarily and stared at her for a couple of seconds as he tried to collect himself. âI do. But choosing each other means weâre also choosing a bunch of other things and I donât want to hide forever. How do you think your friends are going to react? And your parents? I donât want you to lose them because you want to be with me, but you know much better than I do how they would react.â The only way he could imagine Potter and Weasley to react was with utter disgust. They werenât perceptive enough to see the bigger picture. She-Weasley was more intelligent than the two of them combined but had a really bad temper, so Draco wasnât sure if that was going to go over well either. It wasnât just her, though: Draco associated only with people who were like him and thought like him. All Slytherins and blood purists in some sense of the word. Blaise would laugh. Pansy would be disgusted. Theo wouldnât get it. He had the best shot of some kind of support coming from Daphne, but she would definitely be rightfully confused by it as well. He couldnât lose his support system, but he also didnât want his support system to be dependent on their shared blood purity ideals now that they lost the war.
She thought about his words, aware that the people around them, not even including their immediate friends and family, would look at their relationship differently. They were supposed to be opposites, they would only be dating to make each other look good-- but Hermione knew it was beyond that. She understood that what Draco was saying wasnât true, their bonding over the few months had been on feelings and change, not because the other was trying to shed light on themselves and be in good graces of the Wizarding World. âThat is how it's going to look -- but what matters is the opinions we have about ourselves and the opinions of our loved ones. If we just explain and gradually introduce them to what we have, maybe theyâll understand. Itâs what I want to do.â She bit her lip, looking away and thinking once again about Harry and Ron.Â
Her two best friends were going to be the hardest conquest if they did decide to be together -- Hermione couldnât think of anyone else who could hate Draco as much as Harry and Ron. There would be fights, she had no doubt about that, but not one point did Hermione think that either would disown her or disassociate themselves from her because she decided to pursue a Malfoy. They were past those stages in their lives where the âsilent treatmentâ and avoiding were ways to solve problems, at least she saw it that way. Hermione believed Harry and Ron were far more mature than when they were younger, of course, but that didnât change their feelings towards Draco. She only hoped they would want the best for her and allow her to be with someone she liked, but even then that was a far-fetched idea. It would be difficult to convince them.
Hermione looked back over at Draco as he claimed he wanted to be with her, a small smile forming on her lips, her heart beating heavily against her chest. It came out unexpectedly, but she was glad it did, and her worrying ebbed away just the slightest. âI donât want to hide forever, either -- I want to tell people when we are ready.â She explained, biting down on her bottom lip once again, thinking back to Harry and Ron, this time Ginny and the Weasleys, her parents as well. Some would understand, maybe others would be less accepting but would deal with it, but she knew a storm was heading her way with most of them, especially her father. They were loving and kind parents, but he would have something to say about Draco, seeing as Hermione always complained about him when home for the summer and holidays. They would just have to accept it -- if they loved Hermione enough, they should love her enough to be happy for her. âIf it is what I want, and with enough explaining, Iâm sure they will be okay with it eventually. Iâm willing to fight for it.â
