hermione.
She thought about his words, aware that the people around them, not even including their immediate friends and family, would look at their relationship differently. They were supposed to be opposites, they would only be dating to make each other look goodâ but Hermione knew it was beyond that. She understood that what Draco was saying wasnât true, their bonding over the few months had been on feelings and change, not because the other was trying to shed light on themselves and be in good graces of the Wizarding World. âThat is how itâs going to look â but what matters is the opinions we have about ourselves and the opinions of our loved ones. If we just explain and gradually introduce them to what we have, maybe theyâll understand. Itâs what I want to do.â She bit her lip, looking away and thinking once again about Harry and Ron.Â
Her two best friends were going to be the hardest conquest if they did decide to be together â Hermione couldnât think of anyone else who could hate Draco as much as Harry and Ron. There would be fights, she had no doubt about that, but not one point did Hermione think that either would disown her or disassociate themselves from her because she decided to pursue a Malfoy. They were past those stages in their lives where the âsilent treatmentâ and avoiding were ways to solve problems, at least she saw it that way. Hermione believed Harry and Ron were far more mature than when they were younger, of course, but that didnât change their feelings towards Draco. She only hoped they would want the best for her and allow her to be with someone she liked, but even then that was a far-fetched idea. It would be difficult to convince them.
Hermione looked back over at Draco as he claimed he wanted to be with her, a small smile forming on her lips, her heart beating heavily against her chest. It came out unexpectedly, but she was glad it did, and her worrying ebbed away just the slightest. âI donât want to hide forever, either â I want to tell people when we are ready.â She explained, biting down on her bottom lip once again, thinking back to Harry and Ron, this time Ginny and the Weasleys, her parents as well. Some would understand, maybe others would be less accepting but would deal with it, but she knew a storm was heading her way with most of them, especially her father. They were loving and kind parents, but he would have something to say about Draco, seeing as Hermione always complained about him when home for the summer and holidays. They would just have to accept it â if they loved Hermione enough, they should love her enough to be happy for her. âIf it is what I want, and with enough explaining, Iâm sure they will be okay with it eventually. Iâm willing to fight for it.â
Draco honestly doubted that anyone was going to care that this was what Hermione wanted - that Hermione wanted to be with him - in the beginning. All they would see was what Draco had described to her, maybe except for the few people that actually knew them well. But those people saw what the public at large didnât know: their shared history, another reason why them being together wasnât supposed to work and didnât make any sense. The key word in explaining what was going on between them had to be gradually, because announcing that they were dating right off wasnât going to work. His approach was to tell everyone how happy she made him and that she tried to understand him and made him see things differently at first, enough to make them understand she liked him for who he was and accepted who he had been. Once they got that he would tell them who she was, but no earlier.  âOne more thing,â he said. He started to fidget with her fingers, that previously rested with his, again and stared down at the table for a couple of seconds to gather your thoughts. âI like you. You know that. But that doesnât mean I like any of your friends and Iâm not going to play nice.â Ginny he could deal with, something that would probably surprise many people. But Ginny could deal with him too, which was just as surprising. But then there were the Chosen Idiot and his redheaded comrade and Draco simply couldnât go with that. âIf theyâre going to try, I will too. But if they wonât neither will I. What Iâm saying is that Iâm not going to pretend to be someone Iâm not just to get along with your friends.â He wasnât being petty, he was being realistic. He still loathed Potter with every fibre of his being for what he did in their sixth year and Ronald Weasley was what Draco imagined what the mind of the general population would be like and it was something he would much rather never have to deal with again. They were Hermioneâs friends, though, and it was up to her to make them understand. because he wouldnât be making any of an effort to play the role of the scared Death Eater boy that changed 180 degrees once he realized how wrong he was - because that was a stupid fairytale that people made up to rationalize why Draco hadnât been sentenced to Azkaban.
He didnât want to hide forever. As a matter of fact he didnât want to hide at all, because he had spent too long hiding any number of things and that seemed to eat him alive. That wasnât the same, he knew, but he couldnât help but think back to that. âThey shoot deadly glares at me every time I do so much as come near you.â He didnât specify who they were and didnât think he needed to. âAnd Iâm sick of holding my tongue and being the better person about it. I have to be, because weâre only meeting for Head Boy and Head Girl duties. But weâre not.â He wasnât looking for conflict. It just so happened that people didnât have their face expression and tongues under control and Draco didnât have patience for stupidity or idiocy. âMy point is that if we do this, I want to do it right. No sneaking around for months at one end. I understand if you need time to work through this because it is different, I do get that. But I donât want to have to do this in secret the entire school year.â  If they didnât hide it any more, however, it would mean that the word would be out and gossip spread fast - both through the castle and in Dracoâs social circle. The idea that his parents found out that he was dating a mudblood through someone else that just happened to hear about it pained him physically and he closed his eyes for a couple of seconds thinking about it, resting his hand against hers again. âWhat about our parents?â he asked eventually. âI donât know yours, but I have no doubt they know of me.â  Draco surely could imagine it. Twelve year old Hermione returning home from Hogwarts for the first time, filled with stories about magic and the friends she made and this one particular Slytherin boy that had it out for her. Thirteen year old Hermione returning home after being petrified by a basilisk the previous school year that the Slytherin boyâs father had let out of the Chamber of Secrets and made her best friendâs sister do all kinds of horrendous things. Fourteen year old Hermione returning home after having punched this Slytherin boy in the face because she was finally done with the bullying remarks she had to take. And the story went on. Fourth year, when Diggory died by the hands of the Death Eaters. Fifth year, when Umbridge started the Inquisitorial Squad and when Potter was stupid enough to have Lucius end up in Azkaban. Sixth year, when that boy almost committed the murder of a lifetime and when she had to watch her friends get hurt and see Potter get obsessed with him.  And that wasnât even taking into consideration what his parents were going to say. Merlin knew what it was going to be because Draco surely didnât know it. Pulling his hand away from hers, he frowned as he studied her and sighed. âMaybe weâre just too different. Maybe we do better just as friends and getting past this.â His problem was, as ever, that he didnât see what she wanted with him and that he believed she was better off without him.
