I'm happy to see that people are making jokes about Shanks taking the breakup with Buggy so badly that he went and joined the holy knight.
But there's such a depthful conversation to be had about the fact that Shanks probably had this plan in the making before logue town, but was willing to throw all this away if Buggy had just said yes.
Like, Shanks really tied his freedom to Buggy damn.
That feeling when you know you have larger than life responsibilities on your young shoulders. The child of Destiny, they called you. You know exactly what your role is and what your next steps need to be. You're entire life is basically decided for you, with no regard for your own wants, but that's OK! You're not a selfish person! You like helping people! You like making others happy! What greater honor could one hope for, than to be a martyr of the highest order? He should be greatful for the opportunity, right?
Yes, you're not typically a selfish person, but when you look at the one who matters most to you in this world, the person you want more than anything, perhaps the only thing you've ever actually wanted you're suddenly feeling more selfish than you ever have in your entire life. Suddenly nothing else matters except you and him. Nothing else exists.
So you decide to turn your back on those responsibilities, on the hopes and expectations the people you respected/idolized had for you your entire life. The role they forced you into. You want more time. You need more time. Time to run away & pretend to be someone else. Someone free. Time with him.
So you outstretch your hand, more than ready to be with the person you love and live the life you used to fantasize the two of you having together as adults. A life where you both are completely content & fulfilled, even if the rest of the world has to suffer for it....
Only for him to slap your hand away and call you a coward He's right though, isn't he? How can he argue against that? and crush all your hopes and dreams in an instant. He rejects them. Rejects you.
So you don't even try to fight back. You stand there like an idiot because you are one as you watch the center if your world scurry away from you, out of your life and putting as much distance as possible between you two. You don't even allow yourself to move until you're so cold from the rain you're numb, because that's what you get. You should've know. You should've know. You. Should. Have. Known.
You should have know Destiny was never going to let you out if its grasp.
TRITOMA = CROCODILE: The Most Canon Breakdown You’ve Ever Seen
Tritoma is a kind, cheerful, mischievous, and ambitious empress of the Kuja tribe, drawing a parallel to Monkey D. Luffy. She first appears in Chapter 1156 — g̲o̲ (ご – 5) m̲u̲ (む – 6). Starting out as a “errand girl,” Tritoma soon replaces her predecessor, Shakky, whom she once admired. She unexpectedly dies from Love Sickness toward an unknown person (when unrequited, leading to apathy, frustration, and loss of matter), leaving the Kuja throne unstable for 13 years. She loses her crown.
During this time, a certain pirate appears on the Grand Line under the alias “Crocodile” (not a snake, but a predatory reptile), full of ambition to become Pirate King and find the One Piece. After some initial maritime successes, overestimates his abilities he challenges Whitebeard, whom he admired, in an attempt to take his place. This challenge leads to a crushing defeat, frustration, and a turn to the shadowy side of the World Government (as a Warlord of the Sea) and the creation of his own kingdom with an Ancient Weapon.
Beneath his outward composure lies emotional instability, a fragile ego, and a vengeful nature — his true character. Interestingly, Crocodile retains a passion for power, fame, and influence. He wants to matter.
Wielding the Sand-Sand Fruit, he spreads chaos, intrigue, and war. He brings drought to the land and famine to the people. But his rule collapses in battle against Luffy, who is full of the same idealism and ambition he once had. He loses his crown again.
Speaking of Alabasta — Crocodile despises ideas of loyalty and patriotism. In Alabasta, while convincing Vivi of the nature of humanity and how states truly work, he says: “Love for your country will destroy you”, “In the end, your people will annihilate themselves”, “You can’t save this country.” He speaks like a cynical misanthrope and nihilist. (What shook his faith in people so deeply? Why does he care so little for loyalty to the people?)
In Baroque Works, he is obsessed with the “Mr. and Miss” partner system (perhaps a reflection of a failed personal relationship), making a single exception for the queer Bon Clay, accepting that he is both man and woman. (Why is he so tolerant toward a queer person, and why does he not impose the partner rule on him?)
When forming Baroque Works, he hides his identity even from his closest subordinates. Currently, as part of Cross Guild, he is content to take the lead in actions while letting someone else (Buggy) take the public hit.
Crocodile guards the secret of his past, which involves a debt to Ivankov. The revelation of this secret would be so devastating that it allows Ivankov to “keep Croco-boy on a leash” and use him for personal advantage. Notably, Ivankov’s most prominent — and admittedly awkward — power is altering a person’s sex hormones. By the way, we never saw Crocodile’s face during Gol D. Roger’s execution!
Oda repeatedly hints that Luffy could have shared Crocodile’s fate had he abandoned his dreams and allowed himself to grow bitter. In battle, Crocodile admitted: “I could have been just like you. Do you know how many people I’ve betrayed?” and “The more a man learns about the ocean, the less he shouts grand declarations. The more you learn, the less you dream.” To which Luffy replied: “You’re pathetic. I’ll surpass you.”
Crocodile hates being made a fool of. He hates losing. He considers it pitiful and weak. And, in his own words: “The losers can’t decide justice”, “The strongest wins.” In Alabasta, when Mr. Prince pulls off a ruse, Crocodile temporarily forgets about the Poneglyph, the rebellion, and the country’s impending destruction, rushing to find him with the words: “I never leave alive those who make a fool of me!” (Who fooled him so badly in the past that he swore such a vow?)
During the Marineford War, right after Luffy’s father’s identity is revealed (and why didn’t we see Crocodile’s reaction to that, even though we saw the reactions of random extras?), Crocodile did everything in his power to help Luffy save his brother — and, most importantly, survive. His remark is particularly striking: “If you want to protect someone, do it properly.” Protect someone? That sounds entirely out of character for a man who rejects any emotional bonds with people.
After meeting Luffy in Impel Down and the events of Marineford, Crocodile seems reinvigorated, filled with motivation for new achievements. He heads to the New World with Mr. 1, later teams up with Mihawk in the Cross Guild, and so on — all while actively keeping track of Luffy’s rise (numerous background scenes show him reading wanted posters and newspapers).
i have no idea what’s going on with shuggy currently in the manga (shuggy is canon i say. CANON) but what’s this abt oda nerfing them? i’m so confused
Spoilers for chapter 1169. read at your own risk.
So, the full summary for 1169 has been leaked and—
While Shanks didn't call Buggy brother (this is very important imo), Gaban calls Shuggy "our" (as in him + Roger & Rayleigh I'm assuming) sons so now the antis are saying Shuggy is proship/incest buuuuut
Tbh, I don't think it's that big of a deal lol. I'll explain more under the read more....
WHEN WILL WE LEARN FOR CERTAIN ODA??
‼️Don't click the read more if you aren't caught up to Elbaph in the manga & you don't want to be spoiled. MAJOR spoilers discussed ahead. Read at your own risk‼️

'I wish I could take the pain away from you'
Lyrics from the song Precious by Starbenders, original by Depeche Mode
I thought if I shattered enough, someone somewhere would find a piece of me soft enough to keep.
oh Bingzu..
I love shuggy in general, but I especially love the lore aspect of them. The implications. To me something already seemed broken in their relationship for them to part the way they did and then not even try to communicate again (as far as we know), not just from Buggy's end, but for Shanks too. I desperately want to know what happened for these two seemingly bright and cheerful kids full of dreams to end up where they are now, a sniveling wreck at rock bottom after years of stagnation and embracing his worst impulses + a massively powerful and respected pirate who nonetheless seems unfulfilled and is perpetually drunk when not performing his self imposed duty to babysit the world. Because I'm a bit of a contrarian who gets tired of the Roger Pirates being fantastic parents in a lot of posts, I would really like it if it comes down to some failing of theirs. Even if that's not the case though I still want more backstory. Sorry for this meaningless ramble, I'm just having feelings about fictional pirates and needed to express it somehow.
Ahhh, no need to apologize for rambling here! 💖
I love and adore talking about shuggy and receiving shuggy asks! and you know I kind of do agree with you there on that part about not being a fan of the head canon of the Roger pirates being these great parent figures to Shanks or Buggy (that's just me personally) I also kind of don't like enforcing the traditional found family tropes/dynamics onto the Roger pirates in general. I don't think it's like Roger really intended to be the parenting type of role models for the boys. I think it was simply more of Buggy and Shanks were growing up under them not being exactly "raised" by them. I hope I am making sense there- sorry!
Like Shanks and Buggy are very emotionally immature and not well-adjusted individuals. And it makes sense due to the adults that they had in their life, I mean Rayleigh and Roger didn't even properly communicate with one another concerning the whole matter with Shakky. Rayleigh bottled his feelings up for Shakky to save Roger's feelings and that was breaking his heart. There was a clearly a disconnect in the communication between the two.
Also, Buggy and Shanks were two immature boys who squabble and butted heads all the time, and it doesn't help that neither one of them ever actually reached a healthy conclusion to any of their arguments without Rayleigh stepping in. They really needed to find a way to resolve their fights on their own without somebody breaking it up.
You talked about thinking that there were already implications of their relationship being broken before they parted, and that's an interesting concept to think about. You know Shanks strikes me as quite oblivious, so I imagine even if Buggy did shows signs of insecurity (which I doubt he showed it openly tbh) I don't think Shanks would pick up the clues that Buggy felt inferior to him, he probably even understand the reasoning why behind it either.
I think back to one of the earliest shuggy flashback we got where Shanks and Buggy were under the night sky with Shanks drinking talking about their future as a pirate captain. I tried searching for the panel because I have it saved somewhere, but I cannot find it at the moment, but I do wonder at the point in time where they agreed that would part ways was Shanks just mindlessly agreeing with Buggy was saying? At point in time did he already imagine himself as a pirate with Buggy by his side or was he imaging their futures separate from each other? Like did Shanks really meant it when he said that they should go their separate ways?? (hopefully I am not misremembering the quote, but my brain is kind of scattered lately)
I desperately need Shanks' perspective and inner thoughts, I'm dying to know more from his inner world he's still so mysterious after all these years. and you're not alone I literally want more shuggy flashbacks and backstory. We are severely missing out on Shanks' pov.
Nobody can convince me that these two do not miss each other, like they very much still miss one another, where they both are at in life currently nobody can tell me that they are actually happy with how their life turned out. One stayed years and years in the east blue and remained stagnant whereas the other became one of the strongest pirates in the world yet from we can see that the title doesn't fulfill him, he stays drunk majority of the time.
I have no doubt that those few first few years of Shanks and Buggy being apart was hell for both of them.
We still need to find out what Roger told Shanks, I feel like that's one of the big puzzles pieces that's still missing.
Me trying to explain to someone that it makes no sense for Shanks' character to get married & have a kid with Makino when Oda has literally said he isn't interested in relationships, already has Uta + having a bio kid completely goes against the pattern of adopted parents in One Piece NEVER having bio kids, Uta is special & the exception since she literally appeared on accident in a chest just like him (it was destiny!), and has been shown multiple times implying/outright stating his dream life is being a carefree pirate with his childhood bestie exactly like Dorry & Brogy who are noticeable bachelors with no kids/wives of their own, but they aren't taking all these valid points seriously bcus "Makino & Shanks have a connection!!" & ppl think Oda is a lazy writer who randomly slaps all opposite gender characters together with shared panel time even though ShanksxMakino goes against his predicent with romance based on his writing patterns & Benn Beckman is literally right there & perfectly fits Oda's love of turning players into family men once they meet the "right girl" to settle down with & who suspiciously is almost always with Makino in offical art while Shanks is typically doing something else & ignoring her ASDFGHJKL
Is the "Shaggy/Mosa" Loki talked to actually Shirahoshi!? Oda setting up a Loki x Shirahoshi ship?? LokiHoshi!?!?
Ok, Hear me out. I know that at this point in time there is barely any indication at all about the identity of the person Loki was conversing with in chapter 1134, but for some reason my mind immediately went to Shirahoshi. I didn't pay it much mind because that's kind of random right?
That is....until not only did a One Piece content creator also toss around Shirahoshi's name in their analysis of the chapter, but a mutual of mine @wyvernslovecake ALSO said they had the same theory as me so!!!
I do feel like since at least 3 people started going down the same thought process the idea might hold some type of validity. Perhaps our minds are picking up on context clues & hints Oda has been leaving??
Anyways, this sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole & I surprised myself with how well this started to come together. Under the read more I'll explain why I even thought this in the first place & what panel made me lock on to this idea.

About pirates and their treasure (a theory)
You know what they say, right? X marks the treasure. Luffy has a huge X on his chest, where his heart is. Buggy has big crossbones painted all over his forehead. Chopper's hat bears the X mark. Strawhats used to have an X mark on their hands in their famous farewell scene with Vivi.
There are many really ridiculous theories trying to connect the X on Chopper's hat to the main treasure of One Piece, claiming it points towards Long Ring Long Land because the dots surrounding the X (post-timeskip) remind them of that island's shape. Don't worry, this won't be one of those theories. In fact, we're going completely different direction here, and by the end of this post you might instead start to vomit rainbows of happiness. Don't blame me if that happens :D
Let's start off with this mysterious occurance. Both Chopper and Franky mistake the symbol for danger with that of a pirate flag. What's up with that? Do those two scenes have anything in common?
Let's take a look at Hiluluk trying to explain the meaning of skull and crossbones. "This shows there's nothing a man can't do", "it makes man fight like a pirate", "it's the symbol of man's faith", "thanks to it the man rejects impossibilities". To understand this, let's take a closer look at history of Chopper's hat that bears an X, because it's for sure connected to this idea.
Chopper got that hat as his first ever gift, from his first ever friend, as his very first peace offering. Triple first meaning. And he got it from his most favourite person in the world. That's why it's his treasure from now on. Both Chopper and Hiluluk have matching hats from now on.
Hiluluk has his "treasure" symbol on his medical suitcase, because it's thanks to the specimens he keeps there that he can cure people (later it's the same for Chopper and his medicine bag, also bearing an X). Being a doctor and curing people is his treasure. Kureha is wearing a shirt with a cherry blossom image on it, just like on Hiluluk's flag. The symbol on the shirt is close to her heart. That's because Hiluluk was her treasure. That's why she picked his dream and took care of Chopper. Soon Chopper becomes her treasure as well.
Kureha and Hiluluk bantered with each other all the time, but they also knew each other for ages. Hiluluk knew that Kureha isn't overly emotional, but that he can count on her. After all she always helped him without taking any money for it. Her actions are honest, unlike her words. who does it remind me of? Do you catch the drift?
Pirates love their treasures. But pirates are just people, and actually for most people their biggest treasure can be something like a memento, autograph or other object holding emotional value, but if we put it in the context of One Piece we have for example Chopper's hat. Obviously it's his treasure, but not because it's a hat, but because it's a gift from Hiluluk. They both wore hats from then on and it symbolically connected them together. That connection is what is Chopper's actual biggest treasure. The reminder of love and acceptance he received from the most important person to him.
I think part of the reason I’m so obsessed with MXTX’s works is the way that each story seems to hold you gently as say “Your kindness mattered. It didn’t alleviate the suffering, it did not undo the pain. But your kindness mattered.”
Kindness could not erase Luo Binghe’s abuse, but it changed the story into a kinder one.
Kindness did not stop Wei Wuxian’s death, but it did save a-Yuan.
Kindness did not undo Xie Lian’s suffering, but it renewed his sincerity to help others.
Kindness did not change the entire world, but it helped create a softer future.
Its such a nice message, that maybe kindness will not protect you, maybe you don’t see the outcome of it, but you should still try to be kind, and I love that honestly.
*shakes them*
I honestly believe one of the reasons Shuggy gets so much hate is because Shuggy as a ship forces people to acknowledge that Shanks has quite a bit of flaws as a person/character.
Exuse my vulgarity, but this fandom has been sucking Shanks' cock since the very first chapter & since we rarely see him he developed this Gary Sue like reputation within the fandom. It doesn't help that the person we mostly see talk about him (Luffy) is his biggest fan & will literally try to punch you if you said anything bad about him lmao.
However, his canonical relationship & dynamic with Buggy highlights the dude's worst traits & people can't fucking handle it.
I think people largely want to ignore that Shanks:
1) Is extremely dense (This is the one thing that separates him from Luffy imo. Luffy is a dummy, but he's got great EQ!)
2) Very much holds too much of his personal feelings back. Thus leaving ample opportunity for misunderstandings.
3) IS super immature (something Oda has literally said about him & which has been alluded to by his own crew.)
And lastly
4) has literally been called a COWARD multiple times in the story by people around him.
I don't know about you, but someone who is arguably top 3 strongest people in the entire story being called a coward is pretty indicative of less than desirable personality traits, no?
So in conclusion, the Shuggy relationship is a realistic insight into Shanks' true character outside the rose tinted glasses & not everyone can stomach it. Some people actively resent it & the fact it goes against population headcanon.
Also, Shanks is definitely the piner in the dynamic which drives people INSANE lmao.
I don’t understand your passion for shuggy? I think they’re fine but the same goes for every popular shanks ship (benn, mihawk) and buggy and mr3/alvida (I don’t really fuck with cg). But you are positively obsessed with shuggy and I wish I could get it what’s about them making them special? I’m anime only btw but you just send manga panels idgafabout spoilers. Is it that you just like the dynamic between them? You write whole answers about those two so it makes it more serious in my eyes?
Hey anon! I'm gunna try extra hard with my tone here because I'm often told I come off rude because of how blunt I am despite my intentions so forgive me if I come off too agressive 😭.....

I do agree with you on ships not being that serious but I don’t see shuggy being that different? Shanks does have lingering feelings but it comes from not understanding what exactly happened. Buggy would be so much better if he wasn’t around shanks anymore since that where his issues came from. He needs to be away and already has a crew who followed him for years, and alvida and galdino who I consider to be his closest friend. Cross guild is in canon abusing to buggy and maybe that would change but even if not that doesn’t change the fact that buggy has close people to him who supported him for YEARS and understand him better than shanks ever would. It was nice backstory but shuggy don’t have that much material. It’s mostly fanon and flashbacks who lead to nothing
Your biggest misinterpretation anon is that you think the Shuggy story is well & done with & not just in the middle of their arc & being set up by Oda to have some type of proper conclusion. Which tbh I don't fault you for too much because outside of people who ship them fans tend to overlook the ongoing narrative thread with these two.
Mostly because they don't like Buggy & love Shanks & weirdly think Shanks is "too good" for Buggy to be such an important part of his arc depsite giving up the One Piece for him & noticeably still having positive feelings for the clown. This would be like saying if Usopp & Luffy truly parted ways at the end of Eneis Lobby that it would mean Luffy doesn't give af about his friend anymore. Which we know is just not true. Whether you like it or not Buggy was Shanks's Usopp/Nami/Zoro/Sanji etc.
Is there a possibility you would talk about how buggy lacks any deep relationships in his life? I know he has his crew and they do like him but it’s never what he had with shanks. And his relationship with Alvida and Galdino feels completely business based. Why? I like HC it’s different but yeah. We saw CG reactions. Betrayal by galdino is definitely something I didn’t expect THIS FAST. And I know they can’t fight them but his crew maybe has some a little worry? But not so much…
Buggy purposefully surrounds himself with like-minded individuals who are a dangerous combination of ambitious and unscrupulous. Galdino and Alvida are good (albeit inconsistent) allies, but they're certainly not good friends. When Buggy suited their needs (Alvida wanting to track down Luffy, Galdino wanting to make it out of Impel Down alive) they aided in his journey, but when he stopped being favorable, they stopped being in his corner. I've made a tweet on my thoughts about Cross Guild's B-listers which I think sums it up pretty well: this is the environment he cultivated for himself.
Even his longtime crewmates, Mohji and Cabaji, stand by as he gets tortured. Why? Because if they're not self-serving manipulators like Alvida and Galdino, then they're cowards, through and through. It's the exact same reason no one came to rescue him at Impel Down, despite their self-proclaimed love for their captain. They recognize internal power structures and do not challenge them.
But this makes sense to me. Buggy's rejection of Shanks -- someone Oda has established as a true, honest friend -- sent him down a different path. He has no real friends anymore because he embraced betrayal. He chose not to live the way he wanted out of fear and insecurity, and as a result, his inner circle reflects the hollow shell of the real man he always wanted to be.
