Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Province, China 1937
In 1937 XUAR didnāt exist and the CCP was not in control of this land. By the 1940s this would be East Turkistan Republic and then it would only be called āXinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Regionā after the 1950s
The PRC wasn't the one who named it Xinjiang, it was already called Xinjiang by the Qing Dynasty who conquered them. When this photo was taken, most of Xinjiang was controlled by the Republic of China which later lost to the Communists and now only rules over the island of Taiwan. But yes it was the PRC Communists who added "Uyghur Autonomous Region" afterwards.
The Qing did call it Xinjiang but after they fell there were so many warlords and uprisings and the establishments of local rule that I would barely call it under the rule of the republic of China (just one of the foreign invaders that was establishing their rule over the locals). But like I said, it would be wrong to call it XUAR until after the 1950s. It wasnāt an āautonomousā region of the modern state of China.
