The Claude html tag ao3 checker situation is so. Man. I'm just resisting my gut instinct which was to be smug mean girl hater about the popular fic I'm aware of that was caught doing it and going "haha, I tried reading that fic and gave up on it because it sucked. It was never good!!" Because otherwise usually my instinct when I think a fic is a bad is to, of course, mind my own damn business. Which I do. And alot of people genuinely liked the fic I thought was bad, and will continue to like fics I think are bad! And thats fine! But there's something satisfying in having a "justifiable reason" to pile on, we see it all the time in fandom. And that's probably why so many people are going on about "witchhunts" even though its one of the few real foolproof ways to have ever spotted AI in a fic, because some people are chomping at the bit to have any excuse to hate! People are getting paranoid running their fics through "normal" AI detectors not realizing its specifically about html tags that claude adds that say claude in them. It's such a shitty situation all around.....

I don't think I articulated this well earlier today but what I was also getting at re: any of the fics caught using AI that were "badly written" is that I and others shouldn't be using the fic being bad as some kind of "I-always-knew" type "gotcha", because there are and always will be earnestly written fics from 100% human hands that are bad. And that is part of the bummer because I want people to be able to post their earnest terrible fic in peace. And conversely, there are likely fics that are very "good" that have used AI without disclosing it, and will never get caught or even suspected because they don't have these "bad" tells.
