Jabber Wonger.
His name didn’t tell you anything the first time you heard it, and neither did his face the first time you met. You were told to keep an eye on him and show him the ropes. Since he wasn’t the first rookie put in your charge, you expected the usual.
Stress, Curiosity, Recklessness, Hidden ego, Attempted manipulation. You’d seen it all already.
No matter what path they took, everyone shared the same final destination—the one that occurred after getting humbled, remembering their place, and falling in line. All you needed to do was to remind them who you were.
You were neither childhood best friends living their dream nor a high school teacher and their passionate student. You were assassins.
That was no job your average Joe just decided to do after waking up. There was no opportunity for simply pouting and leaving; that would be too easy. By signing a contract, you put everything you possessed on that piece of paper, and nothing could cancel that.
If a single piece of information got out, and you would be gone. As they said, walls had ears.
Jabber didn’t particularly look like the kind of idiot who’d throw his life out the window; he had already done that. The grin he constantly wore said that he didn’t have anything else to lose. At this point, death could as well be the best outcome for a man of his kind.
“Do we stay in the same room since you gotta watch me 24/7?”
“Let’s hope you’re more discreet while working than with your words,” you replied without trying to hide your exasperation.
Jabber didn’t look fazed by your answer but instead sent his hands in his pockets and kept walking with his chin obnoxiously high. One thing was sure: you weren’t about to get bored by that one.
“Ouhhh, you’re already looking up to see me working?” he asked in one of the most irritable voices you’d ever heard. “Tell me, tell me, what do you think I'll do? Actually, what has Mr. Bigboss told you? My fighting style? My story? What I like? How I got here?”
You didn’t pay mind to his rambling and kept walking like you were alone. If you already allowed your blood to boil, he’d play with you by the end of the week. Ignorance was often the best pick.
But it wasn’t the one that time. Neither was it when you went to lock yourself in your room because your phone kept vibrating with notifications. It wasn’t the one the next morning either, when you were getting ready for your first task together.
Others passed by and gave you pitiful or mocking looks. That was something that usually came with the crazy new arrivals.
“Do you ever stop talking?”
You decided to speak up while you both entered the car that was supposed to take you to your destination, determined to find silence (or something close) during the ride.
Jabber’s eyes slid from your face to the rearview mirror, and yours directly followed. The driver averted his gaze as soon as he noticed and cleared his throat. “Just wanted to confirm the destination.”
You glanced over his shoulder and nodded. “Yeah, that’s the right address.”
On your right, Jabber had turned his attention to the window. The action was unexpected, since he didn’t even answer you or reply with ten more questions and affirmations, but it was not unwelcome. You caught yourself glancing, then looking a little bit longer than what you’d intended to. If he chose to be silent, might as well make the most of it.
His traits were slightly more defined than what you’d expected. As his expression had flattened, you saw how naturally sharp his jawline appeared or how his eyebrows sat low over his eyes. You’d assumed he’d looked softer without his millions of piercings, but the effect was quite the opposite. Even without catching a glimpse of his eyes, he looked way more intimidating.
I’m ready to get this over with. His stance made it impossible to not read that.
Your eyes shifted to the window to see if you could read more from his gaze only to see that he had it glued on you.
You frowned at him and maintained eye contact. Even if he’d just made your heart take a leap in your chest, you couldn’t afford to look away. He was testing you, and you had planned on acing whatever test he had for you flawlessly.
Jabber pinched his fingers together, zipped his lips with a grin, and looked away. You, on the other hand, ended up failing the evaluation miserably since that dumb gesture succeeded in pulling a smirk from you.
Having him around was going to be fun.

You pushed through the doors with your palms hurting from how much you dug your nails into them. Some greeted you or asked how you felt as if the answer wasn’t clearly written on your face.
“Where is he?”
A finger pointed mindlessly towards the dining hall, so you followed their hint. You found the man you were searching for slumped over the counter.
“Woah, you look mad pissed! Already time for our debrief?”
Jabber’s words reached you easily, but you still forced a smile. The rush of adrenaline was making it hard to think straight. You wanted to grab him and slam his head against that marble counter just like you wanted to laugh it off and hand him over to someone else.
Your hands moved on their own, and grabbed the glass of whisky his fingers were wrapped around before flinging the drink in his face.
“Come with me.”
Conversations quieted down, only leaving Jabber’s grunt to resonate in the room. As you walked away, the low sound turned into a faint laugh. “Yes ma’am.”
You heard the clink of his jewellery from behind as he stood up and followed your steps. Silly whistles soon filled the silence between you, as if you hadn’t just humiliated him in front of a bunch of people.
You didn’t say anything, out of fear of losing the tiny amount of restraint you still had. You waited for you to be locked in the conference room to do that.
“Is this a game to you?”
Jabber slouched against the wall and yawned. “What do you mean? We did the job as we were told. What’s the deal?”
“What’s the deal?! I’ll tell you what’s the deal!” you snapped. “You don’t cover your face at all when anyone could step in and see you; you engage with passersby when you know damn well we shouldn’t; and you just disappear at the end while I’m handling the attention you brought onto us! That’s the fucking deal!”
Your heart was beating just as painfully fast as how each word left your mouth.
“You’re mad over that? Man, you should’ve just told me you wanted me close to ya.”
That was enough to cut the last thread of patience you were holding onto.
You curled your fingers in his collar and shoved him to the wall. All you wanted was to shove your fists into his face and wipe off the smug expression he was so attached to. Kick him, push him, bite him, throttle him. The rage was overflowing your body, heating your blood up and flooding your mind until you couldn’t think of anything else.
And he knew that.
You’d already seen Jabber smile—there wasn’t a single doubt about that—but never that hard. You could feel the acceleration of his heartbeat beneath your hands or how he was literally shaking like a leaf. “Come on, give it to me.”
Your superior’s words suddenly resurfaced.
“I’m certain you can handle him, even if he’s a little crazy. You’ve been mentoring new arrivals for a while, when we think about it. But let me warn you now, he has some… special tendencies. You could call him a masochist.”
Upon receiving the news, you simply agreed and paid it no mind. But that had led you to where you were now, pinning him to the wall and ready to smash your knuckles into his jaw.
With satisfaction, you watch his smirk falter when you let go off his top. “What? Too scared to throw a punch?” he asked, his voice still slightly trembling.
You scoffed and pushed your hair back. “What does it look like? I’m using my self-control.” Your reply lacked almost all of the sharpness it contained seconds ago.
“Fuck you mean self-control?! I don’t need that!”
You turned on your heels and unlocked the door. “Gonna see you tomorrow morning and we’ll head out again at night. Be on time.”
Your second test had been passed, even if it was barely.

A/N 🌝
Hey so uhm, I'm still searching for inspiration to write chapter 3 of cook & artisan. I HAVE begun writing, but I'm stuck. So yeah, until then, I'll probably work with my millions of oneshots ideas. Mb for the waitttt, I swear I'll not give up on it so easily (even if the next update will be in ten years) 🥹
