In the fold Elizaveta tells Zoya this:

Zoya sees her inability to hide her thorns with flowers and be gentler and sweeter as a failure, something that holds her back. This comes up again when she tells Nikolai that there’s nothing in her garden’s thorn wood worth loving, that it’s ‘all prickles and spines and anger’.

Not only does Nikolai tell her that she’s wrong, he goes on to explain why, that the thorns are an integral part of what makes the thorn wood valuable to the garden, that its strength protects everything else in it.

We then finally get this beautiful passage where Nikolai tells Zoya this, lets her know that she only ever has to be herself, that he does not need her to have blossoms.
