kokichi is pale.

everyone knows this.

it hasn’t been shocking news since he popped out his mothers womb that fine June, reflecting all the lights in the hospital, blinding all who passed by.

not exactly blessed by some melanin god, but at least he doesn’t blend into the printer paper when doing refills.

dating kokichi, shuichi didn’t think much would change. they’d live their normal lives, except maybe kiss and hug every try once in a while

until the two were invited to a beach party.

the two chase each other across the sand for about half an hour before kokichi is noticeably a lot more red than he ought to be after a bit of running.

one of their friends sits him down (more like pulls him by the ear and shoves him onto the ground), and (aggressively) starts slathering him up in the highest SPF they have

shuichi learns two lessons from that day on.

1. kokichi needs to bathe in sunscreen

something about chuuya never cutting his hair since he and dazai met

just growing it out, experimenting with different hairstyles, but never cutting it.

he never gives reason to it, not verbally. just plays with the ginger strands while swirling a glass of wine. staring out the window watching the snow fall as the port mafia goes insane over dazai’s defection.

the port mafia have a tradition of cutting one’s hair off during a courtship. ridding one of their past life of crime, and adopting a new identity by the loss of their hair.

four years later, after soukoku are reunited during their mission, dazai’s kicking back at the agency, ignoring kunikida as he yells at the other. there’s a knock at the door.

inside, a lock of ginger hair.

the agency are up in a panic, running around searching for some kind of code decryption book to understand whether this lock of hair is a threat or some weird port mafia intimidation tactic.

dazai smiles softly to himself. tucking the strands into an old locket, hidden away in the breast pocket of his coat.

when dazai sees chuuya again, the other has lost the lovelock style, the foreboding silhouette, and instead

he stands at the agency door. soft smile. casual, comfortable clothes. resume clutched to his chest.

the boys debuted in 2018. it’s 2026. it’s been 8 years. how can you justify the mistreatment he gets time and time again when nothing changes?? how can you see him clearly being hidden and tucked away as if he didn’t damn well choose this career??
