Goree Island is home to Senegal's history within the trans-atlantic slave trade and the house of slaves is one of the major attractions on the Island. It is popularly called Maison des Esclaves. This is a monumental African structure and forms part of Africa's slave history. 'Door of No return' which every man, woman and child walked to the slave boat, catching a last glimpse of their homeland and shipped to Europe and other parts of the world. Definitely an eye opening experience to man's inhumanity to his fellow man. Aside from the island’s memorials, you can find unique paintings, carvings and sculptures by many resident artists. My first pottery class with this humble and wonderful guy. Even though he is deaf, we managed to make a piece together and it turned out pretty well 😬 . As part of the CSC experience, we have given an opportunity to participate in an activity that will help support the community. We were able to visit l’Association pour la Promotion des Handicapés de Ouakam (APHO) which translates to the Association for the Promotion of Handicapped People of Ouakam. The APHO was created in year 1998 by a group of handicapped persons from Oukam. It aims to be a favourable environment for solving problems related to their education, training and integration into working life.
