Goree Island is home to Senegal's history within the trans-atlantic slave trade and the house of slaves is one of the major attractions on the Island. It is popularly called Maison des Esclaves. This is a monumental African structure and forms part of Africa's slave history. 'Door of No return' which every man, woman and child walked to the slave boat, catching a last glimpse of their homeland and shipped to Europe and other parts of the world. Definitely an eye opening experience to man's inhumanity to his fellow man. Aside from the island’s memorials, you can find unique paintings, carvings and sculptures by many resident artists.
