So I bought a barbie doll because quarantine has gotten to me and I really really wanted to attempt doll customizing! I’ve watched a TON of Dollightful videos over the past few years and I’ve wanted to try my hand at the craft for a while. My motivation really amped up when I reread The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite a third time. I just am so in love with the design for the White Violin in the comics so I decided to turn this doll into her!

I’ve chronicaled the whole experience on my Instagram story (shameless plug btw go follow me on Instagram my user is @/aquatic_despair) and as you can tell my first step was to strip the doll down to its basics by removing clothes, hair, and factory paint. Next I used boiling water to soften the head and pop it off to remove the remaining plugs.

The next step was sanding off the molded on underwear and painting the body! I used acrylic paint, simply because this is my first doll and I’m not sure how much funds I’m willing to put into this hobby if I do continue it.

Next I painted the whole body and the head the base coat of white, as you can tell, my setup is very high quality. (/s)

Next was the faceup! I once again used acrylic paints, and I also used my prismacolor colored pencils. I went over it again later to darken what I wanted darkened and to add eye shines.

Next I decided to brush out some yarn in order to make hair wefts and glued them onto her scalp according to where her hair would part, (there are plenty of good tutorials for this online btw!) and finally I made her a tiny violin and bow (which both look a little wonky since I never work that small) and I was finally done!

Now unfortunately I haven’t been able to get proper pictures of her yet but I can give y’all these since I have them!

And there you have it! My first doll custom ever! She was really fun to make and I’m so glad I actually decided to make her. I hope you all enjoyed this abnormally long post!!
