It was flawless in every sense and so much better than Crystal imo.

I don’t have the exact numbers but here’s what went down:

Bringing back into the game a huge franchise like Sailor Moon (the biggest magical girl franchise, famous all over the world) was a big deal and serious business so obviously TOEI were looking for ways to milk as much as they possibly could.

The reason Crystal wasn’t aired on TV wasn’t because ~Crystal didn’t get any sponsors or because people weren’t interested in it~ (Pride Side excuses #3 & #6). Who wouldn’t be interested in the revival of such enormous franchise?.

It’s just that out all of the possibilities that TOEI had to milk the franchise, the NicoNico deal was obviously the one that meant more benefits for them.

So NicoNico had to pay a lot for those exclusive streaming rights meaning that those who wanted to watch Crystal could only do it at NicoNico’s website.

NicoNico even subbed the show in a lot of different languages (more views = more people watching ads = more money) so they could get more out of the show.

The 2 episodes a month thing was also part of deal because the longer people are premium users the longer they have to keep paying for the subscription.

NicoNico gained a lot of new premium users because of Crystal (that most of them would obviously unsubscribe as soon as Crystal was finished) so making each episode available only the first and third saturday of each month kept those people as premium users for longer.

And that’s basically the NicoNico deal.

Unfortunately (for NicoNico) the show didn’t turn out to be as everyone expected (mainly the reason this blog exists) so the views for each episode on NicoNico were decreasing like crazy hence NicoNico not wanting to renew the deal with TOEI for the second season of Crystal which is the reason why the second season of the anime won’t be an ONA.
