Trigger Warning: suicide, violence, ableism The more “Me Before You” trailers I see, I wanna throw up. Should’ve never turned the tv on but bedrest life has me desperate. Disabled people don’t exist to “change your life” while in return you have no consideration about accessibility (online or IRL) or justice involving disability marriage rights, etc. Able bodied people playing disabled characters deny opportunities to disabled actors. Able bodied people writing stories about disabled people are often going to get it pretty wrong and turn it into inspiration porn unless otherwise educated, this movie, falls under that “often” category, as the ending, hate to spoil it for you, jk, I don’t care, is maybe the most ableist, inspiration porn of an ending I’ve ever heard of: Disabled person only exists to change and better able person’s life and decides to commit suicide because their life will only hold the able bodied person back. Yup. Perpetuating the belief that we should all just off ourselves because we hold our abled loved ones back, we burden them, their lives are harder because we exist. This is a very ableist idea that is more popular than many realize because it can be very discreet… but it can also be very blunt, as there are many cases where people believe it is a “mercy killing” to kill a disabled child/person.  So…. if you want to support a film like that I don’t even know what more to say to you. And no, in a media where disabled representation is little to nothing I WILL NOT SETTLE for such a GROTESQUE ableist misrepresentation of our experiences, particularly as a wheelchair user with a chronic illness, still losing physical abilities throughout my body. I will not support it, I will not accept it as okay. I will not accept the ableist idea that my life and my body are not worth existance, equality, access, because of my disability. And I will not accept the fetishizing/objectifying idea that my sole purpose in a romantic relationship is to “inspire” or “change [my partner’s] life”, our lives are so much more than for able-bodied consumption and disregard.
