Catchphrases: meaning and puns!
All Cure seems to use the word Hirogaru (広がる), which is in the title! Hirogaru means to spread, or to expand.
Mugen ni Hirogaru Aoi Sora! Cure Sky!
Lit. “The blue sky that expands to infinity”
Pretty straight forward.
Huwari Hirogaru Yasashii Hikari! Cure Prism!
Lit. “The gentle light that softly expands”
Huwari (ふわり)= softly, gently; HUWAHUWA (ふわふわ) is a very common expression to describe something that’s light and soft. Like wool, cotton, clouds, even feelings!
Yasashii (優しい)= gentle
Hikari (光)= light
AGE-te Hirogaru Wonderful! Cure Butterfly!
Lit. “The Wonderful that rises and expands”
(Yes, it’s grammatically wrong in English, that’s very common in anime when they try to use English within Japanese phrases. I would say they are really trying to say The wonders that rises and expands, but it just sounds better when they end the phrase with WONDERFUL)
AGE (あげ) is written in Katakana (Katakana is often used for emphasis or pun). Age-ru (あげる) means to rise up, to ascend. It can be used in many context: physically ascending, or heightening of mood.
There’s also a butterfly called Ageha-Chou (アゲハ蝶), so maybe they are trying to play on ambiguity by using Katakana, hiding multiple meanings in it.
I don’t see the catchphrase for Cure Wing, but when I see it I will provide some meaning and context for it as well!
