im spiraling y'all i started thinking too hard and im starting to believe that the SOLE reason the duffers had will be canonically in love with mike in s4 and not some random man is so they could use the painting storyline. that was their crux for s 4 almost. like without it they couldn't have had mike and el's big moment in the end. im betting they thought of the painting idea first and were like wait we're gonna have to make will crush on mike to make this work

i love how they made sure to emphasize that time in the upside down was frozen the day will was taken in s4 and just never elaborated on that again in s5

and if i say I think buddie isn’t happening because they had chim of all people run to eddie instead of buck
