for tips, the biggest one i can give you is: write. even if it’s just ideas, all of it counts. no one starts out knowing how to write well. writing is a skill, and like any skill, it comes with practice.

i started writing when i was 13 (in spanish, ofc), and i promise you the first fic i ever wrote is awful😭 badly written and suuuper super cringey. i’ve been writing in english on and off since 2020, but i only started taking it seriously around 2023/2024. improvement takes time, and that’s okay

if english isn’t your first language, don’t let that stop you at all. keep a dictionary app handy, look things up whenever you need to. i do it all the time. the same goes for synonyms, especially for common words like ‘said’ or ‘asked’

reading is another huge one. read fanfiction and books! it’s one of the best ways to pick up vocabulary, pacing, and style, and it can inspire you without you even realizing it. i remember obsessively analyzing the way suzanne collins wrote ‘the hunger games’ because i loved her style sooooo much. i’m a big annotator (yeah i write in my books, idc), and i used to jot down at the end of each chapter what i liked about the narration, dialogue, or structure. i learned so much doing that!!

another thing that’s helped me a lot is keeping a word list. whenever i come across a word i don’t know, or a word that’s used in a way i really like, i save it in my notes app. if i don’t know the meaning, i look it up and write that down too. it’s been one of the easiest ways to expand my vocabulary over time, and i use it a lot when i write my own fics🙂‍↕️

for the inbetween scenes, my biggest tip is to skip them lmaoooo. there are no rules when it comes to writing fanfiction. if you don’t feel like writing something, you don’t have to! period.

if you’ve read my fics, you’ve probably noticed i do this a lot. i use time skips whenever i don’t feel like lingering on a scene for too long or going into unnecessary detail. a story can work perfectly fine if you focus only on the important moments. you don’t need to force yourself to write every transition just because you feel like you ‘should’. if a scene doesn’t excite you or feels like a chore, you’re allowed to skip it cuz it’s your work!!! and only yours! and you can do whatever you want with it

something i’ve seen work well for other writers is writing all the main scenes first, and then filling in the inbetween parts later if they feel like it. i don’t personally write that way, but it might be useful for you. every writer is different

as for smut scenes… listen. i dread writing smut💀🙏🏻😭😭 half the time i feel like i’m repeating myself over and over while actively losing brain cells. i’m not even joking😭😭😭 everything starts sounding the same to me ‘this happens, then that happens, then this happens again…’ you get it

this is fr how i feel when i write smut:

when i write smut, i usually write based on my own experiences. if you don’t have much experience (or any at all, which is completely okay), talking to people who do can help. especially when it comes to describing how things feel, not just what’s happening. one thing i do think is important is not focusing only on the physical side. what makes a smut scene interesting is what’s going on in the characters’ heads. what are they feeling emotionally? are they nervous, excited, insecure, comfortable? are they thinking about the other person, or about something (or someone) else?

now… about reaching more people. tbh i don’t really know. i haven’t done anything special for my fics to reach others on this app. using specific tags helps—tagging the fandom, the characters, etc. it makes it easier for people who consume that kind of content to find your work. but beyond that, there’s no secret formula i’m aware of

i do want you to know that worrying about your story not doing well is completely fair and valid, especially when you’ve put so much time and care into it. but please believe me when i say that focusing too much on feedback will only sour your writing experience. feeling discouraged is something every writer goes through at some point. my perspective on this has changed a lot over the past few years, and i hope i can help shift yours too so you can focus more on enjoying the process and being proud of what YOU created

what i’m trying to say is: don’t focus on the numbers. on social media, because we can’t see who’s behind the screen, it’s easy to feel discouraged by ‘low’ likes. but in reality, there was someone on the other side who read your work, thought it was awesome, and chose to engage with it. even if it’s just three likes, those are three REAL people!! and who knows? you could change the life of one of those three people with your writing. you truly never know the impact your words might have. so post that fic!!!!!!

someone out there needs your writing, even if that person is you. writing is a way to learn new things about the world and about yourself. it’s a way to expand your creativity, to explore, and to understand yourself better.
