This piece has been sitting in my files for a while now so I pushed through to finally finish it. It is kinda dated now but I really wanted to complete it as I love this scene. I started shipping Malleus and Riddle after I read this Vignette (Riddle’s suitor suit vignette). They have such good chemistry and really though, I get Malleus was just there to make sure Riddle was competent enough to save Lilia and Sebek but man you didn’t have to go that far!! His words are so heartfelt and the ROSE, like my dude, you did not have to actually place it on his chest like he was awarding him a medal himself.

I feel like so many of the characters in Twst tend to speak poorly of Riddle so it was very refreshing to have Malleus (A fae prince and one of the strongest mages in the world mind you) sing his praises.

AND the thing that cemented this for me was the absolute faith Malleus has in Riddle after this encounter. Like dude has so much faith in him that Silver even comments on it, like hello??? When did this happen??? And Malleus is just like ah yeah well it’s just the truth, he’s the king of Heartslabyul 😭.

Anyways in my headcanon this is where Riddle first catches feelings for Malleus, of course he has no idea then. It isn’t until much later that he realizes how he feels.

Finally finished my Riddle and Malleus headcanons!!

So these designs are made for the end of my AU’s act 1 (Basically my version of the twst main storyline), right before the end of the school year. It also is just for me to have a clear idea if how I want to draw these guys even without the outfit changes.

Notes:

-Riddle changes his dorm uniform after he is free from his mother (in my AU he moves out of his mother’s house due to her treatment [I won’t go to in depth into it but he undoubtedly needs to get out of that house based on what we know in canon] ). After tasting freedom for the first time he decides to design his own dorm uniform instead of using the first dorm leader’s version.

-In Roseverse, Riddle is not a ‘normal’ human. During book 6 we learn a bit about his mother’s obsessiveness with making sure her child is ‘perfect’ even before Riddle was born. In this AU there are issues late in the pregnancy and Riddle has very little chance of survival. Unable to accept this she strays off the more medical focused path to magic and in her search stumbles upon a dying flower that used to be the source of legend based around its mythical power to heal. Kinda inspired by Tangled (as Riddle does have a lot of parallels with that story) the flower gives the rest of its power to give Riddle life. The only visible sign that this took place is his pale white pupils, hinting to him not quite being ‘normal’. As for his magic, he has a unique affinity with healing even outside of his mother’s rigorous teaching.

-Riddle has freckles and a white stripe in his hair that he was forced to hide as they were deemed to be ‘imperfect’ by his mother. I added the white stripe in his hair to match with the roses being painted.

-Lilia told Riddle about Malleus’s’ crest (Sebek, Silver, and Lilia all were it in this AU as a symbol of their allegiance to him). After Riddle and Mal get together Riddle surprises Malleus by wearing one as well, showing in no uncertain terms that the two have a connection.

-Dinah’s design is based on the cat from Alice and Wonderland! She’s a spicy lil girl who is very competitive. Riddle is the only one who can actually convince her to listen and calm down when she gets a little too crazy. She also spends a lot of time outside the hedgehog enclosure, following Riddle around, often on his shoulder as he moves about the dorm.

-I didn’t change Malleus’s dorm uniform too much, I just wanted to make it a lil less military like and more regal. This would just be his normal dorm uniform in this AU.

-I added more dragon-like features to Malleus as I feel like his design is a bit too tame with them. I really wanted him to look more unusual to further explain why people are so nervous around him. I also just wanted him to read more clearly as ‘dragon’. Though like in canon I imagine he does usually hide his tail so he doesn’t accidentally harm anyone.

-Mal’s dragon form has features from both his mother and grandmother. His tail is thick and powerful like Maleficent’s, but he is a bit more bulky looking like his mother. In addition he has larger wings than both of them.

-Riddle absolutely refused to let Malleus shower him in jewels and riches, but that made him sad so they compromised with a set of ‘promise’ rings of sort, each having a gem within the ring of the other’s eye colour.

I named this AU Roseverse because the spark that started the relationship (not romantic just general start of a relationship) is when Malleus places the rose on Riddle’s chest during the Phantom Bride event. 🌹
