Leif Engström (Swedish, 1992) - The Invisible Weave (2024)
Leif Engström (Swedish, 1992), The Invisible Weave, 2024. Oil on canvas, walnut frame, 81 x 118 cm.
The Lookouts
The Chant of Light: Writing Prompts
Bitter is sorrow / Ate raw and often, poison that weakens and does not kill.
Heav'n filled with silence, then did I know all / And cross'd my heart with unbearable shame.
Let the blade pass through the flesh, let my blood touch the ground, / Let my cries touch their hearts. Let mine be the last sacrifice.
Come to me, child, and I shall embrace you. / In my arms lies Eternity.
That like the leaves after a long winter, peace too might return to the land.
That peace bore a heavy price which must be paid in blood.
At last, the Light shall shine upon all of creation, / If we are only strong enough to carry it.
Hope abandoned the armies of the faithful / At the sight of their Lady in chains.
From among them voices raised / In threnody for Andraste wreathed in flame.
The heavens wept, and yet no rain could extinguish the flame / Which was now a funeral pyre.
Blessed are they who stand before / The corrupt and the wicked and do not falter.
Blessed are the peacekeepers, the champions of the just.
Blessed are the righteous, the lights in the shadow. / In their blood the Maker's will is written.
The first of the Maker's children watched across the Veil / And grew jealous of the life they could not feel, could not touch.
In blackest envy were the demons born.
And those who slept, the ancient ones, awoke, / For their dreams had been devoured / By a demon that prowled the Fade / As a wolf hunts a herd of deer.
A dog might slink back to the hand it has bitten / And be forgiven, but a slave never.
Let us not fall into the jaws of the wolf together.
No mortal foot could tread those halls, / No hand knocked upon the gate.
No small sacrifice would open the gate.
Yet none could bear that rivals might walk in the Light / Of their gods, when they did not.
Ninety-nine knives gleamed in the firelight / As the sacrifices began.
The legions of dead slaves rose / To the zenith of the black sky.
By blood and lyrium were they drawn / Inexorably to the Unreachable City, / The heart of all creation.
At a touch, the gate swung wide, / And the Light parted before them like a curtain.
Then the Maker heard the distant cries / Of the sacrificed. A chorus of voices beyond counting / Calling out for justice.
Dragons with wicked eyes and wicked hearts, / On blacken'd wings does deceit take flight, / The first of My children, lost to night.
And the Maker in sorrow turned His gaze / And no longer hoped for His children to return.
Their pride refused all measure of blame.
Magic could not undo / What evil had done.
They looked on what pride had wrought, / And despaired.
You have brought Sin to Heaven / And doom upon all the world.
With passion'd breath does the darkness creep. / It is the whisper in the night, the lie upon your sleep.
As the moth sees light and goes toward flame, / She should see fire and go towards Light.
For You are the fire at the heart of the world, / And comfort is only Yours to give.
And though I bear scars beyond counting, nothing / Can break me except Your absence.
In the pounding of my heart / I hear the glory of creation.
We are alike in sorrow, sculptor and clay, / Comforting each other in our art.
I cannot see the path. / Perhaps there is only abyss. / Trembling, I step forward, / In darkness enveloped.
Now her hand is raised / A sword to pierce the sun / With iron shield she defends the faithful / Let chaos be undone
And the stars stood still, the winds did quiet, and all animals of earth and air held their breath.
And the Maker wept for his Beloved, and turned once again from all creation.
Though I walk through the mists on the edge of the void, I shall not fear, for you are with me.
The righteous stand before the darkness and the Maker shall guide their hand.

Strange Places (9+1)
For @fenhawke-week Day 4 prompt: Strange Places
Words: 459 Pairing: Fenris x F!Hawke Rating: T Summary: Ash and Fenris have a friendship romance, but that doesn't mean they agree all of the time.
Read on A03
9 times Ash Hawke and Fenris disagreed, and one time they didn't.
1.
Fenris insists that the beer on tap at the Hanged Man is not fit for consumption. Ash meanwhile just grins and tells him that the watered-down 'rat's piss swill' is her favorite.
"I will be sticking to wine."
2.
"Says the person who hasn't cleaned the dead bodies out of the front hall in 6 years," Ash replies.
Fenris insists they're a decoy, of course.
3.
"Well at least I fold my clothes and don't throw everything on the floor," Fenris tells her.
Ash does try consciously to fold, but it still ends up messy. She concedes that Fenris does keep things tidy when he's not hate-squatting in a Magister's mansion anymore.
4.
Fenris thinks they should try and cook, now that he isn't on the run. Ash votes for take out, pastries, or chips and dip.
"Don't you remember, I almost burned down the estate when I tried cooking an omelette. I burn everything I touch."
5.
Ash insists on flirting with the demons before killing them.
Fenris doesn't mind her flirting exactly, he just thinks it's in poor taste to flirt with someone before killing them (wait until he meets Zevran).
6.
Ash thinks Wicked Grace takes great technical skill, she’s not just lucky thank you very much. Fenris is skeptical but doesn't say anything.
He's not going to die on that hill when he still owes so much coin to Varric (he's good at many things, Wicked Grace is not one of them).
7.
Fenris tells Ash that she would be better off if she went to bed a little earlier. He knows from personal experience after all, sleeping with one eye open for many years.
"But then I'd miss the sunrise, and it's so pretty," she argues.
8.
Ash forgets to clean her blades often. Blood eats into the metal and rusts. What a waste.
Fenris is fastidious when it comes to his blade. He'll complain she hasn't tended her blades but he won't do it for her.
9.
Fenris likes to take the short cut home but Ash wants to take the scenic route because, "you never know what we might find on the way".
"The answer is almost always trouble," Fenris says.
+1.
They sit on the roof of his mansion at night, the stars above them and the stretch and stench of the city below.
"What a shithole," Ash laughs. "But there's no place I would rather be."
Fenris hums in agreement. "Kirkwall is a strange place indeed. It's surprising how somewhere can be so unsettling, and feel like a home. Feeling at home...is not a feeling I am accustomed to."
"The company makes it better, huh?"
He nods and leans into her warmth. "On that we can both agree."
Martin Schongauer, Griffin, 1475-85
and, because I must, for lenore/lucanis (/neve??): And though I bear scars beyond counting, nothing / Can break me except Your absence
Yayyyy angst, thank you Mer!! I've been meaning to write Lucanis's perspective of Lenore's disappearance for a while and this quote finally clicked it into place <3
Except Your Absence
(Rook Ingellvar/Lucanis Dellamorte | 2,892 Words | CW: references to canon-typical violence)
"See! on yon drear and rigid bier low lies thy love, Lenore! Come! let the burial rite be read--the funeral song be sung!-- An anthem for the queenliest dead that ever died so young-- A dirge for her the doubly dead in that she died so young." —Edgar Allen Poe, "Lenore"
For the second time in recent memory, loss caught Lucanis by surprise.
Victory against Ghilain'nain had been so unexpected, so long pursued, that the abruptness of this other failure snagged beneath his lungs like a fishhook. The goddess was dead. Rook was gone. Both were true, but he kept turning the words over in his mind as if he could not make sense of the shape of them.
"Go, go, go—" Davrin was chanting, dragging a furious Taash behind him.
Behind them, the wrath of a god swelled, prepared to consume all of Tearstone Island. Lucanis ran—he had honed his body for so long that it obeyed him almost without his intervention—but some part of him lingered in the killing field they had left behind.
The loss of Lace, brave and strong to the last. The blue dagger sinking into the flesh of a god. The fall, ameliorated by Spite's wings. The moment he had realized Ghilan'nain was dead at last; the next moment, turning to look at Rook. The sudden loss of color in her face, the glassiness of her eyes, the faint expression of surprise as she'd fallen back into a sudden void and was gone.
